Thank You Karolyn for your advice. I was getting a little discouraged with my cake decorating. But practicing on cakes and give them to family members is a great idea.
I'm so glad I found your channel. I want to listen to this every day as I get back into making cakes after quitting for so many years. I realize I made a big mistake because cakes make me happy. Thanks 💃👃❤
Thanks so much for this great informative video! I love that you’re honest & realistic!!! Yes, going above & beyond is a great way of being kind which is always important (it’s best to exude positivity). It also shows people we are grateful for their business!!! You’re wonderful! Take care, hugs!
I just came across your channel. I've been making cakes for the past 30 years for family and friends. Mainly rum cakes, I have just started to make sponge cakes I am considering doing my.cakes for a loving. Thankyou so much for your tips they were very Informative. Sending Love from the UK 🇬🇧
Thank you so much for giving us all this great advice. I’m excited for you to detail more of the operations process because it can be very overwhelming to get it all started. You inspire me to think that someday I can do this full time because I love it. It’s so nice to hear you say that we can’t be great at everything. I’m struggling a bit with fondant but your tutorials have helped so much. Also when you say it’s ok to say no, I have such a hard time with that! I will definitely look into joining a group as well, I wouldn’t have thought about doing that. Thanks again for all of your amazing videos.
Artistic evolution ❣️ I believe you go above and beyond because of your OCD. It’s something I do as well because (OCD) is part of my personality; who I am 😊
Awesome lecture Karolyn. Honestly is the best of policy. What u put into your work always make u a better person. Lastly : The more you give; the more you receive. Sometimes it’s not the person to whom you give will return the favor, it’s a 😮person from afar. Much learned! Thanks for sharing . Congratulations 🎉😅on the success of your Business! You have learnt to creep and now you are walking 🚶♂️.Soon you’ ll be running🚶♀️! 😃👍🙏. Velrine Palmer.
Thank you for making this video. I’m in the making-cakes-and-treats-for-friends stage. Not quite ready to move up yet. This video was very helpful. Thank you again. 🥰
I just found you tonight and I love your personality! I have always loved baking and found it therapeutic to be in the kitchen and started taking orders in December. I was so scared at first but orders have become more consistent and I'm enjoying it. Do you do this all from home? Do you ever plan to get a store front? My friend is wanting me to push in that direction and I don't think i ever want to. I love the thought of staying small and homey, if that makes sense. Love your videos, looking forward to more ❤
Thank you Krysta! It's funny, friends are always the ones telling you to get a store front. But they don't realize how much goes into it. I've known a few people who had store fronts and it was a lot more than I ever wanted to tackle. I am the same as you, I never wanted to go that route so I've been doing it from home since I started. No overhead and I like working by myself. And my commute is down the stairs and I wear leggings every day LOL If you want to grow into something big, then you would have to eventually go in that direction. But if you want to stay small, a home business is ideal!
Idk why... but I must share this. Instead of watching a regular work out video I was watching all your tips and getting a great work out as well! Love all your advice. :)
Very very true what ever you said same when loom other people work I always thing why I can not but at some point I say my self well ** I am happy what I am doing ** And thank you for sharing your ideas 🤗🤗🤗 Question can you share your scratch cakes recipe plz Hopefully this I am trying to make your Vanilla box Doctorate cake 😊
Thank you for these great advices. I also took cake decorating classes from Michaels here in Canada at first and learned how to bake cakes along the way. It does involve a lot of time, and not easy but I actually enjoyed it. I didn’t think it’s profitable as a full time job esp. if people will just low ball with pricing. I’m interested in getting back into baking but only during special occasions to start off and go from there. I do prefer buttercream frosted cakes as you can eat and enjoy the frosting more than fondants, unless it’s home made. I will definitely use your advice to get me going. Most of them I’ve already been doing, I make desserts and share to friends and coworkers, hoping to get some referrals. Wish me luck!😊
You're welcome Ruby! That's a great way to start, practicing your skill and sharing with coworkers and neighbors and friends. It helps to get yourself out there. You got this!! :)
I love the thought of giving a Bigger Cake then ordered. As you said, it does feel good to give a little extra for leftovers. But it also gives you a bigger Canvas to work with. The smaller the cake the smaller the canvas, designs and decorations have to fit the size of the cake. The smaller ones are just flat out harder to do. Got a order last night... An Appreciation Cake, for Nana! Any flavors is fine, no coconut, favorite colors are red and yellow.... Be as creative as you want to be.... Now it's for my ex mother in law, my ex's daughter asked for the cake... So it is weird, but I can totally relate to the meaning of the cake. As I know the lady personally, and totally get why the cake is being given to begin with. She asked for a 6-8" 2 layer cake... I am thinking the 8", and a 3rd layer will give me a bigger Canvas to work with to get in details, designs and decorations that would suit the situation. As weird as it sounds, I Tell everyone I give extra cake to, " I know it's more cake then you need, but if it helps, I won't be offended or upset if you give the extra away or even find yourself throwing the last away. I just wanted to fit everything in the cake and needed a Bigger Canvas to work with. As long as you enjoy as much of it as you can - that's what makes me Happy!"
Great advice, thank you for sharing! I needed this today! Could you make a video on how you do the “paperwork” side? I’ve just became an LLC and trying to get all my ducks in a row😀 Like do you use a certain computer software/app to do invoices, supplies costs, scheduling, etc. Thank you again for all your helpful videos!
OMG you read my mind, I was doing my paperwork yesterday and thought I should film that too LOL I have to figure out the topics to cover and then I will film it. So it will take me a little bit to get that together. :)
Thank you so sooo much for everything im so grateful that i found your channel and im learning alot from you ♥️♥️♥️ just one question how can i get customers more when other bakers are selling cheaper than me in my area, you know people love cheap things and i so much get annoyed when they hear my price and run away for example my price is for 6 inch cake with buttercream and fresh flowers almost 60$ and they still say its expensive 😔💔💔
I still get people who tell me that I am too expensive for them. I just had someone tell me last week that they found someone cheaper to do their cake. That's ok! Understand that a lot of people (especially now) are on a budget. One thing that I do is I offer 2-3 different options for what they want. A low price, medium price and higher price. So, for example, I'll say... I can do (a simple design) for $60. If you want (more detail), it will be $100. If you want (lots of detail), it will be $150. I would NEVER discount my price to get the order. If you do that, people will expect that from you. Just keep refining your craft and find your niche and (from my experience) people will come looking for you! I hope that helps!
Fatima, I understand what you mean. Some people have messaged me and once I send my price list, I don’t hear back. Most people where I live, buy from Walmart or a small local bakery that doesn’t offer many flavor options because it’s cheaper. I make all my stuff from scratch which is expensive but I don’t think people understand that. But once they try them they notice the difference from the supermarket cakes.
I’m a big list person! I make a list of what I want to accomplish that day and cross things off as I do them. And I always take a break during the day to have lunch or go to the gym so I can reset and stay focused for the rest of the day. Last week was one of my busiest ones ever and at the beginning of the week I planned out each day. I hope that helps!
I agree 100% about what you give out, you reveive!! I JUST started baking cakes, primarily for low income families who could never afford a custom cake.... this charity minded baking has quickly developed into receiving orders from people who CAN!! It is such a blessing to bring these children joy!!!
I started slowly, I took classes and made cakes for practice and would bring them to work. My coworkers started ordering cakes from me for their parties. Then people at those parties asked where they got their cakes and started ordering from me. Then people at those parties asked for my number, and so on. It slowly grew that way. I never spent a huge chunk of money to get it started. I would purchase tools and items as I needed them. I also was working another job at the time so I had another source of income. My side hustle became my main gig because I got busier making cakes than selling houses. I hope that makes sense!
No one can really compete with low prices at grocery stores. But a custom cake is VERY different than a grocery store cake! There are many people who want a nice centerpiece for their event and are willing to pay for it. Like handbags, for example...some people want cheap ones from Kohl's, others spend thousands on designer ones. There's a market out there for custom cakes! I don't know if you follow law of attraction principles, but try to change your wording. Instead of saying you can't compete...start saying, "Everyone loves my cakes. I charge what I want and people happily pay because they value me and my work!" You may not believe it at first, but keep repeating it to yourself. I literally repeat that to myself and have manifested it. I hope that helps!
Thank You Karolyn for your advice. I was getting a little discouraged with my cake decorating. But practicing on cakes and give them to family members is a great idea.

Yes! I totally agree. It's so much easier to decorate something a little bigger and people always appreciate more than what they paid for!
Have you made a video on what your testers look like? If not, may be a good video to do..

I found that I cannot compete with the low prices the local grocery chain charges. No matter how fancy. 😢
