Margaret Bonds: Troubled Water - Nathan Cheung

Nathan Cheung performs Margaret Bonds' Troubled Water from the Spiritual Suite.
This piece is an incredible reimagination of the spiritual "Wade in the Water," a spiritual often associated to times of slavery and the Underground Railroad. Bonds' compositional prowess is easily reflected by her contrapuntal layering of the tune in all parts of the texture, her ability to create vastly different characters with a single tune, and her many colorful and lush harmonizations of the tune. All in all, it's a beautiful piece with a great deal of soul.
