    The flute solo by the Corporal was top notch. Professional, enthusiastic and all the time maintaining the highest Military Decorum that Marines have come to be known for.

      As an Australian, It's very interesting that such a respected drill and ceremonial military service uses Waltzing Matilda. "I march to the same song as the Marines" Is a weird though seeing we're on different sides of the world

    Got a bit of dust in both my eyes? The Marine at the top dead center usually runs the flag retreat for the Disney security detail and is one squared away dude! He is the one guy I seek out every visit shake his hand and thank him. His pride, excitement, and commitment to his current job and his Corp is above reproach. I see people stand taller and with more confidence when he is around. Truly a world class act.

      Has adopted the song as their official tune,played at all deployments , and changes of command ceremonies.

      Playing Waltzing Matilda makes Marines proud. Proud to have fought in the Pacific truly against all odds. Proud to have taken R&R in Australia and to have danced with those lovely Gals from DownUnder while the Australian men were shipped off to Europe. Now that dance part was told to me by two of my uncles. One a Marine and the other Sailer both spent all of their time in the Pacific. My Uncle Shannan married one of those lovely Gals from DownUnder, my aunt Mary. My family is made up of Marines and Sailers all stationed in the Pacific from Hawaii to Guam, Wake Okinawa, and Australia. You know why I say how important Australia was to my family. It's almost like we never left.

    Veterans are allowed to salute the colors. It's been several years now that that change to the flag code, within the US Code, was changed.
    I nearly wore my arm out saluting various color guard units at a recent early Veteran's Day parade. I cheated a little and held the salute for the entire, 100+ strong Navy Jr. ROTC unit. When they returned, they saluted me, with sabers and guidons. That was a new experience. But their instructor, a crusty old Chief, made it clear, that was for me.:) I accepted only in the name of all the other veterans. I also went to their staging area and told as many of them as I could "Good Job". Their officer/advisor is a Coastie Commander.

      +John Sachse Waltzing Matilda is the official song of the US Marines.
      "The 1st Marine Division has a particularly rich history with Australia that began in World War II. Marines of the 1st Division were recorded in action by one of Australia’s most famous official war photographers, Damien Parer as they fought the Japanese in the 1940s. Parer was dedicated to documenting the fighting of his comrades and died amidst Japanese gunfire while filming a U.S. Marine advance on the island of Peleliu on Sept. 17, 1944.The division Marines were so influenced by their Australian mates that they adopted a traditional Australian folk song ‘Waltzing Matilda’ to be their battle hymn. This song is still played as the division Marines deploy"

      Just found the answer.
      Following the Battle of Guadalcanal, the division's Marines were sent to Melbourne, Australia for rest and refit.[12] It was during this time that the division took the traditional Australian folk song "Waltzing Matilda" as its battle hymn. To this day, 1st Division Marines still ship out to this song being played.[13]

    • @srp1871
      @srp1871 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thanks Victor. Walking Matilda is also the quick march for the Australian Army 1st Battalion Royal Australian Regiment and is regarded as unofficial national anthem of Australia. They lyrics of the song were written by Australian Poet Banjo Patterson in 1895. The lyric relate to a swagman (drifter or tramp) who steals a sheep and refuses to be captured by the sheep farmer and mounted police so he jumps into a water hole and drowns. I suspect it appeals to Australia's convict heritage and our readiness to question authority figures.

    not only did the USMC 1st division adopt waltzing matilda as the offical march, they also call any camp that the division sets up camp matilda, being a australian soilder we feel a closer bond to the marines then any other units in the world especially the marines of the 1st division.

      +Josh Billedeaux Not being hateful, but this isnt "The Marine Corps Band" this is the marines first division band. They are often not as good as the "The (brach) Band" players, and often stuck around E-4. Where as "The (branch) Band" fast tracks to E-6. Still decent players though for sure. Its a highly competitive slot.

    • @wilhard45
      @wilhard45 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry, but the band included several sergeants, staff sergeants and I think I saw one master sergeant. You are correct this is not the "President's Own" but the band from a local command. In this case the 1stMarDiv based in Camp Pendleton. There are 12 fleet Marine bands and all members must audition after boot camp and then attend the same schooling. Promotion is not based on being in a fleet band or being in the very select President's Own band. Promotions are based on the needs of the service and your performance as a Marine. Just for your info, during the Vietnam war the 1st Marine Division band deployed with their division and actually went out on night ambushes in and around the Danang area.

  • @stephencannon3140
    @stephencannon3140 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    As combat trained Marines they have to qualify annually with M-16 and for Staff NCO”s and Officers sometimes Side arm. They still have to maintain physical appearance and fitness standards. Possibly even held to slightly higher standards since they are in the public eye more often. Marine Band members are a special billet that you have to audition for. The Basics of marching are taught at MCRD but these Marines take it to a whole new level. They also perfect with constant practice and public events. The Marine Bands and Honor Guards are in my
    Opinion another face of the Marine Corps that the public can see often. Makes me proud to tack on my Eagle Globe and Anchor for my flight jacket name patch!

    • @rkelsey3341

      ""To the Colors" is a bugle call which is played when no band is available, or if ceremonies requiring more than one honor occur. It is given all of the courtesies as the National Anthem. The Marines and several veterans in the crowd were correct in saluting, although it was a little difficult to pick out the bugle call in that orchestrated version. The Navy enlisted guy started to salute, but then dropped it when his buddy wasn't saluting. It would have been a little easier to follow if they had played the National Anthem while the colors were being retired.
