- The 1903 ball in the Winter Palace was a luxurious ball during the reign of the Emperor Nicholas II of Russia. It was held in the Winter Palace, Saint Petersburg, in two stages, on February 11 and 13. All the visitors were in bejeweled 17th-century style costumes, made from designs by the artist Sergey Solomko, in collaboration with historical experts. The entire Imperial family posed in 17th-century costumes, Tsar Nicholas as Alexis, the Empress Alexandra as Maria Miloslavskaya, in the Hermitage Theatre, many wearing priceless original items brought specially from the Kremlin, for what was to be their final photograph together.

This is fantastic, beautiful. Thank you for sharing.
I find it all very fascinating and sad at the same time. I look at those costumes and think that each one is a work of art.
I love 💕 being able to see the details in these photos in color. It takes me back in time. Thank w
Eastern European clothing is so pretty, especially Russian and Ukrainian clothes. ❤
Solche wahnsinnig schönen Kleider , wie aus russischen Märchenfilmen ❤
The Golden Cockerel!
Quite interesting. The narrative was a bit too fast though. I enjoyed the music too. cheers
The fudge and the costumes outlasted them all. I never realized red was such a popular color for men. I knew lumber jacks wore red plaid but they didn't want to be hit by a tree.
Good heavens are you that historically sheltered and uninformed. Red by it’s very color is a masculine color. It was/ is also the color of choice as providing an ornamentive cloth in contrast to the dominant browns, khaki, tans, greys, etc. for military uniforms. But in early uniform was the dominant color for many armies. Red is a very vibrant ,energetic, powerful color of presence and force. A most distinctive and definite masculine color.
In the film, “The Russian Arc”, the ball was recreated with 1200 extras dressed in the same period costumes.
I find the history of the 1903 Ball fascinating. What I wouldn't give to have a deck of those German playing cards or the two-volume book. Thank you so much for this wonderful video!
Во времена СССP эти карты свободно продавались и были почти в каждой семье. Сейчас в России их также легко можно купить.
I think it was a wonderful and amazing two nights With jewelry that appeared and exceeded all expectations And great luxury fashion ...But unfortunately, it was their last concert... 👑👒❤💙💍💎
Very interesting ❤
Great video! I first heard about this Ball over 50 years ago and always found photos of it fascinating--but never like this! The color is just thrilling in terms of adding interest. We shouldn't be smug about all the money these people spent on themselves for this event. What do you think Newport was like in the summer of those years?
The Rurick dynasty was the longest reigning over Russia.
Correct. Roughly 700 years of Rurik dynasty vs 304 years of Romanovs reign. BTW, you could see here the princess Obolensky’s photo . Her family descended from Rurik. Different branch though, mot the one who ruled over Vladimir principality, that eventually became principality of Moscow and finally the Czardom of Russia.
Except that rural was a Viking, not Russian or Belorussian or Ukrainian . Just saying.
They were an Imperial family. They were emperor and empress. A royal family involves a king and queen.
Not emperor, czar. It basically means king, but is derived from "Ceasar". Czar itself apparently was originally the title held by Bulgarian kings, and later adopted by other slavic rulers.
Kaiser is the german version of the same word.
Tsar Martyr Nicholas, please pray for us!!
😂😅😊😅
He can't. He's long dead.

Does it not blow anyone’s mind that Xenia’s costume is like Turandot in the Puccini opera?
what a splendor !
very gorgeous &beautiful❤
I love how the completely German Tsar and his Danish wife and all other aristocrats and royalty who were mostly German, dressed up in Russian traditional clothing and pretended to be Russian. Many of them barely spoke Russian, including the Tsar's wife.
It is so beautiful and so sad. Let's realize what really happened there ❤
Exacto, una elite viviendo a costa de la miseria y muerte de millones de siervos. Mucho tardaron en eliminar tanto parasito.
I know it was February, but they must have turned the heat down when people tried to dance in those outfits.
There's a copy of this in the UPenn/ Philadelphia Library system. I consulted it for a research project in the late 80s. The original, not the reprint.
Enjoyed thank you.
Grandfather❤ do tu watch me everyday and night 😊😊❤❤
Do you have got the detailed list of the participants of this magnificent Ball ?
Slava Russ! My sincere appreciation of this fine presentation. God is ALL.
You mean the guys from Scandinavia? 😂
God save the Romanovs!
😅😂
God didn't save them.
@@tifanyb3954 They were vile. All the way back to the first generation.

This was particularly impressive. And it makes one think. - Boy, are generations a fleeting phenomenon! Schopenhauer teaches us on reality in his "Additional Remarks on the Doctrine of the Vanity of Existence". But Darwinian selection has taught us to ignore it subconsciously.
