They don’t purposely throw it away, if a customer goes to return something and it is opened they can’t sell a product that is open so they have no choice but to throw it away.
Someone should start a free outside library to put all those books in. We have 4 in our town and 3 in our neighboring town. It is one of those take a book and leave a book. I hate seeing books thrown in the trash.
It seriously boggles my mind why companies throw away perfectly good items like clothes and books and movies instead of donating them. Makes me so angry 😡
Agree. And many stores in NJ for example take these things and put them into truck containers with key so nobody can get to them. When I worked at Target I asked the manager why dont they sell it to the employees for really cheap and he said corporate does not allow it. He actually let me have a set a drawing markers I wanted to buy and they were going to "throw away"

I use to work in retail. Corporate made us damage out anything that looked like it had been worn, washed and had a stain on it. It’s sucks you would think they would donate it to like a women’s shelter or something. For inventory we had to damage it out. I would be careful going through dumpster too.. the company I worked for had cameras.

I gotta say you make me so nervous lol the way you and other divers stand there and talk about the stuff and go through the stuff.. I say "grab and get gone" go through it all later at home or a parking lot or something lol keeps my nerves on edge girl🫣
A little insight to those who don’t know.. as someone who has worked a few retail jobs, there are a few different reasons companies end up having employees destroy and toss merchandise. (Yes I agree it sucks). One of the reasons items are destroyed is because people who do take the items out of the trash might then take the merchandise back into the store and get a non-receipted store credit for items they never purchased to begin with and basically the company is then paying someone for “stealing” their merchandise. And a lot of times those people end up selling those store credit gift cards to make money. Also big companies don’t have the payroll or time to donate from each and every store the amount of things that get toss daily. Another big thing is they cannot let employees or anyone else just take the items because what ends up happening is unfortunately certain employees will take advantage of that and then all of the sudden there is an increase in purposefully “damaged” items so that people can take them for free even if the item was perfectly fine. So they really have no choice but to say destroy it and throw it away. Not to mention sometimes people will throw things in the trash and have someone else then come pick them up to resell so they try to avoid that as much as possible im sure. And most of the items that get thrown away are obviously damaged things that they can’t sell at a discount cause no one wants them.. stuff that gets recalled for cancer or safety issues etc. … or returns that can’t be put back on the shelf. There are other reasons too that’s just some of them. Anyway hope that kind of helped even though no one will probably see this!
But that does not explain or excuse the WHY they’re throwing out food items that are not expired. Our local food banks will pick up food from stores so it doesn’t go to the landfill. It’s just insane that stores are allowed to fill up our landfills with merchandise!
Great finds! I'm so glad you were able to save some stuff from going to the landfill - that's honestly always my biggest motivator if I dive. Unfortunately out here you see a lot of the mixing trash w/ salvagable goods. Also I can confirm as an ex-employee of Half Price Books, EVERY SINGLE NIGHT we pulled at LEAST a huge box full of items to toss in the dumpster. It's all perfectly good, HPB just gets so much new inventory daily that they have to cycle product that often! It always crushed me, and I was so happy whenever our local divers came by. Happy hunting, everyone!!
Hi, I haven’t seen you in awhile… What I would do with some of those books. Take some to the hospital’s emergency room, senior citizen homes, ask some of the schools if they could use some books, shelters, you’d be surprised on what you can do with those books.
as someone who works for one of those companies that starts with V, we actually don’t do that! all of our damaged product gets recycled, so we ship it out to our damage facility (same place where online returns go) and they get recycled

I am completely shocked that the Squishmallows were not given away to kids... like that would be perfect for kids come on! Why companies? Food is understandable but give away items that aren't food if worry about people getting sick/expired.
I love dumpster diving, but it's very illegal where I live, and the dumpsters near any stores are locked, so I go to dumpsters far away from the city, to the paper recycle thingy, because you can find a LOT of books (without covers) from there, and some school books, so I can learn new stuff without paying hundreds of euros

Dumpster Diving Rules Have FUN 🤩 Pick up your mess please and if their is a mess around the dumpster please leave it in better shape that you found it. I now where a mask 😷 and sometimes gloves 🧤. I always have disinfectant gel with me or Lysol wipes to use after dumpster diving. Get a grabber I got one ☝️ at Home Depot. It’s just better if you have one ☝️ to help you.get things out of their better. I carry a sacks to load things into. Or keep a box or container in your truck to put things into. I carry trash bags also to help out. . I used a bucket I had in the beginning but finally got a step stool. You can use wherever at first. I used a curtain rod. I used a shower bar. It’s better if you can get a grabber Better to go during the day. It’s kind of dangerous at night to dumpster dive. It’s a lot more fun 🤩 to take a buddy. Oh this is one of the most important things. Figure out the schedule. I use to check ulta or wherever and I would write ✍️ down if it was empty or full on each day. Until I figured out what day the trash garbage men were coming to pick up the trash from the dumpsters. I usually went every single day to figure out the schedule.

I can’t stand it that Gap and Old Navy cut the clothing up so no one can use it! Why don’t they donate it? It adds to our landfills when it doesn’t have to. These companies should be fined for not disposing of their rejects to people that need it. Heck, have a Dollar sale at their store and they would be swamped with customers.
Any retail stores should try to salvage clothing that can be and donate them to family shelters instead of ripping them up rendering them useless. Such a shame.
Heyy, I live in Australia and don't known very much about dumpster diving, so do they cut up the clothes so that people can't find them and take them home?
I've watched a lot of your videos but I never envy you as much as I have today because of those books. I am a book collector i read a lot and I like to surround myself with books so it saddens me to see those books lying in the trash.

All half price books do that and it is a shame $1000s of dollars of books and dvds daily per store. I hate they waste so much I always take what I cam and donate to nursing homes children's homes etc
Hi, former book employee here. So....the manager books probably are ones without ISBN numbers on them and are pre release? Sometimes they send them out to bookstores as promotional books and distribute them to employees if they wish to take one. These cannot be sold or returned to publisher. As for why some of those books are in there? They probably also cannot be returned to the publisher and/or are unsellable. Probably also small amounts of damage to pages or covers. So in those cases we would throw out the books as they are unsellable. Also older versions of books that aren't in the system also need to be discarded as they cannot be sold. Hope that helps!
we can't justify throwing away new books because they don't have an ISBN, or are a little damaged, we can always give them to people who can't afford a book
To answer a few questions ive seen in the comments I worked in Topshop in the UK also Debenhams The reason we disposed of makeup perfume ect is due to customer returns if the product or garment comes back damaged we cannot resell that item its sad and wasteful but thats what Management make us do

Stores should be donating this stuff. I hated working at Bath and Bodyworks and destroying perfectly good product. They should be donated!!! The rich hate parting with stuff!
It's a shame to see new products thrown away and deliberately damaged so that they no longer have any use. in europe, a law was passed in 2023 so that new products are no longer thrown away, but recovered, recycled or given to the most deprived.
As a manager/employee I couldn’t do it. I would have “thrown it away” and went back at night to get the stuff and donate it.

The stuffed animals would be great to donate to a womans shelter or police station, for the kids going though trauma.
I usually take my books up to the Nursing Home were I work at and put in the break room or the residents library..
I don’t get how companies are even allowed to throw perfectly good stuff away, and the fact that some of the workers get made at people for going through it!

I can’t stand it that Gap and Old Navy cut the clothing up so no one can use it! Why don’t they donate it? It adds to our landfills when it doesn’t have to. These companies should be fined for not disposing of their rejects to people that need it. Heck, have a Dollar sale at their store and they would be swamped with customers.
Any retail stores should try to salvage clothing that can be and donate them to family shelters instead of ripping them up rendering them useless. Such a shame.

I've watched a lot of your videos but I never envy you as much as I have today because of those books. I am a book collector i read a lot and I like to surround myself with books so it saddens me to see those books lying in the trash.

What a waste - those clothes could go to shelters.
My son used to find wedding dresses next to a wedding store. It happened several times.
All half price books do that and it is a shame $1000s of dollars of books and dvds daily per store. I hate they waste so much I always take what I cam and donate to nursing homes children's homes etc

Hi, former book employee here. So....the manager books probably are ones without ISBN numbers on them and are pre release? Sometimes they send them out to bookstores as promotional books and distribute them to employees if they wish to take one. These cannot be sold or returned to publisher. As for why some of those books are in there? They probably also cannot be returned to the publisher and/or are unsellable. Probably also small amounts of damage to pages or covers. So in those cases we would throw out the books as they are unsellable. Also older versions of books that aren't in the system also need to be discarded as they cannot be sold. Hope that helps!
we can't justify throwing away new books because they don't have an ISBN, or are a little damaged, we can always give them to people who can't afford a book

The reason we disposed of makeup perfume ect is due to customer returns if the product or garment comes back damaged we cannot resell that item its sad and wasteful but thats what Management make us do

Stores should be donating this stuff. I hated working at Bath and Bodyworks and destroying perfectly good product. They should be donated!!! The rich hate parting with stuff!

Like I worked it retail and we donated everything that didn’t get sold. We just cut all tags off so they couldn’t be returned.

It's a shame to see new products thrown away and deliberately damaged so that they no longer have any use. in europe, a law was passed in 2023 so that new products are no longer thrown away, but recovered, recycled or given to the most deprived.
