The China "debt trap" narrative has been debunked by the British Debt Justice and World Bank data. They found that African countries owe 3x more to Western banks, asset managers and oil traders than to China, and are charged double the interest. 12% of Africa's external debt was owed to China lenders, compared to 35% to Western private creditors.
China has since cancelled the debt for 17 African nations.

Love how SCMP don't mention that the Sri Lankan debt was mostly owe to Japan, US.
The idea was for them to take out another IMF loan with harsh conditions, while the US takes the port, plus more... However the PRS did the opposite and loaned it to China instead to circumvent taking the 'loan', which was NOT what the US/IMF wanted.

    • @carlabroderick5508

There was absolutely never a plan for US to “take” the port. If a country agrees, US may use the port. It would never be “owned” by US.

Some facts about China's 🇨🇳 Belt and Road Initiative:
    - As of January 2023, 151 countries were signed up to the BRI.
    - Sri Lanka was cited most frequently as an example of China's "debt-trap" diplomacy but, Chinese loan to Sri Lanka is only 10% of its overall debt
    - At least Chinese loans to Sri Lanka can be seen in the ports, highways, airports, powerplants etc. Projects that would only see returns decades from now. Where were the 90% loans Sri Lanka incurred from the World Bank🇺🇸, IMF🇺🇸, Asian Development Bank🇯🇵 went to?

This is what you won't hear mentioned in the US. Those nations involved in the BRI, were tickled pink when BRICS came online over there. Back by gold. Those nations now are developing at a fast rate so the any fixed rate is only going to mean they progress faster. If your economy of your country is growing, how is the big default going to happen? China set it up so the currency is solid, backed by gold, took the hit early for investing in building in all these nations, knowing one day, it's BRICS vs the central banking system. Game Over. When you don't invest a terrible thing happens, nothing.

    - World Bank have estimated that BRI can boost trade flows in 149 participating countries by 47%, as well as cutting the cost of global trade by 31% to 48% percent, and grow the GDP of Asian, African and Latin American developing countries by an average of 2.6 to 3.9% annually

I am not in the camp of people who see the BRI as a 'debt trap'. But that does not mean BRI has been a success. Rather, it is my feeling that many recipients of BRI loans/projects have thought "Let's get the money now, then we'll worry about how to pay them back some other day". But that also means that Chinese creditors (esp. China Exim Bank) have perhaps not always done their due diligence. Some of these loans seem a bit risky.
In my opinion, the failure of the Sri Lanka Hambantota Port can be laid squarely on the shoulders of former president Mahinda Rajapaksa, perhaps the most corrupt president ever. He is the one who decided to make a large port in Hambantota, a small town with no industry to speak of. The port was not needed, not in the right place, and not particularly useful, but it did happen to be in Mahinda Rajapaksa's small hometown. There are accusations within Sri Lanka that during his presidency, Mahinda Rajapaksa managed to defraud the country of more than $5 billion and funnel it out of the country. Many officials of his administration are being investigated for graft, fraud and corruption.

    * In the autumn of 2020, China poured in humanitarian aids to Afghanistan to help Afghans weather the coming winter.
    Comparison 5:
    * On 3 Jan 2020, General Qasem Soleimani of Iran, was killed in a drone strike by America, while heading to Baghdad in order to engage in diplomatic discussions aimed to reduce hostility between Iran and Saudi.
    * On 10th Mar 2023, brokered by China, long time rivals Saudi and Iran reestablished diplomatic ties, marking a new beginning of the two biggest Shia and Sunni countries, bringing peace to the Middle East.
    Comparison 6:
    * Laos holds a world record: the most bombed country in the world. 7.7 million tons of explosives were dropped in Laos, by more than 580,000 air missions by the US Airforce on Laos between 1964 and 1973 during the Vietnam War. That’s more than three times the amount of bombs dropped in all theaters of World War II. There are still 80 million bomblets that never went off remain live, buried over 35% of land area of Laos. A staggering 270 million bomblets were dropped in a country with a population of 2.5 million, to carpet a huge buffer zone to prevent weaponries to reach Vietnam. By 1975, 1/10th of Laos population was killed, 1/5th of the population wounded.
    * Today Laos has a high speed rail system more advanced than American’s, built by China after removing the unexploded bomblets.
    >> Laos, Syria, Afghanistan, where America destroyed, China goes to build.
    Comparison 7:
After the Sudan war broke out,
    * The US picked up its embassy personnel using helicopters and left other 15,000 US citizens behind, in a war fermented by neocons like Victoria Nuland.
    * China sent two warships to take ALL its citizens, 940 Chinese, and 231 foreigners out of Sudan to safety at Jeddah port. And the Chinese embassy staff left last.

But at least China is trying to lift up these regions and at the same time get ready for the ride towards a better life and economic prospects for these region its very similar to venture capital strategy more baskets u have chances of better unicorns u can help nurture.

Some facts about China's 🇨🇳 Belt and Road Initiative:
    - As of January 2023, 151 countries were signed up to the BRI.
    - The idea of BRI as a debt trap diplomacy was first created by an Indian 🇮🇳 think tank, coined by Indian🐂 academic Brahma🙋🏿‍♂️ Chellaney in 2017 to describe what he called China's "predatory lending practices", which "overwhelm poor countries with unsustainable loans and force them to cede strategic leverage to China".
    - The irony is, India 🇮🇳 is a member of China's Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank AIIB, which makes India technically a full member of China's BRI in all but name. Receiving tens of billions worth of infrastructure funding in India from this bank alone.
    - Indians say this, do that.
Everyone knows, including stray cows 🐄 roaming freely on Indian streets

Belt and road projects is a positive construction beneficial to the countries which participating. But what China fail to understand is these countries does not have the Chinese mentality in terms of economic visionary. For the Chinese, when they build something even how small there is , the Chinese people would be rushing to utilized the "small convenience" to make a lifetime improvement for themselves. Meanwhile for non Chinese countries they are still scratching their heads thinking why a big modern sea port facilities build in front of them even the facility completed 1 year earlier. The pace of thinking comparing to Chinese are hundreds of times slower. The Chinese meanwhile would deliver what they had committed and the repayment of debt starts. Much of the slower pace countries could not generate a substantial amount of income to pay the debt and fell on what they called as debt trap.
