  • Our examination of the "Evolution Exposed" all-star creationist six-hour epic seminar with Ray Comfort and 10 other well-known prominent anti-evolution speakers. This time, Mark Spence of Living Waters tells us about how evolutionists don't value life.
    Cynthia McDonald brings her expertise in biology and culture to assure us that Mark doesn't know what he's talking about.

    "If evolution is true then lives don't matter" is confession through projection. To religious people the important thing is the afterlife, so it naturally flows that this mortal life is what doesn't matter since it's basically a waiting room you sit in for 80 years or so before the REAL story begins. When someone makes that "if no god life is meaningless" it makes me think of them as nihilistic misanthropes.

    • @armedweiss5531
      @armedweiss5531 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Exactly. The universe has no inherent meaning or value, and that's the beauty of it. Since nothing has any value imposed on it by some "supreme" or "absolute" being, we're able to create our own value and give life meaning based on our own values.

    • @bariumselenided5152
      @bariumselenided5152 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, I was thinking about how it’s impossible for anything to have “inherent value” , cuz value needs at least a “valuer” and a “valuee”. A valuee on its own would have nothing to value it, and so would have no value.
      Put another way, value isn’t a trait that a thing can have, it’s a process that two things undergo. I can’t have intrinsic value anymore than I can have intrinsic walking. It just doesn’t make any sense.

    • @franciscodetonne4797
      @franciscodetonne4797 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Agree.
      I'm more of an agnostic cosmic existentialist (the Universe doesn't care about anything, my life has no inherent purpose/meaning/value and I have to be the one who finds a purpose for my own life), and I think it's far more powerful for the individuals to find their own purpose in life than having purpose givens to them before they are born.
      Very hardcore Christians tend to use arguments and reasons that would increase their own ego or self-centeredness, like "God cares about us" and "We were created in the image of God". There is little humility in that but full of arrogance (pride is a deadly sin, I hope they remember that), and IMO, little power for them, because they believe their purpose is given from an outside entity, not self-made.

      As for the term Evolutionist, as much as you, me and Paul would love to see a decrease in usage, it is a natural extension of the English language. Yes, the issue is that it makes it seem like there's a valid debate between creationists and evolutionists in science. Take the Flat-Earth cult for example, and their vigorous use of the term "Globist" in reference to people who "believe" that the earth is a spinning globe. A globist might be a word, fine, but it's not natural and wholly redundant to refer to someone as a widely known, uncontroversial fact. Real cute of that guy to talk about """evolutionists""" only seeing instrumental value when the only value christianity sees in people is that which gets more asses in pews. Try telling a hardcore fundie christian that they should value someone who's a different religion or rejects religion entirely, or even is part of their specific christian sect but "refuses" to stop "sinning" (ie. accepts a part of their identity the church doesn't like rather than bottling it up), see how they react.

    10:38 - OK at first I thought he was trying to argue that "black lives matter" only makes sense in a Christian world view because he was trying to leverage the anger and grief of people of color to convince them that they should be Christian... (Though others have commented that he sounds as though he imagines himself speaking to just a white audience, and he did pivot to "all lives matter" - so I could see how maybe he's rooted in a different philosophy and just using BLM as an example because of the attention it gets)
    ...But then he lays it out pretty directly at 10:38 - despite the fact that he's all talkin' George Floyd this, George Floyd that, and saying that only Christian values would place intrinsic value on his life in the first place and implying that anyone else only cares about his death because of its "instrumental value" (i.e. as a means to accomplishing political change)... He denies that there's a problem, flatly stating that the concerns of BLM are not legit and that they're just out to stage a revolution... To me, it seems he's refusing to consider that Floyd's death is representative of any kind of more widespread problem, thus cutting off any possibility of fixing such a problem, which effectively goes right against the whole idea that he values Floyd's life in the first place...
    If he's really imagining a white audience friendly to his own point of view, this isn't a problem for him - if his audience is hostile toward BLM then his attempt to frame them as an inherently groundless and cynically motivated ideology would play well to them. But from my perspective it's like he just dropped any pretense of caring about these issues... Which maybe wouldn't have been so stunning to me if I'd been more tuned in to the nuance of what he was saying from the start...

      (Long ass irrelevant tangent, wouldn’t read past this if I were you)
      Plus to be honest, I think rappers more often think of the “made it from the bottom now we here” thing than conservatives do. When conservatives acknowledge that someone bootstrapped up, they only use it to justify their policies. When rappers acknowledge someone for gettin it out the mud, they’re actually congratulating the person for their accomplishment. Cuz like if you think about it, to revel at someone climbing social status against all odds, you have to acknowledge that there is a social ladder, that it is bad to be lower on it, and that it is incredibly difficult to climb. That fits in just fine with the view of the world that oppressed people have, but it goes against what most conservatives like to think. I mean, it’s in the name, they wanna conserve the world we have. They wanna think that it’s all fine and anyone can live a good life no matter what, and if their life sucks it’s cuz they’re lazy. So they can’t really congratulate someone for beating the odds without shooting their own argument in the foot. Instead, they use actual rare examples and treat them as anecdotal evidence and claim that it’s what normally happens whenever you apply yourself properly, thereby insulting anyone who isn’t doing good in life and saying they deserve to be there and chose to be there. In that way, it kinda parallels Christianity a little.
