- How Often Do You allow yourself to Get Out of Your Comfort Zone? Are you willing to push your vehicle to it’s limits? Do you have the courage to tackle what mother nature throws at you ? I can tell you that sometimes doing the hard things deep off the grid makes for the best adventures.
Over the next few days, I join up with my good friend Nate from the TH-cam channel Dirt Lifestyle to help him develop a 300+ mile Southern California Rocklander Route which is a going to be part of a series of epic adventure routes he is creating across the county and our time together on this adventure was full of many challenges and surprises along the way that neither of us will soon forget anytime soon.

Carry a 18 or 40v electric with you. I use a Ryobi 18v all the for trees up to 12” diameter on our local MTB trails. In a pinch it will do much larger with a little patience. I believe you could have cleared that tree with a couple of electric saws.
Marco and Nate should have a cook off episode. That would be fun, nice trails and amazing food.

I'm 64 and have had two left shoulder surgeries. I feel your pain. In the cold and after one day of exploring. But I love AB and I am not ready to let a bum shoulder prevent me from going. Good job Brad. Nurse that shoulder.
I am 63... Had serious issues with my right shoulder recently for about a half year. Then while camping, something popped. The pain was gone! A slight dislocation? Pinched nerve? I had a bad right collarbone break years back riding dirt bikes.
Love the content, miss the 392! Please bring it back, still living vicariously through you until I can pick my own 392 up.

It's great to see you and Nate doing some wheeling together. Looks like it was a great adventure. It's great that you're showing the typical obstacles we face on the trails, and how easy it is to just change your plans without getting upset. Man I really enjoyed these amazing and epic trails. I absolutely love to watch full sized highly modified rigs conquer the rocks and the different terrain the trails have to offer. Thanks for sharing this adventure keep em coming.
Had a similar situation with my power steering pump return on my ZJ on Miller's jeep trail. I was able to plug the return inlet with a ear plug and route the line into the filler neck and duct tape it in place. It was pretty but it got me off the mountain. Thanks to my buddies for helping me figure it out.

I love waking up to these videos. I have been watching you from the start and sold my JK about 3 years back and stopped watching once I did. I ran across your channel and decide reminisce and about a week later, I am at a jeep dealership picking up a JLU Rubicon and haven't regretted the decision since. That was six months ago and I am already on a clayton 2.5" and 35s. For your loss of power tilted up, that screams to me a fuel pump/loss of prime issue, which could've been initially triggered by the crazy change in altitude you've done in one day. the Silver Jeep has been at it for many years, I would definitely check it out. I had a similar issue on my JK.

Downed Trees are so common now that Started packing a chainsaw with a long bar as standard part of my off-road equipment. One trick you can do on a tree that large is to delimb a section wide enough to pass through while it is still up in the air and after making your 2 main cuts using your wench on one side to hinge the log open like a gate. This can save time from having to slice it up into smaller sections.
If we would have had a chainsaw with us, we probably would have been a little more motived to give it a go.

In October of 2021 I took a spill and ended up with tears in my rotator cuff, bicep tendon head and 3 of the 4 quadrants of my labrum. Did a lot of physical therapy, but my job is pretty physical, so I've reinjured it a few times. Be smarter than I was and take it easy. We understand.

It's really entertaining when you don't make it thru plan A, or B...still you are happy campers, and make plans C and D as you go! In my oppinion as long as you are with good friends, with good skills...this must be quite exciting...👍
Awesome video Josh! I have also heard that too heavy of a weight distribution hitch can also be detrimental by applying to much force to the front frame section.
My Mr. Buddy heater stopped working a few times at King of the Hammers a few weeks ago. I too have a Shift Pod III Mini tent and had two of the top round windows open for ventilation. The heater went out at 3am and wouldn't restart for anything. I opened the door to go outside for a minute, came back in and it started right up! Went out 10 minutes later. I then realized that the CO2 sensor was shutting off for safety. I had to open another window for more air flow and it worked the rest of the night. Good chance there wasn't enough oxygen early in the morning to keep the C02 sensor from preventing ignition. Another great video 🙂
That’s exactly what happens. I have a shiftpod mini and I discovered that a few years back. Tent is too airtight. Windows are good for venting the heat but not enough to flow oxygen back in so when I have the heater on I sleep with the door halfway open.
Brad, We had the same issue with our Mr. Buddy Heat in the morning. If you open a window or the door to get some fresh air in it will work. I believe the heater has a O2 sensor and won't start if it read low O2 in the tent. Hope this helps you out next time you go camping.

Thanks for the great video. I learned that any trip where I will not be in a residential area, interstate, or highway, I usually bring the chainsaw just in case. I ran into some random moments even on back roads in national parks were a tree will fall across the road in a storm that blew through just an hour before and it's really annoying when you don't have anything to remove it, or have wait for a passerby who does.
Nice video Brad. You might have been able to hook onto one end of that tree and yank it around just enough to drive around it.

That tree is a bummer! I’ve carried my Milwaukee electric chainsaw in my Rubicon the last four years, always afraid I might get “blocked in” on some trail in Colorado where there is soooo much Beatle killed pine. Never needed it until last year, on Blowout Pass near Del Norte, and was so glad I had it, saved me about 30 miles back tracking. Really enjoyed the video!

This looks like an awesome route. I did laugh at 1:54 - Incredible adventure, fully built rigs, dangerous trails in the middle of nowhere, mother nature testing everything, ultimate advent....Stock Subaru casually drives by. Haha.

The reason I mentioned this is because I just saw an even sillier situation in another video. The video is called "Now THIS is REMOTE" from the Toyota World Runners channel. They were in the Paracas National Reserve in Peru, one of the most remote and desolate places on the planet. Big cinematic drone shot, narrator explaining how remote and dangerous it is, just as the drone shot is ending a dude in 3 wheeled tuk tuk comes rolling down the track the opposite direction, like just another day. Hilarious.

300K acres. 180+ miles unmaintained roads, 116 back country camp sites, and lots of things to see.

Pinyon Mountain’s The Squeeze is not wide setup friendly. The closer to stock the easier it is to get through. With my JT on 39s and a 4.5 lift my wheels stick out about 6 inches or so past the fender. I had no top or doors on and had to ride the wall on the drivers side. I was inches away from hitting my bed and taillight. I did smash in my rear passenger fender though. That’s a one and done trail for me😂

Great Video! As usual. As for the power loss issue, it might be a wiring issue, something is loose causing a cut in power. Just an idea to help troubleshoot, hopefully everything works out and it’s a quick fix, or it never comes back! ✌️
Hey Brad I have had the same problem with the buddy heater a while back, found out that it has a low oxygen sensor and will automatically shut off, so that might have actually saved you from a rude awakening 😂. I Usually open my tent windows when that happens to reintroduce more air 24:28
Looked like fun and glad you had back-up plans on top of back-up plans. Snow, rocks, downed trees, and desert....what more could you ask for in one trip?

No way! I was out there and ran into those guys in the Sprinter vans too. Was in my white 2 door JK and with my buddy in his grey Cherokee going down Diablo Drop Off when these guys came up it. The first guy in the dark grey van had an Atlas and made it up no problem - but the second in the blue-ish grey Sprinter didn’t have an Atlas he said, and while trying to keep momentum up the grade, we heard a loud pop and it sounded like he broke a driveshaft or something in the transmission as he had no power to the wheels afterwards and had to be pulled up the rest of the way. A couple guys in a Land Cruiser and a Tundra helped them out too. Hope they made it out of there okay! That’s crazy we were all out there the same day, just missed you guys!
I don’t know how you guys time was that day, but you guys could have made a right exiting out of Holcomb Creek onto Holcomb Valley, 3n16, and travel about 1 to 2 miles to Lower Larga Flats, 2N06x, that will drop you off onto Holcomb Creek right past the middle rock garden. From there you can take a trail that will connect you back to 3n16 or jump on 3n14 that would drop you off in Big Bear on the not so busy side of the lake. That road would have taken you guys to the trailhead of Gold Mountain. I visit Big Bear a little too much.😅😅

No sweat bro on the big tree as it was BIG and even if you had your Hamilton Beach electric chain saw I am quite sure it was not up to that job. 😀 The pasta maker attachment on the electric chain saw might have come handy at dinner time, just funning on you. I am sure the on board Nanny didn't like the incline and cut your power back. The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry.
I’m not there but I would have tried taken the saw and notched the top of the tree and used the yankum rope to brake the top off and out of the way. Either way thank you and Nate for taking us all on the journey!
It would have been a bit of work with the handsaw I have. If we would have had a chainsaw, we might have tried giving it a go.
Camped in that same spot in 2008 on Pinion Mnt trail. Unfortunately discovered the Squeeze was too narrow for my Ramcharger.

Coming from northwest that you don't carry a still 390 ranger chain saw in the winter . At 64 in age seen so many people say to much weight then you turn around or get stuck. If you build you own rig you need to think about this at all times.
Spent a lot of family time at Cougar Buttes in the 80s.. Scrambled to the summit many times. Theres a campsite back in there that my dad’s buddies named after him. We hadn’t camped back there since the 90s, but dad & I drove over to check it out a couple years ago. The Buttes see a lot of camping and wheeling but that spot still looked untouched.
Lots of little coves to back a 4x4 into and camp, places you can’t get a toy box into.
I'll definitely be going back for more exploring. Loved it!
I’ve done Holcomb Creek several times but never had to worry about snow. Chainsaw and your winch would have handled the tree.

This is awesome! I ran pinyon valley mountain around 2 weeks ago in my bone stock 2020 Colorado zr2 AEV bison and ended up going both up and down the Squeeze because I chickened out going down heart attack hill 😅
Climbing up the squeeze, wow, I haven't attempted that yet. Heart Attach hill is sketchy for sure.
The nag1 trans doesnt like offcamber and steep stuff with the wheels cranked all the way. There is still ESC on 4lo and its killing the engine.
Also might also lacked trans fluid in the torque converter.
That buddy heater has a sensor and shuts off as a safety if oxygen levels are low...my brother had same issue and all had to do is open up a window slightly and good to go

Man, I would have tried both winches of the far left of that tree to see if it could swing around before turning around. Cool video though, and Brad, I hope your shoulder is on the mend. I’ve been dealing with a torn labrum for years (including surgery), so I feel your pain!
