He also used specifically the term 'meat eaters' multiple times while not explicitly mentioning mammals. Which still leads me to the conclusion that he was using the more general term and not the taxonomic clade. This is supported by the fact that he seemed to be somewhat rejecting the entire concept of taxonomy despite accepting 'mammals' which is essentially identical to 'Mammalia'. Things like "pigeons aren't animals, they are birds", or "mackerels aren't animals, they are fish" , and over many discussions with the same people I finally noticed a pattern. "Normal'' people, meaning very uneducated, they don't use those words (or many others) in some scientific categorization sense (of course they don't, they have not been taught that), but instead how some common conditions in their daily lives have made them learn the word. I noticed that by "animal'' most of the time they meant mammals. That was their frame of reference for the word, their personal history has involved for whatever reason, most consistent association between the word "animal'' and animals that can be grouped as mammals. And not any mammals, but certain land mammals that have common features that they see as similar. Since occasionally they would also say things like "whales aren't mammals" directly or indirectly.
