I bought a custom Damascus blade from Lew a few years ago. I use it daily, so took it to a local knife shop in Singapore to get it sharpened. The old Japanese owner has only the best blades for high-end sushi chefs. He picked up Lew's knife and in his limited English said, 'This is very special knife!!', wanting to know more about where it was created. Heartening to see how craftsmanship crosses culture and language.
Thanks nandu for the kind words I remember making your knife fondly and it is still a favourite of mine with that western style blade shape it came together great. Agreed!
If you don't mind me saying, you should make a die so you don't lose too much material. The extra could be used in a different project. I know the prices for material is high. Great work and thanks for shaving.
A bold and unique pattern, remarkable S grind, polished to perfection and a cutting resonance that rings as pure as a tuning fork. Top notch, well done!
what a gorgeous knife ! back when I worked as a sous in an open kitchen I would have loved something like this. my collection of kitchen knifes isnt great, just functional, and it certainly didnt "wow" anyone lol
I have recently (past month and a half) started watching bladesmiths videos exclusively . As someone who works with metal as a career, I find the content of most smithing videos very soothing. I am so glad that I found your channel! I just knew by the thumbnail, that the end result was going to be amazing. And I was right! AWESOME awesome job. You've got my subscription! I am currently doing research of products to purchase to start making knives myself!
DISCLAIMER: i am not a very experienced bladesmith and i am just repeating what i have read online from hours of research, with a slight amount of personal experience thrown in the mix if you're going for budget, i recommend buying a welder (or borrowing one from a friend) and trying to scrap together a 2x72 belt grinder using an old treadmill. you can build them for around 1 to 3 hundred CAD (about 70 - 230 usd), which is way cheaper than buying one and in order to made quality blades you pretty much have to have one. POWERTEC makes some incredibly cheap aluminum oxide belts. Also i would start off using hand hammers only for at least a year in order to get used to the feeling of moving metal with your hands. Lastly, good luck! although you need tons of fancy equipment to make knives as good as this guy, you can make decent quality knives of your own for basically nothing if you're willing to use budget setups.
Also, as tempting as an outside setup is for the heat dissipation (it gets very hot forging indoors), its not worth it. you end up spending more of your potential forging time deciding that its too cold/hot/rainy/windy to go out there.
So... You do very good work.... But this is my second video of yours that i have watched, and it is almost the same video, slightly different materials but... same handle style, and blade size, If you want to TH-cam... You have the skill to make knives, but youtube is a different... variety is the spice of life.
@@lewgriffinknives216 Thanks or the info! I kind of figured it was something along those lines, but I have very limited knowledge from just watching TH-cam videos like yours, Tyrell Knifeworks, and Kyle Royer. Keep up the amazing work!
@@lewgriffinknives216 Have you tried Epson-HR? Curious as to how they compare, as I've heard Z1100 is better at preventing scale on a wider variety of steels during heat treating, but you can use HR during forging (well, in a press anyway, hammer blows tend to remove it).
Yes, very nice craftsmanship................But this is forge welded and absolutely no way in this universe True, Real, Woots, Damascus steel. The two aren't even remotely the same thing. But very nice work non the less.

What size of wheel do you use for the s grind?
What is the green gel you pain on before normalizing and quenching?
NICEEEEE.......
Question: What etchant are you using?
Gator piss etchant and hcl
What was the green stuff as you were normalizing the blade?
The forbidden crinkle fry.
Which flavour?
What is the purpose of cooling the blade in the sand??
I have to ask, how much does a knife like that usually go for?
Cheap if u do it urself. 500-3000 if someone else makes it
joya!👍

What is that green stuff you painted on the blade before putting the knife in the heat treat oven?
Condursal z1100 anti scale
