    Thanks for the informative video. Just my observation and not a criticism, but isn't all the load from the turbine on the PMA/PMG. I would have thought that the lateral and downward force would severely reduce the life of it.

      @LittleshopintexasSV  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That was one of my concerns as well. But both of these alternators use the same bearing found in automotive alternators and the Freedom PMA uses one in both front and back of the body. If they can handle heat from an engine and tension from a belt for thousands of hours of operation, they can handle a twelve pound turbine siting on top of them. Of course I might not believe that is true without testing that myself. I've been using a Freedom and Freedom II for my experiments for six years and counting with no bearing issues so far.
      They're not bad units.

    Could you explain why a roof turbine ventilator would need to turn a generator? Why not put the magnets on the turbine hood and the coil around the base? Agreed it would be rather low voltage but in Louisiana it wasn't uncommon for there to be three or more of them on a garage/workshop roof.

    HOA's are impossible to deal with. That is why I never bought a home where I had to deal with them. I have a deed with no covenants or restrictions on it. No HOA for miles around me. It took two years to find what I wanted, a house with acreage on a tall hill. No flood problems, no nosey neighbors that will tell me what I can or cannot do on my land, and outside the city limits of any City. I have many Amateur Radio antennas, a rental spot for Caravans, a tree farm, and a future wind turbine to run the radios seperate from the mains on rechargeable batteries. I also restore old trucks of any kind. Truck parts are under cover in a pole barn (which no HOA would ever allow). If you approve of an HOA, you are certifiable communist crazy.

      Excellent, sounds like a little piece of heaven. I'd never buy a property in an HOA either.
      Unfortunately the municipality I live and work in, is trying to run itself like an HOA.

And since I had to watch this video over and over and over again during the editing process I added music just so I wouldn't drive myself crazy. The music I had to choose from came from the (very limited at the time) TH-cam audio library. And this was one of my earliest videos and shows my lack of editing experience. Hopefully I've struck a better balance in my later audio/visual work.

    I would not mount the turbine on the generator. I would put a pulley or gear and chained on turbine shaft to turn the generator. By sizing the gears correctly you could increase RPMs on generator shaft.

    • @LittleshopintexasSV
      @LittleshopintexasSV  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds good. Show me... Keep in mind by adding resistance, more torque is required to turn the generator shaft. Also keep in mind, a generator under a load requires more torque to turn it in the first place. To create more torque requires higher wind speed or more blade surface. I'm not saying it can't be done. In fact, I'm in the process of redesigning the blades to create more torque for that reason. You may see it in an upcoming video.

    Hi, very impressed with your manufacturing and design, so somewhat surprised when you used wire to hold the vanes equally spaced. Much easier and better surely to use some of the aluminium offcuts to make 25mm (or similar) wide spacers, which would do the job better than the wire, and much easier to fit..?

    • @williamjohnston3770

      Will, while it would have been easier and possibly stronger it would have created more drag (resistance) and adversely affected the aerodynamics to a greater degree.

    I noticed the new MWS pmg is a 48V but your multimeter set at DC volts never got above 25V when windy. So, this setup will never charge your battery just not enough rpm

    • @LittleshopintexasSV
      @LittleshopintexasSV  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are a lot of variables to consider; Top wind speed for that day was around 8 MPH; A VAWT will never achieved the same high RPM of a HAWT; And different PMA/PMG are capable of different outputs. On the other hand, it's not a problem if your running a twelve volt system.

    2:18 - "It doesn't take much effort to turn it" - but you're not driving any load. Try short-circuiti9ng the output wires, then try turning it by hand.

    • @LittleshopintexasSV
      @LittleshopintexasSV  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Many people had said that the cogging of this brand of PMA was so bad that it would prevent the blades from turning in low wind. I just tried it to discover the truth.
      And to short all the wires together creates a braking effect which some systems use to protect the generator in high wind. That does *not* represent a generator under load.

    Have you considered the RV market? The turbine would need to be a smaller diameter- my RV is 11' 1" total height (this is to the top of the AC- the highest point on the RV). What I'm thinking is an 18" turbine (11' 1" + 18" = 12' 9") positioned to turn while traveling down the road with a swing arm that would bring the turbine from horizontal to vertical while parked. I do not have the height of the AC on my RV at hand, so the turbine mounted on the roof could actually be a little larger than the 18" originally suggested, but this market is wide open for alternative power. People are putting in larger and larger battery banks to store the few hours of solar, when your turbines would run 24/7 with less weight than the battery banks. And for those already invested in solar, your turbines take up so little roof space, they could be added and supplement the solar (really out-perform the solar). Consider batteries at full charge with inverters to run TV, microwaves, coffee pots, toasters, whatever the weather- rain or shine. Just a lot of possibilities...

    This may be off topic, but someone might find it interesting.
    Over unity electric generator. By AMA.
    Segment 1: 1 motor with bar connected to it standing vertically. Circular disc connected to bar that has magnets embedded in it surrounded in high permeability material to focus magnets outward pushing force in an upwards direction from top of disc.
    Segment 2: Hollowed out cylindrical Bar of material horizontally positioned.
    Flat hollowed out ring shaped material with openings around its outer top flat edge.
    Magnets surrounded in high permeability material embedded in these openings.
    Magnets positioned in openings around ring are in at least 1 of 2 configurations either all N magnetic field pushing out or N,S,N,S all around it. Just depends on whether your going for Piston structure or spinning structure explained below & whether you want it to be DC or AC current.
    Place these all along the cylindrical bar connected to it solidly, except at far ends of bar.
    At both ends of bar place ring of material that can be magnetically repelled in specific locations. (magnetically repelled in specific location is in reference to outside of ring area that faces away from center of bar)(Other side of same ring facing in towards center of bar is capable of being magnetically repelled all around) Ring must be connected solidly to bar. points of repulsion on these rings is off set from each other on each end of bar.
    3 Hollow ring structures with small square bars protruding from each. Ring structure has all magnetic repulsion on inside of ring shape & can rap around the main bar so that the bar wont be causing friction on things as it moves back and forth or spins. 1st positioned around far left of bar, 2nd position at center of bar (be sure to leave enough room for magnetic structures to be able to move back and forth without hitting it) & 3rd positioned on far right of bar.
    Tube structure is constructed in two parts that fit together on top of each other length wise over main structure.
    Tube structure has 3 square openings for the bars that the Ring structures that are connected around the main bar keeping it from causing friction on structure, to slide into.
    This tube structure is designed with material that does not block magnetic fields. Perhaps some type of transparent material glass or other.
    At both ends of the tube structure there is a built in circular groove that will house a round disc. The ceiling/floor/left side/& right side of groove has openings for small magnets to be embedded in it, so that the pushing force from magnets is pushing in towards the edge of disc that goes in this spot. There is also 4 openings located on the top, bottom, left & right positions of the open groove. Small magnets are placed in these spots so when round disc is in position these magnetic fields will hit sideways keeping it from generating friction against structure.
    Far Ends of bar has Cap structure that screws over tube halves holding them together. Cap structure also has 4 points on inside top, bottom, left & right that have openings. These openings have small embedded magnets in them that exert there pushing force outwards (sideways) so it will keep disc in position, generating no friction against structure. Cap is made of material like tube so it does not block magnetic fields. (Note: These magnets in groove and cap structure are only needed for piston design. If Disc is directly connected to main bar so as it spins the bar spins, magnets are not needed here).
    The disc has ring around it (ring of material goes around outer edge and folds over front side & backside a small distance) that is repelled by magnetic fields so the 12 small magnets will keep it lined up but it will be able to spin without causing friction on structure. The disc has openings on it's flat side that face inside of tube and magnets surrounded in high permeability material are embedded in this disc.
    The disc has small bar that is connected to it's center that goes all the way to the other end of bar structure through the center of the hollowed out bar and connects to disc on other end. Disc on other end is set up the same but magnets embedded in it are off set in comparison. As first disc spins the magnetic fields will push against specific spot on disc connected directly to bar, pushing bar in other direction, once bar is fully pushed over, further spinning of disc will then align the other sides magnet to push it back.
    Tube structure also has half moon shaped protrusion on inside and on both halves so when tube is connected they line up to make a full ring shape on inside of tube, these half moon shaped protrusions have at least 1 small round opening on it's side in middle of curve that faces away from center of bar. The opening has a small magnet embedded in it so magnetic force is repelling out sideways away from center of bar. The protruding ring is positioned to line up slightly further in towards center of bar then the ring of magnetically repelled material connected directly to bar. This way when bar moves right or left it is magnetically stopped after a short distance.
    Copper coil setup: Copper coils are wound in at least 1 of 2 ways. Either coiled in circles next to each other (Like if you wound coils around a cylindrical bar) or laid out in a row as if wire was on flat table going up then bent to go down & back up until it formed a flat rectangle of wire bending up and down and then the entire structure folded around tube. Copper windings are then lined up perpendicular to magnetic fields on outside of tube. Ends of copper coils are connected into separate construct that will allow electrical current to flow somewhere else.
    Circular construct is built like a stand that goes around the outside of motor segment. Circular construct has flat ring of high permeability (magnetic field shielding) material that has small openings that will allow magnetic fields through specific locations. Top of circular construct has groove to allow the horizontal bar to balance on. Circular construct can also be placed on other end of bar so it is balanced. The motor segment is positioned so the disc connected to the bar that is connected to the motor is lined up so the disc passes under the horizontal bars disc that is at end of horizontal bar. The high permeability material keeps the magnetic fields in disc from hitting into the disc that spins or pushes the horizontal bar until just the right moment when the impact will cause the disc in horizontal bar to spin which will perpetuate the piston motion in the horizontal bar. More horizontal bars of the same design are built and positioned around the motor segment in a circular horizontal fashion all the way around. The bar connected to the motor can be increased in length to desired height (As much as motor can handle) and more of the exact same setup is repeated higher and higher up, maximizing the over unity potential of the construct to ridiculous proportions. :D Current from the horizontal bars is diverted to power the motor as needed and all other current is diverted to power my game console or the world. :) Interesting variation to this design would be to connect the spinning discs on far ends of horizontal bar to main bar that magnets are connected to so the magnets spin instead of getting pistoned back and forth. So long as moving magnetic fields are perpendicular to copper wires it should work. By AMA

    All your trouble with threads and shaft sizes and a mix of metric and imperial, why in the hell doesn't America just ditch imperial altogether and go metric? That would solve all your problems.
    Even little Australia has been metric since the mid 1960s. People here adapted within a couple of years after they finally admitted it was so much easier!
    Some of the old guys complained but I used to tell them to throw away all their tape measures with feet and inches because they were trying to convert from one to the other all the time. It's not hard to learn the approximate size of a metre, or a centimetre, or a millimetre.

    Very nice, your turbine is ecstatically pleasing and makes electricity, win win. Did the alternator act as a wind brake at about 21 volts? Have you tried a vane, to shield half the turbine so it doesn't push with the reverse of the paddles? I am considering a build for us, as we live off grid entirely, any electricity is a plus enjoyed and subscribed

    • @LittleshopintexasSV
      @LittleshopintexasSV  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      At 21 volts? All I can say is any load adds resistance and will slow the RPM of the turbine, but since my system is twelve volts all I need is 14 volts to charge my batteries. When I built the first small model, I built a shield that would spin around to point into the wind just like a horizontal wind turbine does. But in turbulent wind the shield always had to move into position before the turbine could spin. If the majority of the wind in your area comes from one direction a shield might be practical. But in my area, when I get wind it can be crazy turbulent and change direction constantly. And it's in that turbulent wind that a VAWT has the advantage over a horizontal wind turbine.

      Thank you for your response. Here the wind is all over the map and low speed, (mostly) The vane I saw on I think it was tesla, is part of the whole deal and the generator is mounted in it, In NW Montana we don't get enough wind or sun to do a good job but combined?? Your videos have me interested in wind again East and Central Montana have commercial wind farms but here alternative energy is just not being used, We try as do a few others but cost to production is not favorable, Power company quoted 96K to bring us a monthly bill of about $100. on an already to tight 700 a month budget. Don't see that happening! Thank you again for your inspiring videos

      You and I have a very similar budget. The last several years of running my newsstand our average combined income for my wife and I has been around $12,000 a year. After we pay $3000 in property taxes our annual budget in around $9000. Taxes are hard enough to manage on a budget, but keeping the air conditioners running through the warmer months in Texas can be just as bad. It's that reason that I started experimenting with this vertical wind turbine design.

This would block the wind striking the upwind rotation and give all the power into the downwind part of the vanes. Just a for what is worth suggestion. Nice work with this video.

    • @LittleshopintexasSV
      @LittleshopintexasSV  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I played with this idea on my original small scale model that I tinkered with on my desk at work. The deflector had a tail that was guided by the wind much like your standard horizontal wind turbine. The tail aloud the deflector to rotate around the turbine depending on what direction the wind was coming from. The issue with using that idea with this turbine is; to support the deflector in high wind, it needs to be mounted both below and above the center line it rotates around. But there's no center shaft on top that it can be mounted to. I have another design in-mind that includes a deflector. I just have to wait until I have the money to try it.

    • @LittleshopintexasSV
      @LittleshopintexasSV  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I have not yet been able to buy enough materials to workout any wholesale deals with a supplier, so the cost of materials runs close to five hundred dollars for each turbine. That's not including the PMA! It may not look like it but there are a lot of parts to this turbine. As far as bad weather stability goes, a hailstorm with large hail might beat them to pieces. But no thunderstorm has caused any damage to them since 2014 when these were built.

    • @LittleshopintexasSV
      @LittleshopintexasSV  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! But you have a similar pressure on an alternator shaft in your car. When a serpentine belt (one belt) wraps though and around; crank shaft, water pump, smog pump, air conditioner, and alternator. And it has to be tight enough to drive your air conditioner without squealing, thats a lot of pressure as well. Good bearings in both front and back of the body will make a difference in the life of that alternator.

      @@LittleshopintexasSV Depends entirely on the kWh rating of the batteries.

    • @LittleshopintexasSV
      @LittleshopintexasSV  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@richysee The turbine power output depends on wind speed and the output capability of the PMA/PMG that the turbine is driving. In this video I was comparing the WindBlue PMA against the Freedom PMA. The WindBlue probably was about 80 watts at 100 RPM. The Freedom puts out about 160 watts at 100 RPM and the Freedom II (a different video) puts out about 300 watts at 100 RPM. Now, depending on the the load being drawn which causes resistance, 100 RPM happens in winds speeds between 8 - 10 MPH.
      I would never claim this turbine will run a house, but it will charge batteries.

    Man no disrespect but man that’s light duty, it sure is a start, one major problem I see with there design using for a vault is the stator is open to the weather. Also with the amount of blades, your RPM will suffer for sure. I’m going to check back after your up for a couple of years.

      I designed this for my area. Maximum height allowed without a permit is forty feet. Which is the average height of trees in my area. We also get the occasional tornado and quite often get hit with 80 mph wind. There are no other wind turbines in use within miles of me for these reasons. And yes top rpm is lower with twelve blades but it produces 14 volts in a six mph breeze which is all I need for my 12 volt batteries.
      I'd also like to point out, I uploaded this video a few years ago and there had been one of these on my shop roof for few years until a storm threw a canopy at it. I have since repaired, repainted and put it in a higher place.

      I see I live in the sticks. My closest neibor is 1/4 mile away.

      It must be nice. I miss the fresh air, starry nights and the quiet life in the country. Well, maybe not always quiet but you know what I mean.

      Yes very quiet except for harvest time, Semi’s everywhere. Most of the year all I here is the wind through the trees and cattle mooing, My big Horn sheep asking for food all the time, even when they already have all they can eat. Winter is even quieter.

    Buddy, what type of alternator you used, we are having problems in selection of alternator...and you didn't use gearbox..??

      In this video I compared a WindBlue low wind PMA to a Missouri Wind & Solar Freedom PMA. The WindBlue uses an automotive alternator body and the MWS Freedom uses their own cast aluminum body. Both use neodymium magnets instead of the electro magnets of a standard alternator. Both use 17mm stainless steel shafts.

    The magnet assembly that had the magnetic shaft might be a good candidate for magnetically levitated bearings. No physical contact so no resistance which would increase efficency I beleive. Just a suggestion.

      That's something I thought about, but I prefer to do it this way.

    I would just make a top and bottom and screw the wings on . just need a cutter to make a bunch of wings and tops. and shafts to alternators wonder if you could put two on one pole?

    I'll take 1 how much? excellent craftsmanship way better than store bought. could you make one to set horizontally on a shed roof?
