- Marc-André Hamelin is a Canadian classical pianist whom I have admired since my early days of classical piano in elementary and middle school. This is his remarkable playing of Alexis Weissenberg's arrangement “En Avril A Paris”!

Today's sheet music trivia (first to answer correctly gets PDF): spot a 10th.
In Bar 27 you have E3 to G#4
In Bar 77 you have D to F# on the LH only
Bar 77, LH, Beat 1
Bar 8, Right Hand, E to G natural in the (presumably) Eø7/F# chord.
😊🎉😢😮😅😊❤🎉😂😂
It's incredible how he can be so fast yet remain such a high level of clarity and touch.
Practice!
You practice very slowly not neglecting any fingers everything loud and even and slow making sure you know where the notes lie and you aren’t missing them, then you can play it fast and soft with phrasing after that and with high clarity
You should watch his performance of un sospiro. Such incredible control th-cam.com/video/zSHwX2O7j2w/w-d-xo.htmlsi=9qvEU_OyNHyyfndu
Yo🥹his passion wen playing creates his piano~perfection🤗
also a high quality piano helps a lot
No matter how many times I listen to him, I’m never ready for how awesome Hamelin is
Absolutely no superfluous movement, none of this hammy over-acting crap, what a joy to watch
Hamlin is the pianist's pianist. His technique and virtuosity is so advanced that it always seems effortless. What a great performance and offering.
Much like Liberace, with a higher taste level.
Es fantástico !! , su gran talento y virtuosismo son unicos👏👏👏👏👏. Maravillosa musica❤🌹
@@ericalbany Oh dearrrrrrrrr......
@@enriquesanchez2001 and I meant that as a compliment. Liberace had a marvelous light touch and technique to spare.
@@ericalbany I understand what you're saying. He was very talented. My comment was addressed more to the fans of his day which considered him a serious musician, especially those who couldn't tell the difference and fawned over him and his showmanship blindly.
We humans are capable of beautiful, even brilliant things! This performance was impeccable and moving like nothing else. Rhythmically, expressively, and technically complex, yet so effortless. He is without question a brilliant artist!
I had the pleasure of meeting and chatting with Marc-Andre Hamlin in college after a virtuosic concert. He's incredible and humble.
I had the same pleasure. I got to ask him a couple questions about playing and learning complex polyrhythms in modern classical music. He said some joke when I asked how to be sure they are exact about no living composer has complained about his polyrhythms after he followed his advice for practicing them. 😂
A rare and delightful exception to the rule never meet your hero.
Can I buy the sheet music please ?
The craziest thing about this transcription is that Alexis Weissenberg - when recording this arrangement - went by the pseudonym "Mr. Nobody". He didn't want people to know it was him!
Thankfully Hamelin painstakingly transcribed Weissenberg's recording BY EAR and then popularized it for a new audience.
I'm happy to see this video getting so many views! This work deserves more attention - it's on Hamelin's "In a State of Jazz" album, alongside other great Jazzy works.
I never would have guessed that Alexis Weissenberg had something like this in him.
th-cam.com/video/XFGJZ8Udz_Y/w-d-xo.html@@balok63a40
And yet they say “classical musicians can’t improvise”…
Hamelin's tonal control is world class.
One of the most underrated aspects of piano playing: "expressivity". This man embodies it. Someone might be impressed by his superb technique and fluency with this instrument. But the way he conveys so much emotion with tempo, touch, volume control... This is something you cannot teach. And at the same time this is the greatest thing in music.
Yes! He is so gifted! The keyboard/ he owns it💕
You absolutely can teach expressivity. But Hamelin's expressive side is waaay too overlooked.
He’s not a very musical
@@Rach-Fanatic Depends on the repertoire he plays.
@@theoboueid6450 It can certainly be taught, to a degree. But some are just naturally gifted with it more than others.
His smile in the end was inexpressibly priceless
tell that for those who pay to see him play
@@nikofuruiti4064do you pay to see him play, or see him smile?
@@bradymiller3403 true, true kkkkkkkj my bad
Yes!
He’s playing a two part conversation with all of its expression ,taught and emotion caught in the wind. Beautiful expressionistic playing
So, his music in front of him is simplistic and he is adlibbing all this beautiful sound. I have seen some great jazz pianists in my life, but this is top hat!
Three and a half minutes of paradise.
I'm speechless, such a beautiful piece and interpretation.
It's almost as if he was painting a beautiful scene or telling a story.
I was totally captured by it.
Hamelin always nails the right kind of touch and expression.
Take a listen to his version of Gershwin's piano concerto in F !
Oh my!! The lightness and sharpness of this piece is incredible and so satisfying - and mr Hamelin presented it masterfully. Soooooo beautiful, I float listening to it...
Many years ago, maybe 30 years ago, I heard Hamelin give a recital in the Wigmore Hall, the program was all obscure virtuoso music, Godowsky and stuff like that, and it he was playing from sheets of music as it was being recorded for a CD. At one point as he was playing, the sheet in front of him fell off the piano and floated gracefully to the floor. Of course he knew the music and he just carried on as if nothing had happened.
IMHO the greatest living pianist
The technical control and cleanliness were the ultimate level of musicality for me during the fantastic performance. I felt like I was sitting in the audience, witnessing this masterpiece.
The beauty of the sound of this instrument is clouding the music. What tone! Really. Enjoying the playing and music too.
Im crying. I first heard this man when i was a young kid and wanted to hear new music was tired of Scarlatti,Mozart,Chopin Scriabin recitals. Bought WiliamBolcolms later fiundHamelins recording. Took ten years before i listened and loved it. Now the violinconcerto i cant get out of my ears or Bolcolms rags it led me on to discover contemporary music of all kinds. Please visit Miami or WestPslmBeach Mr.Hamelin!
That soft chord ending is magical.
What a talented fellow.
The official edition of this work based on the original arrangement by Weissenberg and Hamelin's transcription was published by the Japanese publisher Muse Press in 2018 as "6 arrangements of songs by Charles Trenet". There is also an edition by Shota Ezaki dated 2014 circulating online. Both are more accurate than this transcription.
I thought as much. I already have copies of the original edition. Nice effort from him still.
@@imlistening1137 I was referring to the sheet music of Hamelin's transcription who is the actual performer in the video. The sheet music in the video is another transcription by Timothy Gondola.
@@perstattin pardon me! I will remove my snarky comment! And I apologize.
Hi playing is so effortless, it leaves his mind uncluttered to truly interpret.
What a lovely and very musical performance.
One of the most beautiful things I've ever experienced... amazing piece, arrangement, and performance
Oh wow! Gifted, and very talented ,his fingers are like waves of a gentle sea, Bravo !! ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Absolutely stunning. Perfectly played! Bravo! 👏
The Weissenberg-Trenet pieces, especially when played by Hamelin, are really beautiful! I would encourage people to search in YT other pieces like this, or in streaming platforms. The lovers of expressive piano pieces will not be disappointed.
Thanks a lot for bringing this performance here! I didn't know this particular audio/video recording 👍👏
This was absolutely spellbinding, especially in the F-sharp major sections!
A Beautiful and Stunning performance, not only perfect instrumentation, but just, if not more importantly, with his personality becoming an extension of the music. This gave me goosebumps and caused my heart to soar. Thank you!!🙏🕊✝️🕊🛐🕊🙏
A priceless , invaluable artist. Brilliant , graceful and full of emotion. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
A great way to start my day
I was certainly ready. His reputation preceded him. He’s one of the all-time great pianists. This piece was child’s play for him!
I’ve been playing this for an about 2 months. Easily the single most beautiful piece of music ever known to mankind
OK… “easily”… ??!!! Calm down, now
@@PabluchoViision yes this is easily more beautiful than any of Chopins pieces
@@LisztAddict😮
@@LisztAddict There you go again with “easily”! hahaha. But at least you’ve backed down from your earlier claim of “most beautiful piece in the history of mankind” so now it’s just “more beautiful than anything of Chopin’s”. Pretty soon it’ll be “One of the most beautiful pieces composed in the 1950s.”
@@PabluchoViision Yes I will easily do that.
Learned this piece because of this performance. So magical
Hi! What is the name of the piece?
En Avril A Paris@@hesperidino5105
Oh that was so beautiful !
After having come back to the piano after many years away from it, I'm impressed with any level of playing. But this blows my mind.....technique, expression, amazing! But the memorization is beyond my comprehension!
This piece really connects to my soul
Fantastic playing and a fantastic instrument. That Model D is like a steel hammer, wrapped in a velvet glove.....soft and pretty to look at, but can blow a hole through the floor at the drop of a hat.
Refreshing, a new air for academic music. Beautiful 😍
absolutly beautifull-simple theme is allways the best
1:50 most satisfying part
Beautiful voicing *and* general touch
It's so exciting to see Hamelin in your channel! He's also my favorite pianist too
There's definitely Art Tatum influence there. Awesome.
I don't care about speed nor clarity, but his idea. Wonderful thinking
Marc-Andre is the only one who could pull that off with a straight face. Great pianist.
I had 4 years at top UK music colleges studing piano and I have no idea he he does this. I do not feel small, he is just huge and I never get tired of M-AH.
This was absolutely HEAVEN ! Fantastic!
WOW! Just stunningly beautiful!
Hamelin is such an amazing artist! Thanks for sharing bro!
This is superb! Tears in my eyes!
Beautiful arrangement and performance!
Breath taking wonderful clarity high performance etc. ❤
Thank God this man didn't waste his career trying to play standard repertoire. When you are so incredibly gifted at your instrument I consider it the duty of every performer to NOT play what everyone else is playing and instead play what others don't dare to touch because it is so difficult or because they don't think it is worth the time it takes to learn the piece.
He unearthes so many gems and then when he does go to the familiar repertoire it's equally amazing. His Haydn for example is exemplary.
Talking about waste, your comment is a fine example 😊
Absolutely beautiful!
Superb, stellar and brilliant! Bravissimo!
Fave classical pianist of our time tbh
His rendition of un sospiro is incredible
"Yes I do!" is the only respond I can give upon listening to this performance, whatever the quest is.
stunning poetry and musicality
One of the most underrated classical pianists
Who underrate him among people oriented in classical pianists? he's widely considered, without any doubts, as, technically speaking the best pianist in the world (together with Sokolov). His interpretations of Liszt Norma Variations or i.e Ravel's Gaspard are said almost Sevres' standard of interpretation
@@TheWojtanowskyHe is widely considered among the technically best, not among the best in complete actuality. I think that was his point
That is so 👍@@Ace-dv5ce
What a lovely piece. And as other posters have stated, it was played magnificently.
He makes it look easy..incredible..
This is such a Masterpiece.
I hope someone can give Marc-André Hamelin, This review.
I'm a ridiculously technical music snob.
I can't listen to most symphony orchestras, they are too sloppy.
But, wow Hamelin has very clean notes and a tight sense of rhythm, that is lacking in most modern musicians.
From someone who NEVER compliments musicians. Nice work, beautiful fingering and a lovely touch on the keys. You should be very proud of both this recording and your skills.
Glorious!
Hamelin plays everything perfectly. He’s the perfect pianist. He set the standard of how everything ought to be played.
Nobody comes close to his tight playing. He’s definitely in my top 5 for GOAT.
You need to hear Gondola play this himself. It’s another level and sound like jazz. This so does not sound like jazz it’s too classical. Timothy is hard to beat.
Really really beautiful. Thanks for this gem.
Wonderfull to hear your passionate piano~playing🤗,
Piano playing on another level!
Beautiful playing!
The best lounge pianist I have ever heard!)
Ridiculous categorization there are no lounges left anymore we’re really fine music is being played
@@prezmoment.Lighten up he's just being lightheartedly nostalgic , rather than literal
That was so pretty! Thank you!
Hamelin is one of my absolute favorite pianists, along with Martha Argerich!
Beautifull. Absolutely.
Might be helpful to have the title somewhere accessible, like... in the title? The only place I can see it appearing is in the little window a few seconds into the window
Clic on the link in the infobox bellow to reach the original video. It’s an arrangement of « Avril in Paris », a song from Charles Trenet, arranged by Weissenberg.
He must have learned to play when he was born, WONDERFUL!
Thank you
Wonderful!!
so so SO good 💕
Beautiful
great transcription!!!
Merci.
The way he plays is out of 😮this world
BRAVO! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Gorgeous
Bravo! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Wow!
Wow, that is impressive! Since I am not a musician, I may not be able to really define in words what the pianist is doing. The only thing I can come up with is "melding music 🎶 artistically. Sounds so beautiful 😍 -- thank you so much.
Brilliant, musical as hell!
fabulous
Very nice!!!
Timothy, did you see Marc-Andre April Fools video last year on Tonebase about the "3 disc set of Hanon virtuoso masterpieces?"
It was hilarious
Not even joking I would totally buy it. Some of those are surprisingly expressive and they would for sure be reference versions for learners to play them with artistry.
Wonderful
Impresive😮
Exquisite!
WOW! WOW! WOW!
I live for that intro Holy fuck
