Pushing myself to the LIMIT at the Grand Canyon

  • Recently I flew into Oklahoma City to visit my friend Shelby and we took a road trip across the southwestern USA towards the Grand Canyon. Is it the grandest of canyons I've been to? Most definitely.
This is the last trip I shot on my Nikon D750 before trading in all my gear for the Sony A7 IV so enjoy what should hopefully be the last of the shaky, out of focus, footage.

The Bright Angel Trail can take you from the south rim of the Grand Canyon, all the way down to the Colorado River and beyond. We took it down to the river to Pipe Creek Beach which is around a 17 mile round trip with four thousand 800 ft of elevation gain. I learned a valuable lesson that day… when all of the official guides tell you it’s a bad idea to attempt this hike in a single day it’s probably best to listen.
Instead, we decided to go for it and on the way down there were no issues. There are some great views and if you’ve never done this hike before I recommend at least reading about it. We got down to the river in pretty good time and were feeling good before starting the ascent back up to rim. After a mile or so I started feeling a little light headed but nothing too bad so we continued on, stopping in the shade and replenishing water when we could but I was definitely feeling worse and worse as we progressed.
Eventually after getting just past the three mile resthouse the light headedness had turned to feeling nauseous and dizzy and the only thing that helped at that point was lying down. After about an hour and the help of some kind strangers who gave me additional water and food we set off over the last three miles and thanks to Shelby insisting on carrying my backpack for me we made it back to the car. Unfortunately I was in no shape to spend any more days hiking so we cut the trip short and set off back east, towards Oklahoma.
I was fortunate that I came out of this with a story. I saw on the news not long after my trip that a Canadian Hiker, not much older than me, sadly passed away right around the same spot that I had to lie down after doing the same hike. So if my story isn’t a lesson for you, please let that be and be careful on your adventures. Listen to the experts. I wish I had.
