19:04 - Sociopathy doesn't have anything to do with morality. That's more a pop psychology definition and an oversimplification of the disorder. It's Antisocial Personality Disorder in addition to other psychological traits, but the overarching trait is that someone who is sociopathic does not empathize with others and is unable to emotionally identify with others. As a result, sociopathic people sometimes harm others or take advantage of them because they are unable to place themselves in the shoes of others and struggle to empathize with how their behavior affects others. Not all sociopaths go out of their way to hurt people, though. Many have learned to live among us functioning as productive members of society.
The concept of sociopaths being "immoral" and not knowing "right from wrong" and such is a Hollywood and TV show trope.
Just wanted to get that straight, in defense of people with ASPD.

    • @ZoniaTV
      @ZoniaTV 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@Dark Waters They are still neuro atypical disorders. They can be influenced or reinforced by upbringing and environment, but they are not *created* by such. We're still learning a lot about *why* the brain develops this way for some people. Part of the problem in why most people don't understand it is there is a ton of sensationalized fiction and pop psychology around these terms that we are constantly inundated with. The truth is that the mental health community doesn't know the cause of ASPD/Sociopathy. They know it has to do with brain development and that upbringing and environment influence the development of the brain, but they also know that most people do not develop ASPD despite sometimes having similar upbringing and environment as many who do develop it and vice versa. They also know that it tends to run in families along genetic lineage.
Psychopathy is under the same classification: ASPD. A "psychopath" is a person with ASPD who also has other traits (like addictive behavior in combination with persistent antisocial behavior and narcissism, for example) that cause the person to act out against people in manners that are considered heinous by societal standards. The term itself along with the term "sociopathy" have been seeing less frequent use in the modern mental health vocabulary because it is far too imprecise a thing, it has been used to describe many different unrelated conditions over the years and it carries a culturally loaded label along with it that is unhelpful. A psychopath still has ASPD. Modern mental health practice has found it more beneficial to be more specific and less general and to not use the loaded words that are popular in media and fiction. Instead, you would say Antisocial Personality Disorder demonstrating persistent antisocial behavior, narcissism and addictive behavior (or something like that; it's a case-by-case thing).
If you want to read up on the whole topic:
      www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/antisocial-personality-disorder/symptoms-causes/syc-20353928
Wikipedia also has a good article on it with a section covering the mental health industry's more recent abandonment of the term "psychopath."

@Dark Waters I basically said the opposite, that there appears to be a developmental difference between those with ASPD (and this includes psychopaths, as they have ASPD) versus those without it. There is a catch, though. Saying that the brain is different or not different is a misnomer. Everyone's brain is different and develops pathing in slightly different ways resulting in vastly different personality outcomes from person to person. The mechanisms are roughly the same from person to person, but the end result in development always ends up different. There are some common traits and some uncommon. To a subset of people, cilantro tastes soapy and unpleasant. Some people "hear" colors or, for others, sounds will create colors in their minds. Some people don't develop the ability to relate to others on an emotional level or are unable to consider the world from the perspectives of others. So, saying that a psychopath's brain is different from others is not wrong but it is also not telling the whole story and, since everyone's brain is different, to lean on this oversimplification is to completely ignore what is actually happening.
If you go back and look at what I wrote, though, you'll see where I talk about how we have evidence that it often runs along genetic lineage. And for those who argue that it is environmental or upbringing, we have many who have ASPD who were raised in very healthy households. We also have people who do not have ASPD who were raised in extremely violent and depraved households. But we also have evidence that upbringing and environment can exacerbate antisocial behavior and can play a critical role in the difference between someone with ASPD and someone with ASPD who maliciously preys on others (e.g. "psychopath"). Someone with ASPD alone isn't necessarily preying on others, but if they're raised in a household that didn't put much emphasis on respecting people and if the environment was abusive or if they were raised to believe that they are superior to others, then they may end up preying on others or even worse ... treating them like sport. Combine that with addiction and then you have your stereotype "psychopath."
As for Narcissistic Personality Disorder, it is one of many personality disorders and is treated as its own and separate diagnosis. Someone with ASPD may or may not also have NPD. In the "Psychopathy Checklist" it is listed as one of many (and among the most common) traits of "psychopathy" but again the psychopathy name and much of what we previously associated with it is largely being dismissed in modern mental health research and diagnosis. NPD is still a thing and diagnosable, but anyone can potentially have NPD and still not have ASPD or any antisocial personality disorders. It is its own thing. However, when one with ASPD *also* has NPD (called a "comorbidity"), this tends to manifest in more antisocial behavior than one with ASPD who *doesn't* have NPD.
It's a heck of a lot to go into in the comments section. Also, this way outside my area of focus. I was just trying to clear a few things up and hopefully contribute to the disuse of outdated and loaded terms like "psychopath" and "sociopath", dispel some of the popular myths around the subject and stick up for those with ASPD.

The GOP and the Trumpists who stormed the Capitol Building are much more blasphemous than this song. These people have put Trump up as their messiah, yet still invoke god. They’re not only blasphemous, but they also have a cognitive dissonance.

Musically this song is great, and Onslaught has been around a LONG time, this was after they sort of came back after being on what I think most assumed was a permanent hiatus. I want to say they were originally a hardcore punk band, I'm not sure when they shifted to thrash but you can still hear the punk influence in their vocal style. But lyrically I did think it was a bit...on the nose? I won't say it's trying too hard but I think lyrically its not strong enough to lift itself above some of shock value statements like say Behemoth is able to do. Vin's face during the song did make me laugh though,
Also, this is a common misconception but sociopathy doesn't have any tie to morality. Not really. Sociopaths lack empathy and find it impossible or very difficult to form any emotional attachment to people. Some sociopaths do,. but its usually like...one person and even then its.....different than how you or I might form an emotional attachment.
I'm completely with Sori on how she feels about child rapists and people who protect them. Unfortunately for Sori (as Vin points out) its against her own religion to feel that way. Luckily I have no such qualms.
In regards to blasphemy, it seemed clear from the song that the band (or writer anyways) is an atheist. If that's true I don't think Jesus would be nearly as offended with his blasphemy as the blasphemy of a christian who molests children or countless other terrible things. So I'm not overly concerned for the guy . Though I will say that Jesus, whatever he may be, not that bad of a guy! Seemed like a nice fellow, you won't see me throwing any dirt on him.
Here's the thing about militant atheism that Vin just refuses to acknowledge. One guy blaming or in his case assigning value to his (non) religious beliefs doesn't cast aspersion onto atheism as a whole. And to be fair historically many rulers have shifted responsibility for their actions to christianity. But I think its a different matter entirely when you have a religious state engaging in a HOLY WAR. that is where religion starts to pick up more of the blame for me. The other thing is that atheism is not really a religion, it's an absence of religion. So the blame for "militant atheism" falls on the individual, how can it be anything else. If I go out and commit genocide and blame it on being a Deist it doesn't mean Deism is bad, because it means something different to everyone, that's the very defining characteristic of it. Maybe if I was say a Pastafarean and blamed the genocide on the Flying Spaghetti Monster, a discussion could be had.

The sociopath discussion actually has a lot to unpack about societal norms and whether or not an action can be considered right or wrong conditionally. Revolutionaries are always viewed as being in the wrong until they succeed, for example. A lot of early medicine? Best available information, so there wasn't a way to know it was wrong to do things that way. The idea that there is a best possible behavior assumes we're working with perfect information and as far as I can tell that simply has never been true for anything at any point in history. On that ground I reject the idea of absolute morality but instead believe morality is somewhat liquid and based entirely on what is known (not necessarily by the individual). You can't make judgments based on what exists but nobody knows to exist - that is silly. Which then brings us to Christians claiming to have the moral high ground either need to prove God exists, or shut the fuck up.
