Ian Hislop is a political journalist. He was the youngest ever editor of Private Eye and has been doing the job for 35 years. He's also the most sued man in Britain. Private Eye also played a part in exposing the biggest miscarriages of justice in British legal history, The Post Office Scandal. And has been team captain on a comedy news panel show Have I Got News For You since 1990. He's also Oxford educated.

@@ChrisStewart-mn5wm not at all.. Ian Hislop is a smart, funny and vocally erudite person.
I usually find Ricky's 'Office inspired' version of comedy is vastly overrated, but when he is acting without trying to be that deadpan unfunny twat, I don't dislike him or his other comedic developments,..
...I also dislike Steve Coogan's generally similar style of humour too, but we each all have some things we prefer not to watch versus something differenly yet similar.

I caught the first series of The Office by accident and was taken in, briefly, and thought it was a ‘Fly on the Wall’ programme. It was excruciatingly embarrassing. Watched with my hands half over my eyes. Then I realised.
By the way, Ian Hislop is the editor of Private Eye, an independent fortnightly news magazine. He is totally impartial with no political allegiance. His aim is to expose every form of corruption, malfeasance and bent politicians and any persons in power. He’s been doing this for about 30 years and is respected by the good and feared by the bad.

The Office is genius but I've never watched much of it because I just find it too cringey and depressing. Ricky is a legend though. And Ian Hislop is alright but come on he's not the bloody messiah. I feel like you're over-selling him a bit. He can't be doing such a great job of exposing corruption etc if they still let him on the BBC. He mildly hints at it, that's about all.

Ian Hislop has been a recognisable face of the UK political comedy scene for far longer than Ricky Gervais has. Hislop became the editor of Private Eye, a satirical magazine started by Peter Cook (famously the comedic partner of Dudley Moore) since 1986 and he’s been a team captain on the BBC’s long running satirical news show Have I Got News For You, since it started in 1990.
You maybe missed what Hislop said said in the interview but he essentially was saying that the material for Gervais’s first live show was disappointing in comparison to the likes of The Office. It wasn’t a general criticism of Gervais’s talent but a specific to that particular live show…and in general (if I recall correctly) stand up Ricky wasn’t as well received (initially anyway) as sitcom Ricky. Personally, I much prefer his sitcoms and films (I absolutely live Cemetery Junction) to what I’ve seen of his stand up but I don’t expect anyone to agree with me. But I can be pretty sure that Ian Hislop won’t be jealous of Ricky Gervais’s careen and is most likely quite happy with his career as a journalist, political satirist and political commentator…though I think he might want to give up on the sideline of being sued by people taking umbrage with what he’s printed in Private Eye.

The Ricky Gervais Show podcasts were some of the funniest things I've ever listened to. When they adapted them into the animated TV series, the visual cartoon gags just added a further layer to the comedy that had me in absolute stitches - I strongly recommended you check them out if you haven't already, JJ! Karl's Diary was pure fried comedy gold.
PS - really enjoying your reaction videos, sir - keep up the good work!

JJ, Ian Hislop probably wasn't jealous. He's been making about 50k per episode of his TV show for a couple of decades.
Also, Hislop is kind of one of the good guys. He's the editor of a satirical journalism magazine that's done quite a lot of important stuff.

Ian hislop is editor of one of the most respected political satire magazines in the world, has been a team captain on have I got news for you. (News based comedy show)for over 20 years and has been sued god knows how many times by political figures and so on because he is fearless and says what he thinks about public figures without worrying over reprisals. Even Jon Stewart is an Ian hislop fan boy. In Short he has earned more respect in intelligent circles than Ricky by a wide margin. He is not a stand up comic but his views are valid nonetheless as he has been

Ricky's work has sadly had diminishing returns as it went on. The Office is fantastic and genuinely ground breaking. Extras was good. Everything after that is poor and/or banal. It's really sad and becomes increasingly clear that Stephen Merchant's input has gone under the radar for many.

People always say The office started the mockumentary sitcom but forget "Operation good guys" came out a year or so before. It was shit in the sane style but followed police training. It was pretty good! From memory lasted about 3 series. I remember when the office came on thinking "oh they're doing a show like operation good guys". It wasn't as popular, but it was the first UK comedy series to be shot like that. Love the Office and Ricky though!
