The eclipse gundam is a great kit! Hobby lobby has it priced at $48 which is less than MSRP at around $60 and with the 40% off on top of that its a steal! The extra parts come from the model kit that it is based off of. The freedom 2.0. Bandai likes to reuse some runners from other kits when they can to save on new molds, even if it's for just a few parts. They serve no purpose. The first page of the manual will show the runners with x's on the unused parts.
Awesome pickup for the price. I also wasn't into Gundam as a kid but as an adult I'm recently watching a few Gundam series and I recommend watching any U.C. timelines series if you like modern Military/Political Warfare drama transitioning to vibes of Star Wars (Amuro Ray: Luke Skywalker vs Char Aznable: Darth Vader). Currently watching Gundam: The Origin movie series which is the Prequel to the 1st series but with better animation and character/world building.
There are tons of other designs out there that are more blocky without spiky parts. Especially the ones from the Universal Century timeline. The Eclipse is actually pretty unique and the most sharp spiky out there so he barely even looks like a gundam suit. There are several series and they all have different designs behind them so there's definitely something you'd might like.
