The album Black Metal from Venom gave the genre its name. It's impossible to talk about black metal without talking about Sarcofago (a Brazilian band). Even Darkthrone, a band which is a part of the so called "Second Wave of Black Metal" (or simply "Norwegian Black Metal"), say that Sarcofago was to them one of their main influences. Euronymous and Wagner Lamounier (former Sarcofago's vocalist, who now is a professor) used to send letters to each other. If I could suggest a song in particular, you should listen to "Satanic Lust" (from the album "I.N.R.I." (1987)). This particular song is quoted by Fenriz (from Darkthrone) as one of their main influences. Great work! :)
The álbum Black Metal was the one that gave life to today's Black Metal bands Like Venom with their Black Metal álbum Bands Like Bathory, Venom, Celtic Frost And HellHammer brought Black Metal to life
If you want to hear where the stereotypical Black Metal sounds came from, you should listen to any song of either 'Under the Sign of the Black Mark' or 'Blood Fire Death' by Bathory. It's the sound the majority of the second wave based their sound on, and ironically became known as the Norwegian sound, even though Bathory was a Swedish act. The main difference between Venom and the second wave bands is that Venom was a shock band for entertainment value, while the second wave were serious in their attempts to scare, shock and terrorize the mainstream. They took the sound seriously, the lyrical content, the corpsepaint image, all to differentiate themselves from the relatively safe sound and image of the rest of the Metal genre. Venom never took it seriously.
@@datolapauri2918 I never claimed to debunk Venom. Only a fool would deny their considerable influence on the Black Metal scene at large. I'm just saying that both musically and ideologically Venom are very much unlike what came to be considered "true" Black Metal in the late 80's/early 90's. Musically speaking their influence became much more direct in what is now called "Black 'n Roll", something that started much later than the 2nd Wave of Black Metal. It's the same with Mercyful Fate. No one will argue that their music is far from Black Metal from a technical standpoint. But they are also considered to be a big influence on the Black Metal scene, but for lyrical content and aesthetics. But from a purely musical standpoint, Bathory is the one with the strongest influence on what came to be known as "the Norwegian sound".
My first taste of dark metal was in 1984 (14 years old) when I skipped religion class to run across town to borrow Mercyful Fate's Don't Break the Oath and Venom's Welcome to Hell (1981). Like you're finding now, they were foundational. Next came Hellhammer and Celtic Frost. Check out Hellhammer's Triumph of Death. They added doom to a Venom inspiration. Lastly, the invention of the automobile is credited to Karl Benz of Mercedes Benz in the 1880's. There were some others but the Benz is what others built upon. Henry Ford was the first auto maker to fully embrace the assembly line after witnessing the processes at a slaughter house were one worker did the same cut over and over.
I honestly thought you wouldn't like it that much, but I glad you did. Vin pretty much nailed the importance of this band. Notice tho, that it's before Metallica, so it's roots of all the extreme metal music too. Next in your black metal journey would be Hellhammer and early Bathory (apparently the one song you reacted to was from their later Viking Metal period)
Vin sir, you hit exactly in the point. They said we are here, we looks ugly, we are not the best in instrumentation but we do what we like and everybody like it. Fuck the haters
I saw venom in I think in 1982.....London ....The Double Anchor......Hamersmith! About 50 people..........I was 14! I had no idea they would become the grandfathers of some modern metal genres, and had no idea I would become one of their very first fans!!
Allegaeon: Proponent for sentience III the Extermination or Grey matter mechanics. Doesn't matter what you choose. It's all amazing. Edit: Venom are pioneers but saw them once playing games at a festival and they stood there without inspiration. It was a pity because I had high expectations. That was my first impression of the band unfortunately.
Definitely a black metal anthem, yes it's straight forward and simple, other Venom songs you should react to are Buried Alive, Welcome To Hell, 1000 Days In Sodom, Rip Ride, Women, Leather And Hell, At War With Satan (Title Track), Die Hard, just to name a few. 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🎶🎤🎸
Manowar did plenty of songs about their mastery of metal. "Blow Your Speakers" was the first song I heard from them. Judas Priest, Kiss, Twisted Sister, Motorhead and Metallica ("Metal Militia") have all written those 'self-aware' (meta-l?) types of things too.
Yeah. There were only so many themes and premises that metal generally covered. After society's ills, violence and mayem, war and killing, women and cars/bikes, there was always the obligatory "how we rock/making the badass music" song. Nobody did it like Manowar though. Other bands play; Manowar kills!
I'm tempted to add Manowar in there as another huge influence on black metal: I wouldn't call them a "proto-black metal" band, but they recorded more than one proto-black metal song, and it's hard to unhear the Manowar influence over the viking-obsessed Bathory and Norwegian black metal bands once you hear it. Black metal was one of the oldest metal subgenres (even if it took a few years for Venom to give it a name), and that self-aware aspect was always part of it. Maybe it's a reaction to the prog-rock, space-rock, shock-rock, and heavy-pschedelic schools of lyric-writing that influenced other forms of metal? (It's kind of hard to imagine the likes of Alice Cooper, Iron Butterfly, Jimi Hendrix, or Black sabbath singing about how much weirder and more psychedelic and sci-fi they are than anyone else....) Early metal was kind of a strange animal: you had aspects of it coming in from the decidedly middle-class prog and hippie backgrounds from one side, and the decidedly working-class aspects borrowed from shock rock, arena rock, and proto-punk from the other side. You could see a bit of that schizophrenic combination in Manowar's ability to sing completely in-character a sword-and-sorcery-themed epic in one song, then a belt out a thoroughly self-aware foot-stomper about being a true metal fan and rocking hard and playing loud and not putting up with posers and fools in the next.... I think that concrete, realistic, self-aware (working-class?) element fell out of fashion for metal alongside thrash: black metal carried it over for a while before purging it all in favor of prog, avant-garde, and symphonic metal, but I don't think I can think of anything after the "tr00 kvlt" '90s Norwegian second wave that would compare....
I mean if you guys want a full Mayhem experience try "Mayhem de mysteriis dom sathanas (live)" from their live album. "Mayhem de mysteriis dom sathanas alive" That's what they're all about. Very important song for black metal. ;)
Good stuff! Venom, Hellhammer, Celtic Frost and Mercyful Fate were huge influences on black, thrash and death metal! Check out Messiah by hellhammer and Into The Crypts Of Rays by Celtic Frost.
Wow did not expect this....you've simply got to check out Venom's other songs .Welcome to hell .Live like an angle die like a devil .In league with Satan Edit: Judging by the replies maybe add "Teachers pet" to that list & maybe one of my personal favourites "Schizoid"
Venom, nice, makes sense you'd do this song, since it gave Black Metal it's name, I was just thinking about it recently when Vin said he wanted to go to the "roots" of Black Metal. Although if i'm being honest, I'd rather see you react to Venom - Countess Bathory... or some Celtic Frost, hehe. Anyway, time to play the video. EDIT: Finished it, i didn't expect Sori to react so well to it. She reacted as I did when I first heard it. I didn't care for Black Metal like Mayhem, and I expected Black Metal like Mayhem.. and then I got this. It's just fun, man. I was saying "i'd rather see Countess Bathory", which is also from that album, and is also.. just fun, that album is fun. And then I heard Celtic Frost's "To Mega Therion", also expecting some fucked up shit.. and what I got was some good fun well played Thrash Metal. Safe to say I like these "origins of black metal" more than the first albums from the norwegian wave with mayhem, darkthrone etc. In the off-chance you read this, You could check out Venom - Countess Bathory, the Hammersmith live version (since you love live version), from 1985 I believe... It's a short song like this, and gives you a visual of what they were like.
Hi Vin & Sori, I would like to congratulate the channel, but must of all for being really good persons as a holistic view. I'm an Atheist, an watching your channel makes me think there's hope no matter what religion you practice or which ideology you have. You being so open to everything and the most important part of all is that your open to conversation or debate. I would like too if you can do a reaction on deafheaven, any song you want. My best regards to you.
Also, if you're into the culture thing, compare Saxon's "Denim and Leather", it's about how the NWoBHM started out. And of course Exodus' "Bonded by Blood" and Thrust's "Posers will die" are some of those metalhead bonding songs.
Yeah, this song is perhaps an exception rather than the rule for them ; others would include Cry Wolf, Countess Bathory, Bloodlust, Schizo, Angel Dust, Powerdrive, Stand Up And Be Counted, and the insanely hilarious Aaarrrggghhh, and more. Normally, most of Venom's songs are all Satan, all evil, all darkness. Some lyrics can even be a bit disturbing, such as in Possessed, Sacrifice, Leave Me In Hell, In League With Satan, In Nomine Satanas, and more. They also have an array of sexually-charged songs with a humorous edge with Voyeur, Poisoned, Red Light Fever, Muscle, Women, Teacher's Pet, Lady Lust. Their big epic song is a 20+ minute conceptual piece called At War With Satan, from the 1983 album of the same name (Venom was already doing what Dream Theater is now famous for - songs that take up half a CD or a whole side of a cassette or vinyl LP). Its prelude/intro is featured closing out the previous album (1982's Black Metal), tacked onto the last track (Don't Burn The Witch). The prelude and the full song have been mixed together as one complete piece, getting bumped up to almost 25 minutes, and has been featured on compilations that followed over the years. Given how well Black Metal was received here, I think you guys may like it - just try to include the prelude as well. for the complete experience.
as for the sound, i think it was that era of late 70s and early 80s, when a lot of rock/metal had the same tone and distortion effect, which sounded more like Overdrive. The bass in the 70s was also raw sounding with mid and highs and less lows, until the 80s gave a lot of low end to overall music, including the kick drum.
yeah, I've seen that, the little I know from KISS has the same kind of lyrics though. just rocking out. a bunch of young bands in all genres did those kind of lyrics for a couple of songs.
You definitely should do a video on Celtic Frost. Circle of the Tyrants or maybe Into the Crypt of Rays. That is totally one of the major first wave of Black Metal bands.
Celtic Frost and probably Helhammer are the last two I would say that form the foundation of what Black metal would come to be. I think less people know about Helhammer but they are no less important because Helhammer BECAME Celtic Frost. So I think Helhammer is the next place to start, and then Celtic Frost. Worth noting that Mayhem's drummer called himself helhammer as a homage to this hugely influential band. For Celtic Frost I would recommend The Usurper (interestingly the album this is from is To Mega Therion which inspired both the band Therion and their song To Mega Therion). For Helhammer its tougher to pick a song. But I would probably say the song Eurynomos simply because of its ties to Mayhem (Euronymous was the guitar player killed by Varg)
*ManOwaR* - Metal Daze, Army Of The Immortals, All Men Play On Ten, Blow Your Speakers, Kings Of Metal, Metal Warriors... just a few ManOwaR tracks about the metal music as a culture.
Good, great, fantastic, you know the roots of black metal now. Yay. Now do some gotdamn SepticFlesh, my dudes. Portrait Of A Headless Man, 3rd Testament, Vampire From Nazareth, Order Of Dracul, it don't even matter lmao. Just anything at this point.
Also, I think the production here is bad, because it's an underground metal band from the early 80s lol. They didn't really have state of the art recording studios at their disposal. At least, I don't think.
Imagine if you will, that you were back in time when this came out-there was nothing else like it, the new wave of metal had began, and this band stepped outside of the " norm"
Okay a bit of History of Venom here, In 1990 the original bassist/vocalist Cronos was out of the band, the remaining original members found a new bassist/vocalist Tony Dolan aka The Demolition Man from another UK thrash band Atomkraft and recorded a new album called Prime Evil whic was awesome and you need to check it out. Then Cronos returned and found new members and expelled the original members Mantas (Guitar) and Abbadon (Drums). The original members recently got back together in 2014 with Tony Dolan to form Venom Inc. and record a new original album called Ave' released in 2017, The two singles off the album were "Dein Fleisch" and "Ave Satanas" which you two need to react to also asap. Venom with Cronos and two new players continued recording albums with constant member changes. And both bands stories continue on.......

I’m 50 and was into the scene at that time , there wasn’t all of these names for metal genres just rock / hard rock / acid rock , which is what the media and most people not into rock music called all heavy music / heavy metal , thrash metal , a term used by Kerrang magazine to describe the band Anthrax , it was called speed metal before that , death metal , called that because of the band Death , they were trying to sound like a corpse if one could sing , and black metal was called satanic metal for the most part but the record labels and music stores didn’t want to have the word satanic as a label in there stores so black metal came about , bands like Bathory and Emperor and Celtic Frost took Slayer’s speed Megadeth’s unorthodox song structures and mixed it with Mercyful fates style image and corpse paint and that’s more or less it
Vin is finally getting it. I find you often disappointed when music is lacking great solos or deep meanings. A lot of early thrash was just for releasing frustration and angst. You are right about the culture and Sori is dead on the “car” comparison. I actually clapped and cheered. Take it for what it is. Compare it only to what was prominent in 1981 or its contemporaries, not to the modern. Proud of you two, you need to get out more often, lol.
Band Yob doesn't sound like anything else you reacted to before. It's just pleasure to ears and soul (if you have one). This trio stands out of others in stoner/doom genre with inspirations in black metal and psychodelic rock and it also has eastern music type vibe. I receomend their song called In our Blood but any other is just as good to begin with.
If you’re looking to black metal origins, you should look at bands like Celtic Frost ( formally known as Helhammer). I would recommend the Album “To Mega Therion”, one of the most influential death metal/black metal albums ever made. Look at the album cover. You will see why I suggested it. If you want to hear an old individual black metal inspired song, I would suggest playing “Bridge of Death” by Manowar. That song always gives me chills.
Venom, in my opinion, were a thrash band that brought the initial ideas of darker themes; eventually evolving into black metal. I am open to any other ideas however! So please let me know
Something worth noting, the version of Freezing Moon by Mayhem that you guys checked out, is a poor recording for a few reasons, most importantly cause it was a demo recording, and not an album release. And the production values of it was low due to lack of funds as much as wanting a certain sound. You would have been much better off checking the version of Freezing Moon that was on actual album release of De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas. But since people have such and over-enthused love for Dead, who departed this world and the band long before De Mysteriis could see fruition. That version was more requested, despite being somewhat inferior, and the worse option to check out as a newcomer to the band. If you ever were to give Mayhem a new try, I would suggest going with Life Eternal (perhaps even the live-version from when they performed the album De Mysteriis... in it's entirety, which is something they several times a couple years ago,) or De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas from that album. Or something newer like the songs Chimera, Symbols of Bloodswords, My Death, In the Lies Where upon You Lay, or A View from Nihil I & II. Which all will present you with something quite different from what little you've sampled from the band with Freezing Moon.
olavrell I’d also recommend the song Watchers by Mayhem. Even though it’s a lot newer, I think it’s a good and fun introduction to Mayhem that’s heavy as hell!
I just haven't listened to their last album, and Ordo Ad Chao, never struck me, hence why I omitted any songs from either album. Despite De Mysteriis... being my favourite album by Mayhem, I honestly think I want the song Chimera to be the one they check out.
olavrell although I prefer Watchers over Chimera due in part to the the freaky music video, both are great songs that show a different side of Mayhem. So, I don’t care which song they watch. Both are awesome!
Cool, now listen to something from the album "Under the Sign of the Black Mark" by Bathory and you pretty much will cover all roots of black metal. Check out: "Enter the Eternal Fire", "Call from the Grave" or "Woman of Dark Desires". Some other suggestions of influential bands for black metal. Triumph of Death - Hellhammer Circle of the Tyrants - Celtic Frost Raise the Dead - Bathory A Fine Day to Die - Bathory
The only Mayhem video you watched was not the album recording but some awful demo version of "The freezing moon". You should really check out the live show of their all-time classic "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" in Brutal assault festival. This might change your opinion. /watch?v=uNPJwyxPaIc
Live from Leipzig sounds super raw, and that's totally fine. But for me Attila creates a unique atmosphere which no other Mayhem vocalists have done, and that adds a mysterious vibe.
This will piss a lot of people off, but this is not groundbreaking at all. Venom was part of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) known for this type of raw production, aggressive hard rock sound with punk influences, "evil" lyrics and imagery. There are many dozens of NWOBHM bands who were all playing this style in the late 70's and early 80's. Venom was one of the more successful and remembered NWOBHM bands but they are by no means the originators of this style.

Amazing reaction and review Vin and Sori. One of the forefathers of Black Metal indeed and the most historic song for the genre at its early inception. Now that you have reacted to Venom and Mercyful Fate, you need to react to the third part of that unholy trinity: CELTIC FROST!! Please react to "Into Crypts of Rays" or "Nocturnal Fear". Love you both and hope you enjoy your show.
The real first Black metal album is Bathory debut from 1984 and his two follow-up albums called The Return of the Darkness and Evil and Under the Sign of the Black Mark.
All the music we know today as Black Metal is based on the album 'Under the sign of the Black Mark'. Most Black Metal bands still copy the style invented by Quorton.
So? Maybe all black metal YOU know sounds like Bathorys 3:rd album, but that but that don´t make Venom less black metal. The first Bathory album sounds like Venom
@@goatpunk EXACTLY! We love Bathory but there is no dispute that Venom created Black Metal. You hear the influence in Bathory's first album. They took the sound seriously, the lyrical content, the corpsepaint image, all to differentiate themselves from the relatively safe sound and image of the rest of the Metal genre. Venom never took it seriously.
Euronymous worshiped Venom though.

Genre has venoms albums name so good luck debunking venom
@@thenecrosanct4906 ill agree with that.
Totally hear the Metallica influence in this song. Agree 1000%
Venom were a very visual band. You should check out the video for Bloodlust so you can see them just go nuts.
Venom was founded in 1979, if i'm correct.
Yup
Vin sir, you hit exactly in the point. They said we are here, we looks ugly, we are not the best in instrumentation but we do what we like and everybody like it. Fuck the haters
I saw venom in I think in 1982.....London ....The Double Anchor......Hamersmith!
About 50 people..........I was 14!
I had no idea they would become the grandfathers of some modern metal genres, and had no idea I would become one of their very first fans!!
You guys nailed this!!
Badass! This is VENOM. You won't get more badass than this.
The mighty VENOM!!!!!
iron maiden-infinite dreams or dance of death, is pure magic
Dance of Death oeh one of my favourite songs by them!

Finally someone else said BURIED ALIVE 🤘
(It's kind of hard to imagine the likes of Alice Cooper, Iron Butterfly, Jimi Hendrix, or Black sabbath singing about how much weirder and more psychedelic and sci-fi they are than anyone else....)
Early metal was kind of a strange animal: you had aspects of it coming in from the decidedly middle-class prog and hippie backgrounds from one side, and the decidedly working-class aspects borrowed from shock rock, arena rock, and proto-punk from the other side.

Very important song for black metal. ;)

The Seven Gates of Hell
What about "teacher's pet"?
Helloween - Keeper of the seven keys 🎃
EDIT: Next Venom song should be At War With Satan. If you want more satanic lyrics 😁
Zodijackyl Countess Bathory live where Cronus destroys his bass at the end. OMG It’s my favorite VENOM song
The energy and build up in BURIED ALIVE
Iron Maiden - Seventh Son Of a Seventh Son
According to Chronos (the singer/bass player) they were always tounge in cheak, to shock parents basically.
I can see how this evolved into it. Musically, anyway. Lyrically, it reminds me of Kill 'em All.
Metallica greatly influenced by those bands and the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal
yeah, mostly Whiplash and Metal Militia lyrically
as for the sound, i think it was that era of late 70s and early 80s, when a lot of rock/metal had the same tone and distortion effect, which sounded more like Overdrive. The bass in the 70s was also raw sounding with mid and highs and less lows, until the 80s gave a lot of low end to overall music, including the kick drum.
Metallica opened for Venom to support Kill 'Em All. Metallica openly references Venom as an influence... not the other way around.
yeah, I've seen that, the little I know from KISS has the same kind of lyrics though. just rocking out. a bunch of young bands in all genres did those kind of lyrics for a couple of songs.
Sori is starting to figure black metal out in a huge level. So proud!!!! :')
Check out Welcome to Hell by Venom. It's the title track off the first lp. Black metal is their second. Nice job with this!
You definitely should do a video on Celtic Frost. Circle of the Tyrants or maybe Into the Crypt of Rays. That is totally one of the major first wave of Black Metal bands.
Iron Maiden-Phantom of the Opera (live at the Rainbow or live at Ullevi)
That is Maidens best song.
I listened to that album a lot back in the day. So did my neighbours, bless 'em.
Also also, you hear a lot of stuff that sounds like this lyrically in thrash metal and some power metal bands (like Hammerfall & Grave Digger).
@Ella Watson THAT'S THE WRONG VENOM, YOU DINK.

Arch Enemy - We Will Rise + Fields of Desolation (LIVE Tyrants of the Rising Sun)

Agreed... studio version off "De Mysteriis..." with Atilla on vocals is superior...

Whoa Live in Leipzig is the definitive Mayhem LP. All the other LP's have atrocious vocals that sound comedic.

Why?
All the music we know today as Black Metal is based on the album 'Under the sign of the Black Mark'. Most Black Metal bands still copy the style invented by Quorton.
So?
Maybe all black metal YOU know sounds like Bathorys 3:rd album, but that but that don´t make Venom less black metal.
The first Bathory album sounds like Venom
@@goatpunk EXACTLY! We love Bathory but there is no dispute that Venom created Black Metal. You hear the influence in Bathory's first album. Because they evolved and others bit off that, there's no way mean that they are not influenced by Venom as well.
