    Great job. I learn something new every time I watch one of your videos.
    In 68 years I have never heard a set screw called a grub screw.
    Fascinating.

      Thank you Christian, I also find it fascinating how there are different names for the same thing :)

    Mike - excellent video!
    Your lathe has two screws that ride in the groove machined on the outside of the quill - one is fixed and aligns the quill to the opening, and the other can be tightened to lock the quill in place.
    Some lathes only have one screw - the screw that tightens to lock the quill. With this design, if you tighten the screw with the quill misaligned, the end of the screw can bite into the edge of the groove, leaving a burr that causes the quill to not move smoothly. The solution to this is to do everything you suggested, but also use a machinist's file to carefully remove the burr and restore the edge of the groove.

    • @billwells8054
      @billwells8054 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly! This happened to me often, so I converted the adjustable screw to fixed. So now I do not have the adjustable screw and do not miss it. Should be using a screw to lick te quill?

    Mike I appreciate this video on the tail stock quill cleaning. Very helpful. One thing off subject I wanted to mention - your sound system for your videos is great, especially the intro. Very well balanced.
    Thanks for your sharing.

    Excellent bit of advice! I lost the switch on my old Grizzly lathe (2003 model) and while I was playing in the headstock area I figured I'd take the reeves drive apart and give it a good cleaning to make the speed control smoother. Fairly simple thing to do which adds significantly to the joy of having a smooth, well running machine. Keep the tips rolling! :)

    My lathe 1614VS just come back from Axminster for a repair, the head stock pulley worked itself lose and caused a vibration but I could not find the fault, but they sorted it in no time , great service again! Take care Lutz

    Excellent advice Mike. Recently, I found the stem of my tool rest had become stiff. I took it off and to my horror found it had begun to rust. I then remembered I had been turning some very wet wood a week previously and had overlooked the moisture which had seeped into that area. A good clean with a wire brush and some lube soon had things back to normal.

    Very useful piece of information Mike. Oddly enough I'm due to do mine tomorrow & like your good self I use GT85. Been using it for years, I find it a better lubricant than the War Department 40 & it lasts longer & gives better results (imo).

      @geofo60 That's because WD-40 is NOT a lubricant. WD means *_Water Displacement._*
      Works GREAT on things like wet spark plug wires or distributor cap.

    Mike, I have a question about your JSP respirator. Because of your recommendation, I bought one and really think it's a great piece of woodturning equipment. Do you have problems with chips collecting and sticking to the neck flap? Any recommendations on keeping chips from sticking there?

    • @mikefricker3603
      @mikefricker3603 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Staynavytom . I have one too and have the same experience. Not sure there is anything to be done due to the nature of the material. Will be delighted to be proved wrong if anyone has a solution! Mine is the Axminster branded one. Apart from my lathe, of course, it has to be one of the best purchases I have made. I quite like my lungs! All the best to all. Mike

    • @MikeWaldt
      @MikeWaldt  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, I am pleased to hear the you like the JSP, but I cannot offer any solution to your question, part from a quick brush, or blast with the airline...that's what I do :)
      I have to add that I personally don't find it much of a problem, but it would be nice if a different material was used to sort it .
      Cheers
