It was kind of a paisley underground thing, but the musicians I hung with all recognized the songs as high quality compositions, and fkn great pop. "Look on Up At the Bottom" is like a fantastic but lost Jefferson Airplane track, delivered with real power by Lynn Carey. Thank you, Ms Hoffs, that was cool.

  • @jackprecip5389
    @jackprecip5389 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Great collection of films. Incredibly impressed she chose Seconds, which isn't everybody's cup of tea (probably the slowest paced first half hour in cinema history), but a film that in my opinion is the single most depressing film about human nature that I've ever seen (which is quite the compliment), and I've seen thousands. Hoffs still has those beautiful big "cute eyes" of a teenager, now with the blend of mature and dignified features of an attractive 64 year old, and she still looks great. She's so wonderful in these 4 minutes, that I almost feel guilty that I never liked The Bangles.
    Also, love the Saul Bass reference. Makes me want to ask Susanna Hoff's for a cup of coffee just to get her opinion on Saul Bass' only directorial effort, Phase 4, because I'm now almost sure Hoffs would have interesting and enlightening things to say about it.

    Klute is such a great film. Gordon Willis was the master of chiaroscuro in film.

    Funny how in the yo la tengo vid, ira kaplan picked beyond the valley of the dolls and said he thought everyone who does one of these vids would pick it too. and now we've got another musician in the closet and it's the first movie she picks

    I just wanna point out that us young people have it so easy when it comes to seeking out media. Susanna and everyone that came of age before the internet actually had to do legwork to go see a foreign and/or art film. They didn't have listicles or hot takes to build opinions around instantaneously.

    I saw somewhere that John Frankenheimer went to a VHS store looking to get a copy of "Seconds." They didn't have one. They consulted their supplier's catalogs, and none of them carried it. He directed it, but couldn't get a copy. I don't remember if he ever got one. I think a big part of the problem was that it had been made for network TV. That used to be a big thing.

    Totally agree with you on Seconds. Saw it a year ago and freaked me out. Almost Twilight Zone ish. The Malibu party had a surreal tone.
    Love your Rickenbacker! Kind of a John Lennon 325 meets- you!!!

    Killer selection.
    I saw Klute and Midnight Cowboy at the drive-in. (I'm gezzin'")
    Never saw Seconds... can't wait to find a copy.
    Thanks.
    Peace on earth.

    Susanna Hoff's did a better Criterion Picks video than most Directors and Actors. Many of them just ransack the Blu Rays and barley talk about the movies and why they like them.
