Honestly meeting you was a highlight of my trip. And realizing you are even taller than me, and can handle every hot sauce in the Hot Ones lineup with barely a flinch!
One tiny drop of Apollo almost burnt my tongue. 😅

It is not often you see the Uber Makers all together. No hint of "competition" amoungst them. Each is an educator to me, and they give up all they know, selflessly. 45 Drives needs to be comgradulated for their efforts to bring all this tech to us, via the people we trust.

Tim you're my favorite technical presenter (I hate, HATE "creator" nonsense), and not only enjoy every one of your videos but you're the one I reference/recommend to people all of the time. Glad you were invited up there! I noticed all of the "creators" getting Storinators last year. Figured something was up.
Your video presentations are direct, to the point, very well documented, and a pleasure to watch again and again. I've told other TH-cam channels to copy your way of doing video, description, blog, etc., because it's the fastest way for ME to understand information. You cover all of the bases. You're my "software guy go-to," while @ArtOfServer is my hardware go-to. He's the same as you: direct, to the point, and gives you the 100% facts. :) We need more like you.

I 3d printed something similar for my Fractal Design case, but it was quick and dirty. It basically just allows you to mount 4 drives to each other, and then utilizes the bottom drive's bottom screw holes to mount to the case. This definitely inspired me to redesign the mount and the new heat press tools I have :D

@@TechnoTim U.3 is an interesting beast... U.3 drives use the same physical connector as U.2 drives (and SAS), but allow NVMe to be used, and you could have a U.3 NVMe drive or U.3 SAS (never seen SATA drive use that connector format though).
There's also been some back and forth over whether "U.3" is the name for the new connection standard or not... some people prefer to call it a 'Tri-Mode' connection, but I just like U.3 because it's somewhat an evolution from U.2 and it's easier to conceptualize. The fact is has '3' modes makes it even better!

The mix and match of SSD and HDD chasis looked more interesting for homelabs than the homelab specific one. It looked like it just sacrificed 3 HDDs to add a handful of SSDs. Since large SSDs are expensive, having a handful in front of a bunch of HDDs is often a better option for homelab. Especially great for something like Unraid. I know they're quality chasis, but those prices are still high and I would like front accessible drive bays instead of having to slide the unit forward in the rack to swap a drive. That second part is more of a want than a must have.

You could put together an entire Xeon computer with 64gb ECC Ram and controller for about $300. Or you could use one of these motherboards in your HL15

Wouldn't a valid deployment of this server chassis be to build it with a pcie drive? If you were doing it at home you could steal the x16 slot for 4 nvme drives, but if you wanted something faster you could always put in a solid state add-in card. I'd do that before sacrificing spinning disk space for 2.5 inch drives, if I needed something fast to boot from.

45Drives had a great opportunity to simply deliver an AV15 Case + Backplane at a REASONABLE price point. Instead they took the tone-deaf approach (as evident in their r/DataHoader post) of building a “hackable” Synology. The Chassis + Backplane for $800+shipping+import is clearly an after-thought as there are no specifications to speak of and their only media release is a cringey 30min video showing xfer speed of their pre-built system.
Will be interesting to see the YT Creators response to the HL15 once it ships...

unfortunately the homelab stuff isn't priced realistically even for the spendiest of home labbers

Dunno, the pricing is more viable for mid size business not for the homelab.

@@marcogenovesi8570hey! So yep our home lab website is live - and we are in presale. The price for the HL15 with backplane, cables and power distribution block is $800. I promise you guys that we did our absolute best to keep the prices down as much as possible. We work on very thin margins as we are a cost + company. Our chassis are built to last. We are still actively supporting servers 10 years old in the enterprise and we aren’t like other vendors who will charge an arm and a leg to support “end of life” products. Hope that helps !

45 DRIVES WHAT A SCAM !!! 45 drives will charge you 2000 or more just for a computer case !!! and they pay or give gifts to youtubes to promote ther product , they have the spec of ther machine on the site ,, so for a server that cost lest say 5000 the hardware mb , cpu , ram ,controlers ,psu , cables , cost less than 2000 , and you end up pay 3000 for a blody case !!! and the dude that will spend 1houers assembling it , and install the os ,
