What a great experience at the creator's summit. Looking forward to the HL15 as I have quickly outgrown my Synology. I think there is a big market gap in the homelab space between desktop compute and old server hardware.
I am now lusting after one of those HL 15's, think I might have to save my pennies for one. I've been wanting something to replace my define R5 without having a huge define XL and I don't have anywhere to put a rack. Also very cool to see all the videos coming from the techtubers who were at this event. So happy to see someone is finally giving some love to the homelab market, like Jeff from Craft mentioned if you browse through some subreddits and homelab/DIY storage focused forums there is an opportunity here that no company has addressed yet.
I 3d printed something similar for my Fractal Design case, but it was quick and dirty. It basically just allows you to mount 4 drives to each other, and then utilizes the bottom drive's bottom screw holes to mount to the case. This definitely inspired me to redesign the mount and the new heat press tools I have :D
Damn I just moved and have no room for a lab of any size to speak of, that HL-15 Looks hella interesting, will defo be keeping an eye out for it. Did you happen to know what kind of filesystem that was on machine ? Or still information waiting to come out from 45drives.

@@TechnoTim U.3 is an interesting beast... U.3 drives use the same physical connector as U.2 drives (and SAS), but allow NVMe to be used, and you could have a U.3 NVMe drive or U.3 SAS (never seen SATA drive use that connector format though). There's also been some back and forth over whether "U.3" is the name for the new connection standard or not... some people prefer to call it a 'Tri-Mode' connection, but I just like U.3 because it's somewhat an evolution from U.2 and it's easier to conceptualize. The fact is has '3' modes makes it even better!
So you're telling me that 45 Drives is making a case that makes digging up my Cooler Master Stacker STC-T01 and filling it with 4x IcyDock Black Vortex MB074SP-1B was a waste of time!?! It's not like I ordered the fourth Black Vortex from Australia because it's been discontinued or anything..... Anyways looks great, really curious what their pricing will be like.
The mix and match of SSD and HDD chasis looked more interesting for homelabs than the homelab specific one. It looked like it just sacrificed 3 HDDs to add a handful of SSDs. Since large SSDs are expensive, having a handful in front of a bunch of HDDs is often a better option for homelab. Especially great for something like Unraid. I know they're quality chasis, but those prices are still high and I would like front accessible drive bays instead of having to slide the unit forward in the rack to swap a drive. That second part is more of a want than a must have.
I agree with homeland NAS opportunity. I wouldn’t touch QNAP after their security issues and Synology is still shipping 1Gbps in most machines. You have to spend > $600 for the opportunity to spend another $160 for 10Gbps.
If you want to do this on a Budget you can use an HP z440 computer with LSI 9300 SAS controller and add in internal Harddrive cage for a total of 8 internal hard drives. You could put together an entire Xeon computer with 64gb ECC Ram and controller for about $300. Or you could use one of these motherboards in your HL15
I can't wait for the HL15 to come out, I would love to buy the case with no mobo or PSU so I can do away with my corsair 750D case thats served my NAS needs for a decade.
The HL15 barebone chassis is way too expensive for what you get. $800 + shipping and depending on location, import tax, is too much for only 15 drive spaces..
Wouldn't a valid deployment of this server chassis be to build it with a pcie drive? If you were doing it at home you could steal the x16 slot for 4 nvme drives, but if you wanted something faster you could always put in a solid state add-in card. I'd do that before sacrificing spinning disk space for 2.5 inch drives, if I needed something fast to boot from.
