  • @DeferFuncClose
    @DeferFuncClose 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +23

This is probably Fellow's best product if you're measuring value for money. I do agree that their products are generally somewhat expensive. I bought the Fellow EKG Pro a while ago and while I agree that it's outrageously expensive, I also love that I can leave it on the counter (because it's beautiful) and easily schedule my water to be at perfect temperature right after I get home from walking the dog.
The Aiden can probably make better pour over coffee than 90% of home coffee enthusiasts. Pour-over is outrageously hard because there are so many factors to consider. Just to start brewing I'm putting my v60 filter + paper into a BPA free IKEA container filled with boiling water so ensure temperature stability. After that, I have to carefully pour water in at the perfect height multiple times throughout the brew. If I wet WDT / swirl a bit too hard, the outcome is going to be different. If I pour a bit too high, the outcome is going to be different.
This thing has perfect temperature stability, custom profiles, sensors that prevent making mistakes, a water boiler, an advanced shower head. If I had to guess the price knowing that the company that built it is Fellow I would certainly not guess that it's below 500 USD.
I have a Cafelat Robot for making espresso because I love the control that it offers me. I feel like I can make perfect espresso with this machine. The moment that I switch to filter coffee with a V60, Aeropress, or french press, I never seem to get a cup that I really am blown away by. I feel like this machine can help me with this. This would also be extremely handy when you have people coming over and need to brew for more people. I could actually ask my local coffee roaster to share the Aiden profile that he configured for his beans and the lotus drops he used for his water and I'd be able to brew amazing coffee without effort. I still enjoy the ritual of making coffee but that's why I still have my manual grinders and the Cafelat Robot. This is effectively a better moccamaster to me.

@@guitar864 the amount of scepticism online is crazy. I'd be more than happy to prove that I'm not a fellow employee just to prove a point.
Sure, I am seeing a lot of positives about this machine but I'm also realistic, the machine can break after the warranty period and then it's up to you to get it fixed.
The thing is, this machine warms and drops water on coffee in a very controlled manner. It includes advanced software to be able to do this and let users customize it to their preferences. Using soft water and descaling now and then should be enough to make this machine last a very long time.
I don't have the machine yet but Fellow has definitely convinced me of its potential.

@@upscalebohemian5372 people generally find it difficult to understand something that it not considered "normal".

I'm using the Aiden and, after a bit of tweaking and a firmware update, have to say it makes good coffee, comparable to my V60 and Wave filter hand pour methods. I like that I can program a brew and have it ready in the morning, which saves me time when I am rushed. Clean up is simple. It's fun to tweak the settings to see if one can get a better cup. I do wish for three things:
    1. not having to swap out the filter buckets
    2. that the filter buckets were made of glass, ceramic or steel if possible, instead of plastic. Can Fellow offer this as an upgrade, I wonder?
    3. a built-in grinder (that may be asking too much, but I bet it's possible)
Another poster questioned the quality control of Fellow products. I am also concerned about that, since the first EKG Kettle with Bluetooth I bought broke down quickly and the replacement one is starting to show erratic behaviour with its thermostat.
For my simple and minimal home use, however, the products (EKG Kettle, Ode Grinder and recently added Aiden) have so far held up. I can see the Aiden as being an important and time-saving part of our daily coffee ritual.

You look at something like Nespresso's Vertuo , which starts at around $150 and change and can go all the way to $600 and change(the Creastista something). This looks like a steal when compared to those. Yes, you cannot do espresso, but then if you are buying this, more likely than not, you already have an espresso workflow setup in your daily routine. This one takes the Aeropress/Hario/Kalita workflow a notch. I would get this mainly for the batch brew option.

I thougt its a disadvantage that you brew coffee with different temperatures (high to lower) in one brew because it slows the extraction throug the brewing process. so thats why a lot of people like james hoffmann recommend to bring your kettle to boil before pooring. so for me it will be interesting to try my brews prepared with a constant temperature for the first time

Threre's a lot I find annoying about the Aiden, but I've only been using it about a week. As for the coffee, when you make a pot it's about the same as the Moccamaster. When you make a small amount with the cone shaped filter it's slightly more "rounded" (slightly less under note of harshness) and brings out a bit more chocolate notes in the same old Sumatra I make all the time. That's about it. The Moccamaster is more convenient to use and has far less to go wrong with it over time. There's no pump in the Moccamaster and the one in the Aiden works constantly so who knows how long it's going to last? The water tank is too thin and the grab handle molded into the side is in the way for pouring water in easily. Some people, me included, have carafes in the Aiden that don't keep the coffee hot at all, maybe 20-30 minutes tops. For some who brought it up, Fellow replaced carafes, but nothing changed. I still pour into a different carafe immediately (same as I do with the Moccamaster, but I don't have to with the Moccamaster, and even after 90 minutes on the hot place in the Moccamaster I don't feel the coffee taste changes much from when I start).
There are a lot of sensors to go wrong over time with Aiden, and the thing I hate the most is if I make coffee and then remove the carafe or open the lid to remove the filter holder to wash it and then replace it, the Aiden acts like I want to make coffee every single time and the menu starts. It' s a pain to have to scroll up to Sleep on the menu again. I feel like saying "No means no!" to it on a daily basis. Super annoying.
While the smaller amounts of coffee made with the cone filter are maybe SLIGHTLY better (as noted above) than in the Moccamaster, there is no way that it actually compares to pour over I make myself with a Stagg Studio Pro and Kalita Wave.

Pour over offers a lot of control, but it is very inconsistent no matter how hard you try. Turbulence, temperature, timing, flow rate and coverage will be different every time you brew, and you simply cannot achieve the same degree of consistency or evenness of extraction across the coffee bed as you're able to with a machine equipped with a carefully designed showerhead, temperature profiling and pulse frequency control.

Plus with the Hario Switch you can use it to make pour over or immersion coffee, if all you want is a pour over and don't want to be bothered with pouring water slowly for several minutes you can get an optional V60 Drip Assist for under $15, simply pour the water into the assist and it will automatically slowly drip the water, but so far it will only fit the 02 size.
Fellow makes great products though, and if a person doesn't mind all the menu selections, and doesn't want to babysit the maker, or someone needs to make several cups of coffee all at once then it's good for a pour over; but it's not good for a cold brew maker because that's not how true cold brewed coffee is made as I mentioned earlier, but that is how to make iced coffee, simply put it on cold brew method, then later pour over ice.

@@NevrNewd Who is the target market? I have a proper kettle, scale, V60, Chemex, Kalita Wave, Aeropress, French press, and a siphon for whatever coffee option I feel like making at any given time. I am guessing that anyone interested in the options the Aiden provides has a routine they enjoy going through to make the coffee in the way they want and don't enjoy cheap plasticky feeling appliances. Anyone looking for the convenience that a machine like this offers is not likely to waste their money when a Breville, Nespresso, even something like a nasty Keurig will get them what the convenience they want at a far lower price point. That, or they will just visit the shop they like the most.
I wish the Aiden good luck; I have a hard time believing it will be a good seller, but happy to be proven wrong if it turns out to be an actually decent machine.

@@MBergyman Well the machine seems more than decent in functionality. Going with plastic is unfortunate. YOu asked target market, i dunno if i'm the target but my wife and I enjoy the espresso process and have and have a Brevelle that we love. However, as much as I love an americano, there are some days I would just want a good pour over coffee and not go to my local store. Also the flexibility to make a full pot when we have company over. The real variable here is we are a high income family who can splurge on something like this. Would I have even thought about it 10 or 15 years ago? Probably not. But just putting in some context there are plenty of people in m position that can justify the cost of less than a year of coffee from my local shop for a versatile brewer.

It it's not for you, fine. Who are you trying to convince, though? I had my reasons for buying it and I don't think for what it is that's a crazy price.

In tangible ways, or did it have to do with your built up expectations? So far the only thing I've been disappointed with with Fellow is their registration process. The Studio Pro kettle and the Tally Pro work very well for my needs. If people are really expecting coffee from this to be equal to or surpass pour over they can do themselves, they will probably be disappointed. It's good, but it's not as good as pour over I make myself.

@@upscalebohemian5372 it’s ascetics over function. Have 2 kettles, for some reason the most difficult kettles I’ve had to remove mineral buildups and both the lids don’t come off and on well at all. Their ceramic tumblers are horrible; even by cleaning them after every use they become incredibly smelly. Their dripper is meh. The double walled glassware I got, one of them chipped within a month.

Bought a Fellow gooseneck kettle. The metal part on the bottom was extremely flimsy and just broke over time.
The original Ode Grinder has a litany of issues e.g. having to force beans down because the container at top is bad. Finish on the cup coming off. Static issues.

IDK what happened to my reply. TLDR, I’ve had 2 kettles, glassware, tumbler, and the dripper. Not impressed with any of them, either due to chips in the glassware, ceramic coating in the tumbler becoming smelly within 2 months of ownership, or the kettles having hard to remove tops and needing more maintenance for cleaning than any other kettle I’ve had previously.

@@MarkPharaoh That's interesting. I haven't had any issues at all with the kettle or Tally Pro scale. I don't own a Fellow Ode because to me it looks like an old-fashioned photography enlarger. :) (I use a Eureka Mignon Brew Pro.)
I returned the Aiden after nine days and felt great about my decision to give up on it and return it the day after I did. A carafe that doesn't keep coffee hot for more than 20 minutes, a machine that keeps turning itself on when you return the carafe after cleaning AND the filter holder after cleaning, AND isn't just press a button but scroll through a menu to his Sleep over and over again daily? That was all just too much.
The Aiden made okay coffee but it never delivered on its promises to make pourover quality coffee, keep the coffee hot "for hours," and so on.
