Sepulveda Basin Burns As LA County Sets Temperature Record

- The Sepulveda Basin caught fire today as the nearby Woodland Hills temperature monitoring station at Pierce College recorded the highest temperature ever in Los Angeles County when it reached 121 degrees. The record high temp beat the 119 degree temperature set back on July 22, 2006.
The blaze started around 1pm near Burbank/405 and temporarily caused the shutdown of the southbound 405 lanes. The fire spread to 20 acres before firefighters were able to get the upper hand and contain it in about three hours. Two firefighters and a civilian were reported to have non-life-threatening injuries but those injuries weren't specified by LAFD. No information has yet been released on the cause and the freeway closures were lifted around 4:45am.

I live nearby and this is where I do 99% of my runs. Sadly, a body was recovered after the fire was distinguished, probably one of our many transient locals, who have accidentally ignited fires here on numerous occasions.

I’m not surprised this fire was so intense. This is in Woodland Hills, where temperatures reached 124 degrees yesterday. Horrible.
That is not Woodland Hills, that is Sepulveda Basin, Van Nuys bordering on Encino. Woodland Hills is straight west about 8-10 miles

People forget that the San Fernando Valley was a desert until people started moving in planting trees and houses going in everywhere. I grew up there in the 50's and 60's and it was hot then. But now the greenies and democrats won't let the underbrush and dry grass be cleared, so when it burns they blame it on climate change , so let it burn. I live in Arizona and it's HOT here we don't have fires here because it's hot. Generally it's because of lightning storms or people who are careless when they are in the desert with the vehicles having fun.

The earth has been burning like this for millions of years, this is normal and is needed. If we didn’t want these fires we would be doing brush control like A LOT of other states. Cali is basically mostly over grown and dry brush, perfect fuel for these beautiful fires 🔥

If you want to get an idea of how difficult it is to defend your home with a garden hose just skip to 6:00 and watch what happens in just one minute. Watch that tree almost explode in front of you. Think of the radiating heat coming off of that. This is typical of what our firefighters are having to deal with.

Why does the county not do basic fire mitigation in the Sepulveda Basin, like cutting the weeds and grasses for starters?

it seems they could do better fire control when its not fire season. this happens every year and has for 100s of years. its normal unless humans start them. Building these houses in a tinder box is the fault of zoning, and building practices in California. Doing so loses money for insurance companies and ultimately everyone, and jeopardizes human, and animal life.
Agreed. In this case, this is an area that remains "natural" as a backup flood plain so there aren't houses there. However, you are correct that all the dry grass could have easily been cut down to reduce the fire load. As I was watching the video I was wondering why all the tall grass was left as it is a fire hazard. And the grasses aren't native, so they dry out in the fall and add to the fire problem. Humans need to wise up and do a better job helping nature. This is not how it should be done. Cheers.
