Hello Brian. My name is Rick & I'm looking to add a lawn maintenance division to the company. I seen your video about rout density & that was my goal. But I want to sign up 500 lawns for the year within a 1 or 2 mile radius & have them all pay for the entire year at once. My question is: can you cut 25 or 30 yards in a day? I'm in FL and these communities are "cookie cutter" yards that are small. How many workers should be in the crew?
How to stripe a lawn buy an eXmark lazer z lol. I go deck edge to deck edge using the full width of the deck. Always have sharp blades and clean deck sometimes I switch out blades 2 times a day after every 5 houses mainly in the spring
I was used to a 48 in deck for a long time, and we got a 62 inch this year, it has taken some getting used to knowing i have 3 inches more of blade on the left side of the mower. The only other tips I have are more terrain related. Up here in the northeast we have a lot of clay and sand and some bumpy uneven lawns. Keeping your machines maintained and tracking straight is one part of keeping stripes straight and clean. The other is being patient and slowing down on bumpy sections and uneven terrain.
Been. Putting grass (push mower) for more than 50 years and never heard of this “tip to tip. I learned to overlap the lines, so you don’t leave grass uncut grass standing in between the lanes. Going to try it. Thanks!
I run a 54 inch zx1 cub cadet... I run a big league lawn roller on the back... Combine it with your tips... My stripes will hurt your eyes they are so bright... Great work man.. I know I'm way late on this but better late then never... Great work sir
I’m a crew foreman, we do it exactly like you do, but I only run a property two ways. Vertical and diagonal. I love the diamond pattern in my properties. It’s to the point the owner is making it a rule that that is how we need to cut all properties! Also, if you constantly run the same line the stripes just burn in and are constantly able to be seen!
I love the tip for not lining up the tire tracks. I started a grounds job back in November with no other experience with mowing other than using a riding mower. Anyways, I got promoted to an athletics field position and the place I work really loves striping the ball fields and I was not good at it. Last week I tried lining up the deck on my tire tracks and my lines are 1000 times better.
Great tip! I was going wheel to wheel, I’m a college kid and I do lawn care during the summer and something we do is before every pass, we pick out something directly ahead of us and don’t look away and some how that makes lines straight because you go straight to it. Your mind just takes over haha, this is after you have it lined up of course
Hey man I am 14 and I have a lawn service with 10 customer it’s my first year… next year I’m getting a rider, think you could explain how short to cut the grass or how long and what times of year I should adjust the height?
Depending on the grass and customer preference if it's feskew then cut at 4-4.5 if it's bermuda 2.25-2.75 honestly just depends on the yard doesn't really matter about one set deck hight
Homeowner in Indiana - I've found that adding a mulch kit helped make my lawn stripes more pronounced without using an actual stripe kit. Love the vids, keep up the great work!
One tip I’ve always lived by since I started in 2003 was I only like to mow 4-4.5 is my fav. Keeps the grass healthy lay down better and keep weeds out. The stripes are harder too!
This was awesome! I just bought a 60" mower fory 2 acres and am really looking forward to trying this when the rain Stops. Nice wide stripes vs the 46 inch wheel To wheel failed attempts. Thanks for the tip!
Up here in Pa most lawns stripe around 4" We cut Valley Forge Historic park a 3.75" to lay stripes. The yards with sod I have to cut @ 4.25" to make it pop.
We use a scag cheetah 2 and we use the outside of the tire. But our goal is to get the edge of the wheel marks to touch ever so slightly. But your stripes look great and your other points are spot on. Great vid!
i stripe somewhere between wheel to wheel and deck to deck. deck to deck worked great with my walk behinds, but it's easier to judge and keep long stripes more straight using the front wheels as gauges on the previous stripe. oh, and don't forget the contribution of high lift blades to the stripe game 😎
most of them time in order to stripe you need a stripe kit and something dragging the grass in order have the grass reflect sunlight. also I would say the way you mow should point the stripes towards the house or towards whatever view you want people to see it at. mowing the grass at the right height is equally as huge too...
Thank you I just bought my first zero turn coming from Toro 30" push using a checkmate striper and my zero turn was not laying very good stripes. Today I tried tip to tip and it's awesome. Stripes are deep and dark in Michigan tall fescue..
Homeowner here... Good info, thanks for sharing. I have a zero turn pro cub cadet, 48 inch "Tank". I have to scrap my deck after every mowing, hate that part. Also, without a clipping catcher, I am "forced" to mow around the house, to blow clippings away on a constant basis to achieve a clean look. Are you using a mulcher on your system? Any other suggestions?
Also the stripes show up better when you cut east to west then if you cut north to south because of the way the sun rises and falls , of course you gotta change it up every time but for the photo shot it will show up best east to west , also in the morning time it’s more defined looking into the west and in the evening it will be more defined looking into the east if that’s the way you cut it
I cut same way you do bud. 3 point turns and using ecery inch of the cutting deck to lay those perfect strips. Im in central ontario canada. I think thats how all the pros do it!
Commenting on an old video because I just discovered Brian's channel. I'm also in Michigan (near southeast border) and have a Toro Timecutter 54 as a home zero-turn mower to cut about an acre of property. I have always cut lawn (push and rider) with lining up the left front wheel to be just on the outside of the uncut grass. So, I'm trying to figure out what front visual guide I'll be able to use if I'm trying to go "tip to tip" as Brian and many of you are suggesting. If my left front wheel is going to be somewhere in the uncut grass away from the cut line, I'm probably not going to be too consistent in my cutting line. Maybe I'm over-thinking this, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to need some type of visual guide at the front of the mower to keep me consistent. Many of you have referenced using the deck wheels, but that is more to the side than front. Any additional insight for a non-commercial and older guy would be appreciated!
Great video Brian, just finished my first year in Lawn care. I wanted to see if you have advice on how I can make my turn tire tracks disappear. I see some laying stripes but I can't see where they left the turn marks.
I'd recommend trying to alternate between a few different turn spots every other cut or so. You can make up the difference with your trimmer. This will reduce rutting as well.
Last fall I commented. This spring, I have been striping like a madman on my 60 inch cub cadet ultima zt3 60. Absolutely the best striping advice ever! Thanks. No stripe kit required.... Just outside the anti scalp wheel gets it perfect.
Hi, I’m 11 and I was wondering if you could do a video on how to install trimmer racks, I’ve been looking and I still can’t find it.Thank you I love you channel
Great tips! Minimal deck gap and a roller kit. The gap between the bottom edge of the deck and the grass creates a draft /vacuum, and pulls the grass vertically. It's kind of design specific tho. Combine that with a roller and healthy grass, and you have a baseball field look.
Oklahoma. This is June 26 and it will be 100 and humid. Our conditions and grass dictate our ability to stripe. In our grass you have to let it grow a bit. I'll cut the entire grass a bit longer than the 3 inch then drop the blade to 3 " and stripe it. It works for me but I have my own small lawn. I've seen, and tried, the brush trick. Great till the sun moves and then the grass moves too.
Jesus christ cutting at 3" I guess my properties suck we can never really go below 3.75 if we're lucky, last week we were cutting at 4.25 and still leaving clumps and shit and having to double cut
Yes, except I dance while I'm laying the stripes on my stand on and you can't because you use a sit down 😂 ha great job dude you're a killer, hope to meet you someday.
That's exactly right I usually tell the new guy a good rule of thumb is the wheel on the deck need to touch the uncut grass until they get a hang of it not the mower wheel
I mow commercial properties, schools, banks, gas stations and apartments.. on the bigger properties for speed reasons i line up left deck wheel and inside right front tire.. mowing 2+ acre fields it can get a bit tedious and time is money.. smaller properties most definitely tip to tip..
I do my stripes that same way! I always say the first pass you make, will make or break you. What I mean by that is if your first pass is not straight then the rest of the yard will be crooked. I always make sure to look at an object such as a tree or a flag pole and try to make my first pass as straight as I can and then from there blade tip to blade tip stripping and you’ll have customers for life!
If you have a decent lawn you can mow it 4 different ways at a different time on the same day each week. Make your first pass in the direction of the sun. You're stripes will shine 4 different ways through out the day. It just takes a few weeks to train the grass the way you want it. Try it out.
A floor jack & jack stands . Put the floor jack under the deck , chalk the back wheel , jack it up from front middle of the deck, put jack stand under the front casters get a paint scraper and get down on the ground & scrape away
I use the deck wheels because the tip usually ends up being the same as the outside of the wheel on mine. Bought a new to me ferris 61 so I'll have to recalibrate that lol

I have been through two zero turns in the past 6 years. Both of them cut horribly (badboy and club cadet) Whats a great residential zero that has a good fabricated deck?
I have a exmark mower. I put a solid 6 pipe on the back of it to help stripe. Grass is Kentucky blue grass I cut it at 4 1/2 inches. Blade tip to blade tip I will try this weekend. Great advise. Would like to send you pics or video. Frustrating!!!!!!!
I saw you set your mower to 3 to 3.25 in height to cut the lawn. So how tall should the grass be without it clumping up. I clean my deck every time I cut my lawn. Just tired of it clumping up. I raise the deck also to keep it from clumping up. Do you keep your grass deflector all the way up or down? Why is my grass clumping?
I run my lines just like you except t run my scalp wheel to scalp wheel as a template I get really good lines. My diamonds come out perfect as well. Just purchased a Gravley 60 inch top finish the season with until my 61 cheetah and 72 turf tiger get repaired. I also have a 61 scag diesel mower for sale of any lawn techs are interested. They're about 19000 brand new I'll make a great deal to a serious buyer. Was looking for tips operating the gravely is totally differentfrom my scag mowers.
I understand clean in the underside of the carriage will make the grass stand up higher. However, how do you clean the underside of the mower deck? Not everyone has a lift to get under it.
Biggest thing more than anything is having green grass with little weeds and a good grass type. There's a lot of other contributing factors but thosr are the main things, just about every mower will stripe.
Do you guys mow the way we do to get those beautiful stripes? Or do you have a different technique?!
Lmk down below! 😎👇

how do you make brown grass stripe ? I'm thinking the green antifreeze and some
sort of sprayer
I can stripe now after watching your video. Now just practice practice practice
Also check for adequate deck pitch. Super Z's are factory instructed to be 1/2". Helps to increase back to front air flow.

Brian, good video. Homeowner here with 52 inch stand on Ferris. What’s the easiest/safest way to scrape underneath?
A floor jack & jack stands . Put the floor jack under the deck , chalk the back wheel , jack it up from front middle of the deck, put jack stand under the front casters get a paint scraper and get down on the ground & scrape away
Should grass be a certain height and at what starting point do you mow middle or from side?
We mow 3-3.25”. Usually the higher you cut the better the stripes (4”)
What about the little wheel on the deck? Thats what i use
