    I love the alien-worlds and fitting music in this game, the creepy glitch areas, the lore, the boss fights and warp-ability that makes you look like an overpowered computer-program, reminds me of matrix

    This is my favorite game. If you like Metroid, sci-fi and meta and philosophical scenarios, don't hesitate!
    The atmosphere is also something beyond what Metroid usually does: rather than isolation, you will more often get the feeling of being in an alien world. The result is as non-sensical and beautiful as you can imagine. Truly a game apart from the rest.

      I finished it a week ago and I feel incomplete, I'm constantly drawn to its lore and music now. It's definitely beyond any Metroid as the creator somehow got a really interesting scifi story into a Metroid style game, which I don't think I've seen outside of Cave Story (also one of my favorite games)

      I'm not going to say (for me) that's it's better than Metroid, it is a Metroid clone for sure, but brings enough things (through story telling) to set it apart, however, that was also my only real pet peeve about it, it so deeply set you up with the story progression through the game, that upon completion, the ending part of it was HUGELY "Anti-Climactic", I mean the game is intricate in play and story, with having to be creative to even find out where some things are then attempt (A LOT) to get them, then add the little mysteries and twists, the game is great, but then it's game over and the script and story just shut you down like "WTF ???", "oh wait, I know, wait a minute, there will be more.................or NOT, no it just was very disappointing, and that's where the original NES Metroid is better for me, it was simple, beat space pirates useing Metroids to terrorize the galaxy, not only simple, so no loss, if you beat it in less than 60 minutes, you get to play a second quest with a bikini clad Samus just for the funny of it, the maker who I recognize as a talented person, could have put a little more into the story end so you don't feel like you wasted your time and effort, but that's just my opinion

      Super Metroid is my absolute favorite game. I don't think I'll ever find a game I enjoy more. But I'm going to get this to see if that stands true. Super Metroid just had such a deep, captivating, and claustrophobic atmosphere. Everything about it was perfect.

      That's honestly half the reason i want to buy it. You have to have a lot of passion to see a project like this go so far. Same thing with Stardew Valley.

      I do respect and recognize that one individual did this, but I think it should have been a test game, once it tested as bug free and loved, he should have done a final retail version with upgraded graphics, like SNES/Super Metroid type

    • @Itzsfo0
      @Itzsfo0 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      at this point its pretty clean ive had no real issues. better then alot of other games put it that way.
      nah (i mean to each their own, no disrespect) but...personally I like the style of graphics, the way it is...if they had made it like Super Metroid (or AM2R) or the upcoming GHOST SONG (while that is cool) the more sprite-based graphics of 16-32bit era...not my thing
      NES > SNES ...but thats me (to each their own_
      pixel art (1001 spikes, axiom verge) over hand-crarfted sprite-based games...but hey everyone is different.
      I like Hollow Knight for an entirely diff reason
      Super Metroid is a fine fine game but...meh not a huge fan of that graphical style (i was glad despite loving the SNES and having tons of cartridges) I was glad when the GBA/DS came out...revitalizing the 8-bit era...call it nostalgia, call it whatever you want...its just my preference.
      Like you said "i think"...everyone is diff, no hate or anything just disagreeing (disagree to agree I guess) lol

      it's not that I didn't love the hell out of the game, I do, but I think that with the capability of the Switch, the price of games should be relative to what is offered in the games, the new Octopath Traveler takes a step back with pseudo SNES FF 6 graphix, but the game as a whole takes advantages of almost everything the Switch has to offer, plus the internal stuff like story and such, but games like Axiom Verge and The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth, Has Been Heros, are all graphically limited, gameplay limited and story wise, yes, very retro, short and sweet, but price wise, most certainly NOT worth the $30+ I paid for them, $20 (new) to $15 (used), sure, no prob, it's just I see too many games that are just thrown together, small and unimaginative games cheaply and then asking unrealistic prices for them, I recognize Axiom Verge big time, but it It was better suited for the NDS @ $20

    I think you forgot something that made this game easy for tracking progress: there are not special requirements to cross any door and the map marks which rooms you already visited but not fully explored. So if you already fully explored a room, then you didn't have the power up.

  • @Immorpher
    @Immorpher 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I love getting lost and coming back with better weapons just to see how powerful I got, so the backtracking is a treasure to me. I loved this about Metroid and even Turok on the N64. For this reason I love Metroid and Axiom Verge, not so much the other metroid style games.

    I really liked this game, but trying to 100% it is a nightmare with no map hints to collectibles and upgrades. It wouldn't be a problem but so many of them had no visual hint to indicate where to look for them. Can't expect the player to attack every square inch of the game.

    • @KevinCow
      @KevinCow 7 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      And even if you drill every single inch of the world, you still won't find everything, because some pickups require the most obscure nonsense to get. I gave up hope of getting 100% when I found out that to get one weapon, I had to find a document that told me a password and that it was the key to something far to the east, then enter the password while standing in one specific room on the far WEST side of the map. And the password had to be activated while you were standing in the room; activating it outside and then going in wouldn't open the way.
      I have absolutely no idea how anyone could've figured this out on their own. Nowhere else is it established that passwords could work like that, and the note directs you to the complete opposite end of the world.
      I can appreciate when games let me figure things out on my own, but I have my limits, and this soured my experience a bit.

      @misterkeebler 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      ugh....this kind of turns me off a bit. You make it sound even more cryptic than some earlier NES games. Back then it was more forgivable only because those types of games were so new, and the bar for standards was lower. I don't know if i would want that type of approach in a newer game though. I'll probably still play and just focus on the main game though, instead of 100%

      As someone who is a 100%-er and who loves Axiom Verge, can confirm, did not get 100% on this game. I would recommend the ideal way of playing the game as going through the main game and then looking everything up on youtube explain videos. Because the lore hidden in all the secrets is actually awesome and I'm now addicted to it and can't wait for the next game!

    • @Itzsfo0
      @Itzsfo0 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      i like it personally but to each their own. *like hollow knight* like the upcoming GHOST SONG
      a) massive interconnected tile-based world (and I do mean massive...Hollow Knight, Rain World, etc) the larger the better, not everyone agrees, but me (as a long-time gamer...for nearly 3 decades), and loving platformers, and open-world games alike, and of course the metroidvanias...isometric dungeon crawlers, and roguevanias (and all the other sub-genres) for me I can honestly say THE bigger the better, I like exploration....its the KEY component to my enjoyment in games (soundtrack, and graphical design/art-design, challenge, replay value, fun factor, combat mechanics/movement mechanics, progression systems IF any, bestiary/bosses, NPCs, and quests, lore/back-story, while all those aspects are important, for me exploration remains key) a large interconnected world that has a eerie/isolated feeling (sci fi/horror + metroidvania) is my favorite "merging" of genres. Large, and dreadful. No real help, no real hints, no hand-holding, the type of game you can spend 40, 50, 60, 70 hours and look back and go "hm...I know I haven't found everything, not even close..." that is what motivates me. Its not everyones cup of tea of course.
      b) eerie atmosphere (ala GHOST SONG, an upcoming metroidvania with a more sprite-based 16-bit era look....while its not my preference, I prefer the more 8-bit pixel-art style) I still love its look Matt White is the creator/lead designer (and basically outside of some soundtrack help, he's also been a 1 man passion project) hes out of Columbus, Ohio (and has been working on GHOST SONG since 2012, first it started off as a Kickstarter funded project...he got the $60,000 initial funding and he started using STENCYL (a flash based program) browser-based...and soon realized his ambitions far exceeded HTML. With memory restrictions he moved over to Unity (Unity 2.0) and "Spine" (also what Thomas Happ has been using he is friends with Matt White and they keep in touch). Matt has stated that nothing short of a world-war (3) and a massive global disaster will stop him from finishing & releasing the game (atm its currently only slated for PC/Steam/GOG but he has intentions of porting to consoles).
      It has the most epic/eerie feeling (he says he is inspired by the obvious Souls-like no matter how played out that may be, he doesn't care he isnt making games for the "gamers" he says he HOPES they enjoy it (of course) but...he is making a game that HE would want to play (cause first and foremost he is a gamer, and he see's thats the issue with alot of AAA game design, they arent making games for themselves, they are making games that they think will sell based on current-trends) he doesn't want to come off all humble, and important, but he says he wants to make a game that he would want to play (A) and (B) pays homage to the games that came before that inspired him growing up which he says isn't just 1-2 titles, its a few...its Aliens: Isolation (a more recent title), AM2R (of course) Super Metroid, Dark Souls (Demon Souls), as well as PSX_era titles like Clock Tower (the dread of having a constant creature/HUNTER chasing you throughout the large open-game world) and you have permanent upgrades as you progress with your "pet" that dangles beside you floating in the air like some sort of robot-air-version of R2-D2. Feed it, and based on what you feed it, it goes through a moth-like metamorphosis. (and RPG like progression systems in the game) he has excellent hit detection on the game, excellent soundtrack (which he has gotten some help with) supposebly theres a thriving INDIE scene (game development scene) in Columbus, Ohio...and Matt has been a gamer for nearly 30 years. He said he likes to keep people up to date w/ his blog...to journalize his "experience" going through the years (and he has offered in-game content/designs & creations for those who backed him early on).
      I have seen alot of walkthrough videos, trailors, in-game tutorial explanations (and hes been involved with the community at large over the past few years) and there seems to be a very positive reception to his game. I think after Death's Gambit & Hollow Knight & Chasm...GHOST SONG will be the next bit metroidvania to sell 1+ million copies and make a splash with a high level of praise/critical reception. It just looks very good, smooth, and its coming along quite good (From 2014 to 2017) he's made alot of progress.
      Check out 2 of the links below (one is to his main site) and the other is the kickstarter page he created years ago...and has kept a BLOG (journal) over the years/detailing his progress. He is relatable to the "stress" of waiting for a title, and he understands if people are "skeptical" but he says, it will finish when it finishes, and nothing will stop him from finishing and he seems quite genuine as well. He's done a few smaller projects before this (and Edmund McMillen himself has vouched for Matt talking about Matt's Previous work...Matt created the LLC (small studio) called "Old Moon Games" in 2009 3 years before he started work on GHOST SONG, and he was involved with (on a small level) the design of a game called Risk of Rain. A more stripped down platformer (but he was friends with the guys over at Discord Games.)
      Anyway in GHOST SONG you crash land on a Alien planet, a planet LONG forgotten, over the decades/generations it has been attempted to be "colonized" but never successfully, the planet is called LORIAN V (in the Lorian solar-system). SO it has that Aliens/metroid classic metroidvania feel, a lonely, large isolated eerie, atmospheric, hand-crafted sprite-based sci-fi/horror/massive/metroidvania. Matt has stated "I dont believe in innovation for innovation matters (innovations sake) its not something you can "sum up at will" usually innovation is "retrospective" something we look back on and say "oh yea that game pushed the envelope, it was unique, boundary-breaking - " but its not something you can just DO....naturally atleast not most...he just wants to make a solid game, with solid mechanics, loads of dialogue, a real backstory, some real lore, enjoyable yet challenging exploration, a game that as said (he would want to play). There is just something about this game that gives me the feeling its going to be quite good. It's not like Matt is some random guy who has no experience in game design...after 17 years of game design, and 30 years of gaming...and having a love / passion for games...I have a strong feeling his title will be a success. And he is very approachable / friendly. He was at PAX West last year (and Thomas happ the creator of Axiom Verge told him "try to finish it before 2019 E3, maybe you can get a booth /laughs).

    I also thought the lack of map target was an odd choice. That was literally the only guidance you got or needed in Super Metroid. I can't help but think it would have helped the aimless mid game of Axiom Verge. Fast travel is weak, not needed, that defeats the whole point of good Metroidvania level design.

      for a system with capabilities like the PS4, PC, Wii-U and Switch, I was disappointed to see a game graphically reversed to the NES, even for $20, I paid $300 for the system, I want to see games of at the very least SNES quality, too many games are being put out as low quality and stamped with the word "Retro" to make people think they're cool, I'd rather pay an extra $10-$20 for a graphically more appealing game or port than a cheaply constructed and/or cookie-cutter game

      There's a difference between hand holding, and something like Zelda showing you a crack in the wall for a bomb. There's a reason ALTTP on SNES had visual indicators compared to LoZ on NES, and that reason is there is no sense of reward from just touching every wall you come across and pressing against every nook in hopes that you find something. There's far more reward in being attentive and noticing a small minute difference in the environment, and finding a prize within. The latter requires a keen eye, the former just requires a lot of time to kill.

    Axiom Verge is GREAT, but it keeps crashing near the end of the game (once before the last boss, and every time just as the credits end). It's not Happ's fault but the devs designated to porting it (Badland Games?).

    I don't know man, I've played Super Metroid on the Super Nintendo and have to say that this game, although it looks great, feels overdone with "alien" if you ask me. Super Metroid really gave the player a feeling of mystery throughout the whole station. It wasn't too much and it wasn't too less, it was just the right amount of detail in the design and not so overdone music. And this is not nostalgia speaking here, I discovered Super Metroid only 5 years ago at the age of 27. Axiom Verge might be more than a great game, developed by just one dude, but comparing it to a masterpiece like Super Metroid goes to far if you ask me.

  • @PacDork

    Drink everytime he says "Metroidvania!" ;) The term "Metroidvania" has been completely misused from it's original intent. It was a way to differentiate the Metroid-style Castlevania games like SOTN & the GBA titles from the traditional linear Castlevanias like 1, 3, 4.

    • @misterkeebler
      @misterkeebler 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Lol, thank you. It sounds even more funny with this game because it was basically built to look exactly like Metroid. There's nothing castlevania-esque about it. Tacking on the 'vania just makes me agree that people forgot where the terms came from and why they were used.

    • @ReziahT
      @ReziahT 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good point... I had only played Metroids and the SOTN/GBA Castlevanias so I figured they were the same thing.
      Well actually, I did try some other Castlevanias but hated then and stopped less than an hour in so I figured maybe they turned more Metroidy later on.
      Anyway, fair enough. Now I know better I'll stop using Metroidvania and start just saying Metroid-like similar to Rogue-like

    • @PacDork
      @PacDork 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ombro - Aw, which Castlevania's did you hate? NES Castlevania 1 & 3 are just phenomenal "arcade" action platformer games. Super Castlevania 4 on SNES is as well (and maybe a bit easier and friendly for the not-as-hardcore). Dracula X for PC Engine & SNES are also great, as is Bloodlines for Sega Genesis. Honestly the only one I never cared for was C2 Simons Quest for NES.... although that was th first foray into the adventure-style.

    • @ReziahT
      @ReziahT 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      PacDork Ahh well see I started Castlevania with the N64 game and wow... Just wow... So bad.

    • @PacDork
      @PacDork 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ombro - Whoa, no - that game is a piece of shit lol. That was trying to be Tomb Raider or something...most 3D Castlevanias are garbage - but try some of the great 2D ones. They have the art, action and and music you love about SOTN and GBA games, but with more linear level/boss/level/boss gameplay.

    I have 50$ to spend right now and I was looking through metroidvanias on the switch. I already have hollow knight (although I'm stuck on the stupid alt final boss and havent played in a month or two) but I knew there were some more good ones out there. And hell I would've gotten axiom verge A LONG time ago if it had a trailer. These poor people putting their games on the switch don't add trailers, and just images alone wont completley sell someone on a game. Im glad I reminded myself of axiom and looked up a review

    • @Itzsfo0

      well to each their own, I love metroid, and I love Axiom Verge, but I think GTA V as a single-player, stand-alone - single play through is 10x better. Just an amazing fun game, and GTA IV is a classic, no offense, I mean 1 man made this you gotta respect that, and its def a passion project but...meh I dont think you can compare Axiom Verge and 8-bit pixel art passion project metroidvania to a $100 million dollar epic open world 3D GTA title (its not even a fair comparison) thats like.....
      La Mulana vs...Witcher 3...lol it just doesn't make sense to compare.
      But everyone is diff. I've been gaming for nearly 30 years, I enjoy a variety of games both AAA and Indie...but I think there are certain AAA games that are just way beyond what can be done in indie design I mean I love Hollow Knight, Axiom Verge, Shovel Knight, Super Meat Boy, Binding of Isaac, Braid, Hyper Light Drifer (and the dozens of others over the last decade or so) but I also love my Skyrims, and Just Cause 2, and Uncharted 2, Breath of the wild, Xenoblade Chronicles, and GTA IV, and Red Dead Redemption...but everyone is diff - GTA online might not be all that great, but I am talking as a single player/first-time experience GTA V blows this game out of the water, but I have nothing but respect for Thomas Happ - Axiom Verge is still a great game. Next up Chasm & Death's Gambit.

    Just beat the game on hard, to be honest I have only 2 real complaints about the game. The controls towards the endgame after you get the red trenchcoat with warps. I wish they had a designated button intead of having to double tap in the direction to warp back and forth. The second is the weapon variety where its cool to have an assortment to choose from, you wont really need to use a majority of them to clear the game. Theres no situational need most of the time to use most of the weapons made available.

    ok, first...comparing it to any Castlevania is ignorant, this is 100% NES Metroid, despite being on a system capable of so much graphically, it was fun...at first, acquiring items and power ups as you went along became so difficult and/or unknowable, it made getting necessary items really tedious, (if at all), and like the original Metroid, you don't really need all items to beat it, but that's half the fun, oh wait, no way to really find the stuff is there ???, I think $20 was pushing it for me, but I bought it used for $15 anyway, I didn't mind the cut scenes, they really didn't drone on too much like most games now a days, still, my overall is based on length of the game, price, replayability (75% of a score for me), frankly, it's kind of short, so 2.5/4, $20 for what you get on a system capable of so much 2/4, despite the length and price, the replayability is great for me, 3.5/4 for a total of 8/12 (2.6/4), but that's just my opinion, not fact, so no hatin y'all

    Seems like a cool game but the 8-bit style is kind of off-putting to me, and not in the intentional way to create a more alien and hostile atmosphere. I'll go as far to say it looks ugly. And I'm not really a fan of games that use guns as the protagonist's weapon, I much prefer a sword or even a bow, full auto gun just seems boring. However I will commend the game by switching up typical conventions you'd expect to find in a metroidvania game, that and the fact this was made by one guy has to be applauded.

    I’m actually not a fan of this game. Put 15 hours in and I’m disliking it. The graphics depress me (I hated the 80s gaming graphics). Gameplay is ok but I can’t get past the 8 bit colors that are muted.
