Gooey Butter Cake was a staple for events for my mom. I have actually never made it but remember it so well. Monster cookies was always a family favorite. For years my mom had lost the recipe and I was heartbroken because there were times I totally craved those cookies. Until I ran across a Food Network southern cook who made them and I thought the world had opened back up to me! Peanut butter, oats, chocolate chips and M&Ms made for HEAVEN!
My mum made us pineapple upside down cake. She did it in a square pie pan so we could get whole rings of pineapple and a glace cherry in the mix. We each got a square piece of cake with a whole ring of pineapple. We loved it. Another favourite was plain sponge, smeared with raspberry jam and dessicated coconut sprinkled on all sides, she would even do these with fairy cakes. We don't usually eat desserts now but that salted caramel poke cake looked delicious. Thank you for sharing these wonderful recipes with us Amber xxx
To start……make up 4-5 different colors/flavors of jello and put into a loaf pan and chill to set. (I use 1/2 cup less water in each). When set, cut into cubes and loosen from pan. Make another package of jello, this one cherry. Let set until the texture of egg whites. Whip in one package of cool whip til smooth. Add all your colors of cubes jello and GENTLY fold in cool whip mixture. Pour into a graham cracker crust. Chill to set. Garnish with more graham cracker crumbs or fruit, cool whip etc. This is great in the summer. So light, so tasty. A lost dessert recipe from my childhood (1960’s).
Grandmother used to make a killer 3 layer coconut cake poking holes thru to drench in coconut milk not sure what icing but it seemed to be shiney like it was cooked icing , best ever 👍👍
For me, it's my mama's banana pudding with nilla wafers, ripe bananas, and beaten egg whites for the top, then she put it under the broiler for a few minutes. To this day, I have not had one to equal hers 😋
Ripe bananas are rarely used in banana pudding. Bananas on the edge of despair are the best choice for homemade banana pudding with vanilla wafers and egg white meringue.
chocolate cherry cake was the staple at our family holidays and gatherings . That is chocolate cake with cherries inside the cake and vanilla frosting in the middle with cut cherries and some chocolate chips and then add the top layer and frost that and then add cut cherries all the way around and on top with chocolate chips . It is a very pretty cake too .
The dessert my mom made was a creamy, silky chocolate pie. Then she would make whipped cream with heavy cream and frost the top with it. We would often ask for it for our birthdays. For that my mom would drain maraschino Cherie on a couple of paper towels then arrange them around the outer edge & put candles in the cherries. My mom died in 1985 & my dad gave all of her recipe books away. My sisters & I have been searching for a recipe similar to hers. I just found one about 3 months ago & I can’t wait to make it for my family at Christmas.
Pound cake makes me think of my mother and the ones she always made when I was growing up. I made a gooey butter cake for Thanksgiving that my youngest requested. My favorite way to change it up is by using a strawberry cake mix and adding a cup of chopped, fresh strawberries to the cream cheese layer.
All the recipe's look delicious but the donut bundt cake if you use the colored green and red sugar you'd have a perfect wreath cake for Christmas. Ty for sharing these recipes!
Omgoodness...I made your caramel apple poke cake to take to a family gathering last night, and boy was it a hit! I was DELICIOUS! Thank you so much for sharing this recipe ❤❤❤
I grew up in the 80s with a single dad of 4. He made Rum Balls and Pecan Tossies. That is what I remember about the holidays. Dad is a great cook and passed it on to my sister and I. Well, she's a better cook but I'm the baker.
I am ready for this butter cake! when i was little i used to eat butter by the stick! i am not afraid of BUTTER! LOL My mom and dad said I was a little butter thief!!!! Thank you!
My grandmother's yams and marshmallows was always the first thing to go next to the collard greens and my cousin Angela's mac n cheese every Christmas & Thanksgiving! For me, my kids like my banana pudding and my mom's homemade cheesecake and her peach cobbler.

We all(there is LOTS of us) miss our Grandma so much! But there's things she cooked to-everyone's favorite, her cantaloupe pie! It was SO good, we looked everywhere for the recipe when she passed but it was no where to be found. She could be a trickster so I told them. she threw that away, lol We all have tried the ones on the Internet but they are missing something, she is laughing at us, we know it, lol...but you should try one and see what you think...

My grandmother used to make a peanut butter cake. I have the recipe - it has 3 CUPS OF SUGAR in the cake itself alone, and then there's more in the icing! I'm watching your ooey gooey butter cake recipe and it's not dissimilar. I haven't yet tried to figure out how to make the PB cake low calorie - one of these days I will modify it so I can have it again. Thanks for the traditional cake ideas!
