Day 2 of Rabbit Fire - Major Flames Close To Homes

- LAKEVIEW (CNS) - A massive brush fire in the Lakeview area continued spreading overnight, but while crews made some progress Saturday establishing a containment line around the blaze, new evacuations were ordered.
As of Saturday morning, the Rabbit Fire was estimated at 4,500 acres, with 5% containment, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
An evacuation order was issued around 11:15 a.m. Saturday for the area north of Gilman Springs Road, east of Jack Rabbit Trail, south of First Street and west of California Avenue and Highway 79. An evacuation warning was issued north and west of Highway 79, south of First Street and east of California Avenue, according to the fire department.
It was not immediately clear how many people were affected by the evacuation orders and warnings.
The Rabbit Fire was reported about 3:25 p.m. Friday in the area of Jack Rabbit Trail and Allesandro Boulevard, just east of Mystic Lake and roughly halfway between Moreno Valley and San Jacinto, according to the fire department.
A man suffered burn injuries at the onset of the fire, with some reports indicating the person may have been in or near a vehicle that caught fire. The victim was taken to Riverside University Health System-Medical Center in Moreno Valley for treatment
By 7:30 p.m. Friday, the fire had consumed more than 2,800 acres as the flames moved rapidly through open space.
California Highway Patrol officers and sheriff’s deputies diverted northbound vehicles away from Gilman Springs Road and onto Bridge Street, an officer said. Additional road closure were in place for Highway 79 in the Lambs Canyon area from Gilman Springs Road to California Avenue.

I was TDY to March AFB near Ontario, CA in the early 80's when a major fire occurred. I will never forget watching thru binoculars at a safe distance, as the flames raced up multiple canyons, engulfing several homes, that all appeared to have been built way to close to one another.

great footage. remember..wildfires are a natural process. humans can and do start them..but if its dry enough to burn..it will eventually. the variable is how much fuel they have available to them. nothing should preclude the preservation of life and property.

4 fires started within 24 hours all in Riverside County. They don't know yet, but I can guess how they started.

Thoughts and prayers for everyone out in Cali dealing with this disaster.
It seems like there should be a simple system, a water tank and a pump connected to a pipes that spray water over the houses, in emergencies. I'd certainly try to have something like that set up, if I lived in a fire zone.
I’ve seen advertisements for a stock water system from 500-1000 gallons that can be purchased with a pump and hose line. I agree that I’d definitely look into installing one if a lived out where water sources are a problem.

Are all firemen required to attend a fire to watch, or are they supposed to try and get water to spray on the fire to see if they might be able to put it out? Just wondering what the job description is

can someone that has actual experience and wont get defensive , explain why you very seldom see burnout operations being done behind the fire plows ? Is it because it will slow the plow down and they want to improve the line quickly ? Or are the fuels so flashy that they are afraid of when the backing fire off the line meets the head , it will lift so hard , there may be too much spotting ?

A lot of people off-road Jack Rabbit Trail and it should be shut down. Several times fires have started there.

Canada is still have many fires that are not controlled. I worry about humans n animals esp wildlife. If people have horses, cows etc turn them loose n head them away from fires. Sending prayers.
