Making Plastic Reeds

  • Audio is a recording that I made using the reed made in the video. Making synthetic reeds from plastic Slurpee cups. I have tried different plastics from bottles etc. but the Slurpee cup was thick enough and very soft so it vibrates well.
    One thing that I didn't mention in the video was that the placement of the 5th wire (on the blade) affects the reed like a spine on the cane reeds. Placing the wire closer to the tip is good for high notes, but plays sharp; further from the tip is lower in pitch and easy response. No wire on the blade at all is a good Zarathustra reed!

    If anyone here makes plastic bassoon reeds, even if they're made from Slurpee cups, I'll buy one to give it a try. $160 for a Légère is steep.

      Anyway, with plastic you have advantage of been immune to moisture and temperature, if that really affects you.

    I️ just tried this, it took a lot of trial and error but it doesn’t sound bad at all. I️ substituted the slurpee cup for a standard milk jug and it worked fine. I️ think the plastic from milk jugs are a little stiffer so it’s a bit harder to get vibration, but it still produces sound.

    I created a double reed for my tenor sax this way in high school. I took it very seriously. But it was unplayable in the higher ranges

    I have found the predudice against plastic reeds to be unfounded. They are particularly good for beginners as they are more durable.

    Very cool. Plastic reeds are really taking off in recent years, and now we know we don't have to pay any more than a few dollars (so long we have tools).

    And I'll give it a go myself. I suspect attaching similarly constructed reeds to the staple that fit in the zournas would work well. What a GREAT video -- thank you so much for sharing. Do reach out when you get a chance!

    can this technique be applied to make duduk reeds? on a basic level, they are somehow geometrically similar.

    • @rbrooks2007
      @rbrooks2007 ปีที่แล้ว

      There was a guy who made a duduk from copper pipe and reed from simply squashing a section of plastic tubing flat and shaping it. There is a video in here. Just search on Linsey Pollak "DIY Copper Duduk + polypipe duduk reed"

    Any other reed besides an oboe reed confuses me so much. So for this reed do you just use it to blow air through? Does it work the same as an oboe reed?

    • @jaxw2628
      @jaxw2628 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      薄ばか yeah, it works just like an oboe reed, blowing air through the reed itself will make noise.

    Sounds like a Contra Bassoon, I knew Fred Dutton who played contra in the LA Philharmonic... so, is the soundtrack made with bassoon or contra?

    • @hunteralexander9791
      @hunteralexander9791 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was played on a newer instrument called the Kontraforte. It plays in the same range as contrabassoon but has a modernized design and has characteristics that are somewhat unique to itself.

      Hunter Alexander Hey, thank you very much for that response and clarification. I know the contrabassoon player in the north state symphony here in California and I will ask her if she has heard of that instrument.
