There is a good trap that one can lay if that happens. If Ray tries to record an interview start recording it. If he refuses to conduct an interview with the interviewee recording, record him saying that and post the clip to the comment sections of all living water videos. If he does allow it to be recorded, record it and if you think you have properly stumped him, post it in the comment section of living water videos, especially in the comment section of any video that you see containing edited version of your interview clip. As a graduate from Ray’s Ambassador’s Academy I can tell you exactly what we were taught. It’s not about getting people to think constructively. It more about pointing people to the fact that they don’t live up to the standards of the Bible. And even showing them that the street preacher himself doesn’t live up to Bible’s standards either . Like he says in the video, “If I tell a lie, what would you call me?” To help them feel comfortable calling themselves a liar. Then getting them to admit that if the Bible is correct then they are going Hell. Most Americans have a Christian background so the idea of Hell does scare them. What they do is point out that “if the Bible is true” then they admit they should goto Hell. They call that “appealing to the conscience”. Because they believe the law of God is “written on everyone’s heart”. So they believe they are just reminding them of what they already know, they can’t live up to the standards of the Bible.
Then they can swoop in with a “cure”. That cure is Jesus.

I started watching a video of MCToon having a "discussion" with a Christian about the shape of the Earth. I wasn't able to watch the whole video because the Creationist wouldn't stop talking long enough for MCToon to answer his questions and because of hearing issues when two or more people are talking at the same time, I can't follow the conversation anymore. Then I get stressed and overly tired to care enough to make the effort required to understand. Something I appreciate about your videos, Paul, for the most part only one voice is speaking at a time.
Anyway what struck me most about MCToon's conversation was how much the creationist couldn't fathom the fact that MCToon is a Christian but he accepts that evolution is real and the Earth is a globe. The creationist kept bringing up the Bible and MCToon kept reminding him that it was possible to have different interpretations of Scripture and that most of the Christians of the world do not share the interpretations of the Creationist. The YEC even accused MCToon of being a liar for saying he was a Christian and not taking the same view as him..
It was quite clear that the YEC was not at all interested in hearing what MCToon had to say. And so communication between two people was impossible. There could be no real exchange of ideas. Now I'll grant that most participants in TH-cam debates ae more interested in scoring points and winning the argument then actually trying to understand the other person's viewpoint. But isn't that what happens so often in everyday conversations where there is a difference of opinion? I believe your guest Anthony made some very good suggestions not just for would-be street epistemologists but for anyone wishing to have an honest dialogue with another person.
I hope to keep all that in mind whenever I enter a discussion. Lately, when I get into a back and forth on TH-cam commentary, if I see that the other person is only interested in scoring gotchas, or is being very dogmatic in his beliefs and dismissive of my arguments or opinions, or starts being abusive and calling me a liar or whatever, I politely state the futility of either of us trying to convince the other and decline to continue the discussion. That way I don't waste the little energy I have on a fruitless exercise and risk getting angry over it, a further depletion of precious energy.
Thanks for your always interesting content.

Even if someone is focused on "winning", on convincing someone else to their point of view, this approach is far better, far more effective. "You're all wrong and I'm all right" or "you're being silly, foolish, stupid" hardly temps anyone to the speaker's side. Therefore, I have always felt that "gotcha" interviewers are simply trying to build their egos and possibly make their followers feel superior. Even a manipulative asshole who actually wants to convince a target of a different belief would meet in the middle and begin the tug-of-war there and be less obvious in directing the conversation.

I'd say his message is more "see how bad the reasons of these atheists are for not believing, we only have to tell them about the REAL religion and they will come streaming back. If somebody does not accept the good truth, and refuses to come back it's their stubbornness and their desires to not become a better person, they just want to sin".
That way he both shames them out of asking questions and maybe finding they do not really believe all that much of what their doctrine demands them to believe and excuses all "good" atheist arguments that the usual scripts do not allow them to just wave away as "insincere and driven by the motif to not come back" instead of valid questions and justified criticism of religion.

This was so cool. I'm a theist, but I know Anthony's channel and besides yours, Paul, it is one of my favorite "skeptical" channels on TH-cam. I loved listening to the contrasts in approach between Ray Comfort's videos and Anthony's, and I agree with everything that was said. I have also gotten the sense in watching Mr. Comfort that he's out there to "gotcha" people, and even though he and I share a belief in God, I doubt he would like my views on the subject---we disagree almost as sharply on the nature of God as Ray and Atheists do---but his style of "gotcha" evangelism certainly wouldn't do anything to shake my current beliefs, or convince me that he's got the right God. In contrast, I have noticed and very much appreciate the calm, measured, *fair* approach of Street Epistemology, and as a scientist, skeptic, and logic-oriented person myself, that speaks so much more powerfully to me.
I actually love having this kind of discussion with people who are curious about my faith, because I have spend a lot of time and effort dissecting my own views and questioning my own assumptions. I think it's healthy and, honestly, the only real path to truth. I wish more people in both the Theist and the Atheist camps would do that. (I tend to find that, for all the respect I have for Atheists, they tend to fall into the trap of not questioning their assumptions/tribe nearly as much as Christians do. I think it's just human nature.)

Good to see Anthony getting his props. I remember reading about how when you argue with someone they very often leave the argument more convinced than when they started. When I'm talking with people on FB I really make a concerted effort to ask questions to make sure I'm understanding the other side. I like to think I've always tended towards that style of argument but Anthony's videos have certainly given me good instruction in how to do it better.
It's funny, I'm an out in the weeds lefty-atheist, but I often find myself arguing with people on the left... not over goals, but over technique. If you think of politics (social programs, military spending, religion, anything that can be legislated) as a game- at least in terms of games in terms of game theory- I try to tell people that just because we both have the same idea of what 'winning' the game is we may have different strategies for how to get there... for instance, even although politically I'm probably closest to a Democratic Socialist I understand that in a first past the post election system that voting for a Democratic Socialist candidate in a close race, unless they are also backed by the Democrats, is not good strategic voting- vote hard left in the Democratic primary, but vote for whoever wins the primary as long as they are farther left than who the Republicans run... I had a friend who voted for Nader. I liked Nader. In ranked choice I might have even picked him over Gore (although I did have some questions about his ability to lead). Nader was a spoiler in first passed the post. I said that before Florida. So I vote Democratic but also push for ranked choice.
When I argue with someone from the Right I try to figure out if they just have a different understanding of economics than I do or if they are just racist. If they are racist,... well, I haven't found a good set of arguments for that yet, but I've got a pretty good set of conversation points for economics, and I'm willing to be convinced on different points of view (A Krugman article changed my perspective on debt).

Most simply find it dishonest and all agree it adds nothing to the conversation. I'm not actually certain it's intended to sway anyone. He's literally preaching to the choir, showing a subset of true believers dishonest tricks that they think will let them convert atheists. Thats actually what Ray is selling (figuratively and literally): "buy my shtick and you too can bring atheists too God" If they try it in the real world, they soon discover that it converts nobody.
