I'm 65 and my wife almost 70. I wish we could listen to this song together after all the hard times, 6 kids and endless challenges.......I wish I could serenade her with this.
Isn't Susanna Hoffs beautiful though, even at 65 she is a 7/10. Which cumulative looks score like that she's basically one of the best looking women around.
I’m 66. My wife left me for Hank the milkman. I wish she could listen to me sing this but she’d rather hear Hank doing it. My version is better.

Just a thought that came up after reading your post: DO IT, do what you mention, do what you dream about. I guess I would be pondering just like you what might be the perfect time for doing something like this, but there isn't. I'm pretty sure it will be a magical moment for you and even more important for your wife.
Why can't you?
Susanna hoffs, angelic voice, beautiful face, sweet smile, the most beautiful eyes in music history.
The Eternal Flame of my heart.
And she still is. I’ll say though that little sideways glance she does reminds me of why a whole generation fell for her.
And almost got her kicked out of the group! 😆 Apparently they were very jealous about it and thought she was hogging the spotlight with it! She said, she didn't even realize she was doing it!
Today’s pop music really can’t hold a candle to 20th century tunes and true musicianship.
So true.
I don't follow current pop music fanatically (I hear the most popular songs periodically just by virtue of them floating my way), but you have to admit: "today's music sucks compared to the crap from when I was young" is a BS assessment, and has been so every decade since music was invented. Surely, if you remember 80s 90s music being good, you remember Baby Boomers and the Silent Generation taking a steamy dump all over it.
@@admiral.cosmos what current song is a classic like this?
@@imalwaysright We'll find out later. But I'm guessing something from Dua Lipa's or Lady Gaga's repertoire would be regarded as such at the very least.

"The Bangles - Eternal Flame" is a song that has become an enduring classic of 1980s pop music. Written by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly, the song was originally intended for another artist, but was ultimately recorded by The Bangles in 1988. Since then, "Eternal Flame" has been covered by numerous other artists, and has continued to resonate with audiences across the world.
At its core, "Eternal Flame" is a love song that speaks to the eternal, unchanging nature of true love. The lyrics are simple yet powerful, evoking a sense of romantic devotion and passion that transcends time and space. The song's opening lines, "Close your eyes, give me your hand, darling/Do you feel my heart beating/Do you understand?" immediately set the tone for the song, drawing the listener in and inviting them to join in the love story being told.
As the song progresses, the imagery becomes more poetic and evocative, with lines like "Say my name, sun shines through the rain/A whole life so lonely, and then you come and ease the pain/I don't want to lose this feeling" painting a vivid picture of the intense emotions being experienced by the speaker. The chorus, with its repetition of the phrase "Eternal flame," reinforces the sense of everlasting love that the song is conveying, while the soaring vocals of lead singer Susanna Hoffs add an extra layer of emotion and intensity to the performance.
One of the reasons that "Eternal Flame" has endured so well over the years is its ability to capture the essence of the 1980s pop sound while also transcending that era. The song's production, with its shimmering synths, jangly guitars, and lush harmonies, is very much of its time, evoking the sound of other classic 80s pop hits like "I Think We're Alone Now" by Tiffany and "Walk Like an Egyptian," also by The Bangles. However, the song's emotional depth and timeless themes have ensured that it remains relevant and resonant even as musical styles have shifted and evolved.
Another reason for the enduring popularity of "Eternal Flame" is the song's universal appeal. At its core, the song is a celebration of love and devotion, and its themes and imagery are relatable to anyone who has ever been in a romantic relationship. Whether it's the intense rush of emotions that comes with falling in love, or the sense of comfort and security that comes from being with someone you care about deeply, "Eternal Flame" captures these feelings in a way that is both specific and universal.
In addition to its lyrical and musical strengths, "Eternal Flame" is also notable for its performance and production. The Bangles were known for their tight harmonies and impeccable musicianship, and these qualities are on full display in the song. From the delicate guitar work to the lush backing vocals, every aspect of the song is crafted with care and attention to detail, creating a sonic landscape that is both beautiful and affecting.
Moreover, the song's production is a testament to the skill of its producers and engineers. From the sparkling synths to the soaring strings, every element of the song is mixed and balanced with precision, creating a sonic tapestry that is both complex and cohesive. The result is a song that sounds as fresh and vibrant today as it did when it was first released over three decades ago.
In conclusion, "The Bangles - Eternal Flame" is a timeless classic of 1980s pop music that has continued to resonate with audiences across the world. Its simple yet powerful lyrics, lush harmonies, and shimmering production create a sonic landscape that captures the essence of true love and devotion

She's a stunner. Not just for her looks, but also her talent.
You can debate the most beautiful singers of that era, but IMO there's no argument about the sexiest eyes: Susanna Hoffs.
I love Susama Hoff her fantastic voice, her beautifull face... she, for me, is the Perfection!!😍😍😍
There are lots of lovely faces that I remember from back in the day, and when I go back and look now...maybe the bar has been set higher over the years? I don't know, but often I do not find them quite as beautiful as I once did. They do not have the same effect on me.
Susanna Hoff, however....I still find her absolutely gorgeous. I saw recent pictures of her a little while ago and she still looks lovely to this day! And still has a great voice - maybe even better than before!

1989. I was 18 years old, just joined the Air Force. Was in a tech school dorm. Just got my first paycheck. I bought a boombox and some tapes. One of them was The Bangles. This song was playing one day while I was looking out the window of the dorm onto the quad area. I was thinking about the girl I left behind, where my Life was going being an Airman now, and the world was a whole lot simpler than this upside down, through the looking glass tranny world we live in today.

1989, the last year of the best decade ever!! I miss the 80s!!
The Bangles should be in the hall of fame. There as good as many that are there and better than many.
One thing about the "visuals" and beauty of the group that always gets disregarded/set aside is how all members are so beautiful and magical in their own ways, you have Susana who completely took over the fans and made so many people (and cameras) fall in love with her for her alluring eyes and mermaid strong voice, but she also stands out thanks to the strong presence of the other girls, who are all taller and longer than her, with strong facial structures that really remind me of witches from another era (and I say this as a heartfelt compliment to them), creating a beautiful balance with her petite frame and delicate voice plus features. Susana alone can take over fans, music, but altogether proved to be not only underrated af til today, but also power vocals and a legendary group.
She really knew how to work a crowd and TV with those eyes always knowing where the camera is!
Close your eyes, give me your hand, darling
Do you feel my heart beating?
Do you understand? Do you feel the same?
Am I only dreaming?
Is this burning an eternal flame?
I believe it's meant to be, darling
I watch you when you are sleeping
You belong with me
Do you feel the same? Am I only dreaming?
Or is this burning (burning) an eternal flame?
Say my name
Sun shines through the rain
A whole life so lonely
And then come and ease the pain
I don't want to lose this feeling, oh
Say my name

The girls harmonize and sing together with tremendous talent. They were really something back in the day, and Susanna still rocks. I love it when she goes for those high notes.
Susanna couldn't really reach that high note. Studio only, probably took her a bunch of takes to reach it. This appearance was a lip-sync of the released single. If you watch recorded live performances, you'll see she always had to dial the volume way back to reach that note. It was an awesome ballad.
I was sixteen years old in 1989. How I loved 80s music, but as the name of the song says, this decade is an eternal flame that will never go out.
Same here!!!
Wonderful arrangement by this classic 1980s female group, The Bangles, epitomises that essence of creativity that emerged in the halcyon period of popular music in those three classic decades, 1960-90 and continues to be pursued by those connoisieurs of romance, love and desire that permiated that era. This US group of four Jewish girls from California left to right, sisters Vicky & Debbie Petersen, lead singer Susanna Hoff and Michaela, produced one of the most polished live performances of any contemporary group, standing before their microphones effusing a result equal to any studio production much to the rapturous applause of the audience at Countdown UK, initially in anticipation, and ultimately at the concluding phrase "Do You Understand", even though acceptance of the comprehension of understanding only intensifies the desire expressed in their vocals and harmony, but does not make the reality any easier in our asset driven culture of now. The Eternal Flame perpetuates the ultimate quest of hope as time passages prolong the driven passion expressed by that sought within The Eternal Flame. Susanna Hof in the verse after the guitar solo hits the highest of high notes, superb from such a petite persona. Ultimately the girls step back from their microphones as they conclude with the perennial question to those on the outer, "Do You Understand" (no not really in an emotional guise, but maybe as the reality of fiscal essence, but that does not make acceptance any easier} and the girls stand humbly to the rapturous applause, hands behind their backs. Time has passed and they are all now in their sixties, married with families confronting the challenges that are embodied by father time and mother nature, but we can all be grateful that in 1989, this performance was captured for eternity and allows us to be submerged within the aura of emotion expressed by this superb female quartet.
