Until you get a bigger rack you can mount stuff like your UPS that is half depth or less in the back instead of the front to get a little extra space. I have a 25U server and this is what I do to squeeze a little extra space out of it. I'm super jealous of the new server!

I find the 15 and 45 drive models kinda weird to be honest. The 30 and 60 bay models make sense since 30 and 60 have a lot of factors (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10 and 15) which allow for identically sized vdevs when using ZFS, but 15 and 45 don't have the same advantages. but I wouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth.
45 is pretty decent for ZFS with 5 x 9 drive arrays RAIDZ2 -- sweet spot of storage efficiency and performance. 45Drives has new server layouts coming soon with more hybrid options for mixed environments
@@frizzletits8511 hot spares with zfs can be somewhat problematic... mainly because of how good the software is at recognizing drive failure ... but it could simply be an error and want to fail over to hot spare so quickly that it mess with your array(s). I like smaller raid sidings too because you get better performance across the board haha density is great but not when it's slow as molasses
Hey, you might want to check the RAM configuration in the new Storinator, looks like 1 of the sticks is in the wrong slot? 3 on 1 side and 1 on the other looks wrong to me, meaning your not utilising your quad channel memory?
Question @TEchno Tim - AT about 3:19 to 3:26 the RAM have 3 Dimm in one side and 1 Dimm in the other side, isn't this badly balanced for a single CPU and shouldn't they be distributed on each side?

I love JBODS, Also just buy a bigger 37U or 42U rack, they arent expensive. also I'm sure storinator supports more than what you specified, I have a JBOD with 20 bay storage and it handles over 250TB and I'm sure it could handle any drive size I have
We bought a Storinator, they look cool, but our Storinator just isn't powerful enough for the $$$ compared to older used Dell machines with multiple processors.
@@wayland7150 definitely not. We use it for storage, but this storage has read/writes from over 50 processing machines at a pretty high rate and varying file sizes. We are moving to a cluster setup very soon.

While you are expanding your home lab I am restructuring and shrinking all of my computer usage down to as little devices as possible, removing services if they aren't critical. No more network cabinet for me, too big, takes up too much space, and, it is too loud + power hungry. My goal is to limit as much of daily workload to the Steam Deck, and have anything else handled by my Desktop Workstation that will be power limited for both the CPU & GPU in order to save power, thus saving money..... The huge hikes in energy costs in Europe mean that it just isn't realistic to be running this kind of OTT hardware at home, particularly anything that is Xeon-based due to the power usage of those parts regardless of how new they are (at least as of September 2022). Energy costs now FAR exceed any cost savings from buying used hardware that uses more power but is initially cheap to buy outright. I don't see how these data centers can justify their huge power usage anymore, their needs to be regulation brought in to force them to REDUCE overall energy usage on a yearly basis, that needs to happen globally.

RAID-Z2 is a smart choice. I once had an 8 drive setup where 2 drives died almost simultaneously. This concerned an Opensolaris 8 x 1.5TB disk setup, also running RAID-Z2. Then one of the drives failed, and I went into the textbook process of running a latest zfs snapshot send / receive to my other backup storage machine and replacing the faulty drive . ALL of these operations failed for mysterious reasons. Turns out there was another disk about to die, which had not been detected by the system yet - which basically stalled all I/O operations. Only through some really in-depth analysis with obscure opensolaris tools I found the culprit. I had to physically remove that drive, and put in 2 fresh drives for the rebuild of the array. This 15 drive 4U storinator is completely pointless. You can get 16 drive bays in 3U case with drive cages that allow to replace hard drive even without moving server in rack.
Agreed. I went ultra cheap with stuffing 20 drives into a fractal define xl case which took 2 sas controllers and a 10g nic. Eventually I’ll switch to rack mount, but it works for now.
This video is so unrelatable to the theme of homelabbing. It just showed up on my feed and so I went to 45 drives site and this is at least a $11000 US server. Who could afford to have this in their homelab? I love most of Techno Tim videos but this one is just silly. (Now if 45 drives sent me one of these I wouldn't complain....LOL)
Hey! Check out the HL15! It’s a cheaper option of the AV15! The spirit of homelabbing isn’t the device you use but hoe you use it. Most older enterprise servers cost more than that when they were new, probably double.

This 15 drive 4U storinator is completely pointless. You can get 16 drive bays in 3U case with drive cages that allow to replace hard drive even without moving server in rack.
Agreed. I went ultra cheap with stuffing 20 drives into a fractal define xl case which took 2 sas controllers and a 10g nic. Eventually I’ll switch to rack mount, but it works for now.

This video is so unrelatable to the theme of homelabbing. It just showed up on my feed and so I went to 45 drives site and this is at least a $11000 US server. Who could afford to have this in their homelab? I love most of Techno Tim videos but this one is just silly. (Now if 45 drives sent me one of these I wouldn't complain....LOL)
Hey! Check out the HL15! It’s a cheaper option of the AV15! The spirit of homelabbing isn’t the device you use but hoe you use it. Most older enterprise servers cost more than that when they were new, probably double.
