  • The west historically have been dominating the global economy. With the rise of China and Asia, how would the world change with the new center of economy being a non Western and European focus.
Danny Quah is Professor of Economics and International Development at the London School of Economics and Political Science, and Director of the Southeast Asia Centre at LSE’s new Institute of Global Affairs. He had previously served as LSE’s Head of Department for Economics and Council Member on Malaysia’s National Economic Advisory Council.
Quah is Tan Chin Tuan Visiting Professor at the National University of Singapore, and lectures regularly at Peking University. He studied at Princeton, Minnesota, and Harvard, and was Assistant Professor in the Economics Department at MIT before joining LSE.
Quah gave the third LSE-NUS lecture in 2013, a TEDxLSE lecture in 2012, and the Inaugural LSE Big Questions Lecture in 2011. His current research focuses on the shifting global economy and the rise of the east.

The whole problem is that any group thinks it is the one who should "run the world". No matter how many are in a group, you only get to " run" yourselves. No matter what part of the world you are in, the people who live there should run that part of the world and only that part, it is no one groups job to decide how the rest of the world should be.

Because man gets corrupted with power over others. We knew man would try this one last time. 1/3 will die according to ancients. We just don't learn. Nothing new under the sun

This talk is full of many "inconvenient truths" for us "Westerners" yet at the same time a remarkably transparent reading on the ambitions of the Chinese Communist Party. What is so frightening is how thoroughly convinced the professor is of his convictions that democracy is a sham. And to those who have an appreciation for the ironies of history, how closely this agenda echoes that of Japanese imperialist theory of the 1920's and 30's. And of course delivered in Kuala Lumpur. How did that work out for you in the 1940's professor? Too bad you can't ask your great grandfather because he'd set you straight.

I love how free market capitalism means the government subsidizing the mortgage market. Free markets were first blamed for discriminating against low income borrowers so the government subsidized the sub prime market only to watch it collapse. Then they blame banks for preying on the people the banks were previously accused of discriminating against. The government, not the free market, failed.

Mike; Since those with the Money control the "Governments", their Non-Free "Market" is not going to help most people much at all. The System works like Evolution in Reverse : it rewards thieves and swindlers, whether in government OR "Business".

Clearly democracy is not the only way. It is just the way most people want. But establishing a working democracy and maintaining it is a complicated business. It tends to look a lot like herding cats. This is because each of us thinks we know more than the next person how to proceed. We must all learn what Oliver Cromwell saw, when he said, “ In the bowels of Christ, think ye not that ye could be wrong?” Disregarding the Christian terminology, we must learn how to protect and help the poor and weak to be respected as human beings. In other words, focus on kindness, not on ego.

But those are not the only options. What the world needs now is not liberal democracy but social democracy, a system which is built upon the building of strong local communities of people who create the liberating structures. No top-down strategy is this ,but a bottom-up strategy that brings peoples' needs into the same sphere as their abilities and finds solutions for the differences.

In global economy people now are understanding the back logs. By giving work to much skilled foreign labor what will happen to native ones? Unemployment. Over population and lots of other issues are major concerns too and now covid-19. Globalization is not bad per se. If globalization is limited till exchange of technology and investments rather than labor.

I partly agree with him. I come from India , the worlds largest democracy and a nation where ' liberalism ' is exercised quite heavily and I personally believe that actually hinders our economy . The issue is that the majority of people are illiterate and so the lack of a central authoritarian structure results is massive instability in a variety of socio-economic issues. For example , say the government wants to build a dam which will displace a community of 50 people . The media will rush to them , bring them in the spotlight and thanks to the public pressure , the project is canned. Now , answering the needs of 50 people resulted in the loss of billions . And that is the curse of a liberal democracy. And so , I believe that developing nations need to be a bit more centralised and authoritarian while growing ( And foreign investors will love that too , won't they )

    • @mroanderson8971
      @mroanderson8971 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

This is something I can agree with however I think the issue lies not with the form of government but the media. Referring to your example of a socio-ecenomic issue where 50 people are to be removed from a village and the project is stopped due to social pressure therefore causing a lot more people to die as a result. The main question is where does this pressure come from? Well it comes from the media (doesn't matter the form of government the media is always more powerful).
My point being that in a democracy the side the media want to win will always win, just as in dictatorship if the media are to gain from the dictators rule then that dictator will stay in power because of media support. The media own the governments because they control the people. So no matter the form of government the changes that need to be made in order for any economy to experience its full potential cant be made unless the media want those changes to be made which they don't because they don't want anyone else to get wealthier as the more wealthy people there are in the world the less wealthy they become themselves. So because a lot of people are minimally educated they will believe what the media are telling them and hence the cycle continues. Until the problem of the global media corruption is resolved the worlds nations will never know their full potential economically. I also believe the media are the reason we will never achieve world peace but that's another matter.

How much do you guys think China paid him? I will acknowledge that the US and much of the West have a lot of issues and that the current neoliberal system is pretty bad but that doesn’t mean a one party state with limited freedoms is somehow the best way to go. Also, the economic growth of China is less due to some magical economic system and more due to the opening up of trade. I assure you once China becomes rich enough and stops growing very fast, the cracks in the system will start to show and it will be like the west is today.

Economic development is not exclusive to a singular political ideology. Singapore and China have impressive growth, but Danny Quah forgets that East Asia is more than China; democratic societies such as India and S. Korea have also shown significant economic growth. So I would not attribute economic success in Singapore and China to the structure of their respective governments, instead, economic growth there is resulting from the policies of their governments, which can be replicated regardless of structure.

Sociopolitical or economic responses are tribal responses or the feeling of separation, otherness or relatedness.
In reality there is only one response or one event, culture or the Heart. In science it's called zero-point energy, spiritually it's called God.
We as humankind (humans and non-humans) have to surrender ourselves to culture or God in order to 'serve' one another or these apparent tribal agreements or responses that are arising before us.
So rather than sitting there feeling as if you have to sort the situation out sociopolitically or economically. You can in that moment "turn" the four faculties or surrender them to culture or God himself. And allow him to sort it out.
