I'm a Moccamster owner (two years) but bought the Aiden. I ended up returning it after nine days. I would say the pot of coffee was very similar to that made in the Moccamaster, perhaps VERY slightly smoother and a BIT more chocolatey notes, but in no way was it producing anything close to what I can make when I make actual pour over. What I really hated about it was the carafe didn't keep anything hot for more than about 20 minutes (Fellow promised "for hours"). I also hated that it kept turning itself on occasionally for no apparent reason (came out of Sleep mode) and also did this whenever the lid was opened, meaning if I removed the filter holder with coffee in it and removed the carafe from the machine that's two times it turned itself on, and it also turned itself on when I slid the carafe back in and opened the lid to put the cleaned filter holder back inside the machine. If it had a button I could push each time to turn it back off that would have (kind of) been okay, but I had to scroll through a menu back to Sleep EVERY DAMNDED TIME, DAY AFTER DAY, to the point I'd had enough.
Even things like the Moccamaster having a flat/wide filter holder bottom that allowed me to grind coffee directly into a filter in it and also pour beans in it on a scale to then pour them into the grinder was something I missed quite a bit. The Aiden has rounded filter holders that don't stand up. That meant I had to grind beans into a fairly tall glass, and then pour them into the filter (not that easy without making a mess if not careful).
While I look forward to the Aiden 2 (or whatever they'll call it), I didn't think this first effort lived up to its promise in any way at all, and with just a 2 year warranty (extendable to 3 years when you register) and with all the sensors to go wrong over time, I just didn't feel this was a good buy and it wasn't a pleasure to use. (I was actually glad to have it out of my house.)
The main thing I wanted it for was the pour over-like coffee capabilities and either I'm really good with the Studio Pro kettle and Tally scale in making pour over it can't match, or it just doesn't do this well yet in this first version.
As with every single Fellow Product I've ever bought, too, there was an issue with the registration and this time a promised confirmation e-mail that it was registered never materialized, so I had to take time dealing with the company to get some kind of confirmation. (One time even though I entered the serial number on a product exactly Fellow's site then told me the product was already registered. Huh? That took a lot of time to straighten out too.)
Fellow seems they should be in a place by now not to have these kinds of issues, and of course the promised app also didn't work when machines were selling in stores (Williams-Sonoma, Crate & Barrel) but was expected to some time in the future. They're in San Francisco and can't get any professional help to make apps that work?
This is not recommended at this point, but I do look forward to a future version and do hope it eventually meets its promise.
One tip for anyone buying one of these, I was so glad I had the foresight to take pictures during the unboxing so I could put it all back together and fit when I returned it. Video would have been even better.

Thanks for the insightful response and thoughts! I'm also actively testing different quantites of batch brew in my room temp ambient environment to see how long til the brew is borderline lukewarm/unpleasant. I'll be sure to take note of your gripes and test and try to address them!

@@itsxris Cool. Another thing I hated since I didn't have this upstairs right next to a sink was the water tank was way too narrow, and then to make it worse they molded in a grab and lift handle right in the way of where you would want to pour in the water.
My Jura also had a side tank but no need for a grab handle blocking where you can pour the water since the tank lid lifted up and BECAME the handle if you wanted to lift it up and out.

@@JD_Therapy I think that's a good idea, but I'm still looking forward to their next version at some point in the future. I thought this was going to be a Moccamaster killer, but with a carafe that doesn't keep anything hot enough to enjoy the coffee, and more importantly, didn't match (anywhere near) pour over coffee, there's really not much point in the Aiden except as a first effort that might lead to something great in the future.
Also, if you have the glass carafe version of the Moccamaster (I have the KBGV Select) when I want a thermal carafe I use an Alfi Hotello. It's fantastic. It was designed for waiters and the lid is about 1" tall and hollow, and I guess that heats up inside and keeps the inside hot for 90 minutes or so. No glass liner to break. No seal around the top. You pour and the lid hinges open. I use the 1-liter size for a pot of coffee, and the .5 liter size to sit my Kalita Wave filter holder/filter on. It doesn't sit flat, but that doesn't seem to affect the flavor (which the Aiden can't match), and unlike with a glass carafe that is cold by the time I pour my second cup of pour over, the smaller Alfi Hotello keeps it hot and makes sure I didn't go through all that effort to make pour over only to end up dumping it down a sink.
      Highly recommended.

Finally glad someone is focusing on the build, because when I got to see Aiden in person, I was incredibly astonished. It looks cool, was super pumped about it, the lid is also one of my favorite features. Beyond that, I think this build out is horrible and especially for this price. After watching all of the hype, the coffee shows, the Fellow rep talking about his background and the absolute build precision put into this unit, I could not believe the final product. Since the shows and release...nobody except you has discussed the build quality and everyone thinks this brewer is so next level. How can nobody see this? Not a hater here, just really disappointed as I wanted to purchase Aiden as soon as I could, and I like Fellow. In person, I noticed Aiden it is not flush on top of the unit and around some connection points. The carafe does not keep coffee warm. Also, most concerning, if you 'move' or 'press down' on the top of this machine, you can see how flimsy this plastic build out is.

  • @evandux
    @evandux วันที่ผ่านมา +2

Great video! One thing I would be curious to know once you do your full review is how long the coffee stays warm in the carafe after it's been brewed. Would also like to know how well the switch that toggles between batch brew / single brew holds up over time. Looking forward to your full review.

I returned my Aiden after nine days. Fellow promised "for hours" but in reality I and others had issues with the carafe keeping coffee warm for even 20 minutes or so. Fellow did reach out to some people with this issue and asked that they return the carafes so they could investigate the issue. Because of various reasons, I simply decided to return the Aiden and I don't miss it at all.

I know one of the selling points is the batch brew, but how does this stack up against the XBloom Studio for single brews using your own coffee beans? That will most likely be the deciding factor

I have practically every Fellow product in my coffee bar and each one gives me that special magical feeling that only a useful and beautiful object can. I don't think I'd get much use from an automatic dripper though and for some reason the design of the Aiden doesn't trigger fomo for me like their other products do. But, that's likely because I'm obsessed with pour-overs. Thanks for the mini review!

I'm really confused by all the comments about it being plastic. I think we've gotten a little ridiculous with the plastic hate. Sure, plastic *can* be a sign of a cheap product, but it doesn't have to. Also, let's not forget that most drip coffee makers have been made out of plastic for a century, and lots of those held together just fine for decades. We gotta stop this automatic criticism just because a product is made of plastic.

If it works well enough that you'd consider this to be a daily driver for years, if not decades to come, then i'd be willing to part with more for a solid, all-metal construction.
There's something to be said for 'heirloom-quality' pieces such as the Cafelat Robot or Olympia machines that ooze quality and that you can see lasting a lifetime.

I owned one for nine days and felt the expense was due to copper inside and all the sensors (which will cause issue in the future if the tray sensor on my Jura superautomatic is any indicator. I got 16+ years out of the machine, but toward the end it was no longer enough to take a towel and dry off the tray sensor. Sometimes I had to get a hairdryer and heat it up until ALL traces of liquid evaporated.
