"The whole thing on the left" is a clock dial, which is displays your home time in every other watch MODE. Since I'm constantly running timers- kids toothbrushing time, baking, pomodoros, etc, it's nice to be able to keep the timer up and also have that badass futuristic digi-analog dial lettin' me know the time.
The Royale is a brilliant little watch. If I hadn't already customised my own strap, by cutting down a 24mm to fit the 22mm lugs, I'd be buying one of these Vario options. They look great.
To be fair, I also have a G-shock GBDH1000 which also has a negative display. That one is really well done. Always easy to read no matter what angle. So evidently Casio knows how, but they haven't done it with the squares.
"Negative display" works better on a MIP display like my Garmin Instinct Solar, it's still readable at all angles, but it can also change mode/watch face on demand so even if it was a problem it's moot. But I consider that this more of a fitness tracker, always keep another watch I want to wear on the other wrist
@@RelativeTime Sharp knows how to do it, the GBDH1000 has a Sharp memory-in-pixel display. Garmin uses it on some of their smartwatches as well, it's not a Casio technology. It's very power efficient.
AE 1200 and AE 2000 are my 2 favorite watches. AE2000 is almost a G-Shock with the case built like a tank, mineral crystal and 200m WR. When it comes to AE1200 people like it because of its functionality and durability. I have 2 of them and one literally went through hell and is still working perfectly fine. People tend to underestimate Casio's plastic watches but believe it or not, they can survive some serious shit. While my AE1200 still looks fine, the resin on my coleague's G-shock 6900 started to flake for some reason. There is something in that plastic Casio uses that makes these watches indestructible, even the acrylic crystal kiinda plays its role since it is nearly impossible to break it due to its flexibility. :D If I was in the US Navy and had to be deployed to Afghanistan AE1200 would certainly be my choice.
Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.

Thank you for this! It motivated me to modify my WS1200H. A cheap beater that lets you know a good time to fish. The face is clunky and the straps were aggy. I made a fabric strap band from old scraps and it feels heavenly now! It cost $0 and 30 minutes. Such a good decision that allows me to actually ENJOY the watch.
Back in the 80s you didn’t buy a watch like this is a holy Grail of your collection. You wore it as you every day watch and when you destroyed it you got another. I remember my grand parents when these first started coming on the scene the style of watch somebody was on Phil Donahue show in a suit wearing a black plastic watch they thought that was tacky but now that’s common place nobody even give that a second thought
It’s also one of the most practical travel watches ever made as it can track 4 different time zones at the same time. They also make a steel bracelet version as well but the stock strap works fine for me
I appreciate the thoughtful review. I didn't I think much of this watch until I saw the silver with the cinnamon Vario strap and it was like a light went off in my head. It looks so cool and unique - just the right balance of vintage and tech. I have since bought the skxmod case for sapphire protection. Lots of sno-seal has made the strap (mostly) water friendly. The case and face can be debadged for a less cluttered look. The final piece of the puzzle was to do a hydromod. It improves the clarity in ways that a picture can't quite capture. I actually find the world map quite helpful for tracking colleagues in multiple time zones. It's my newest favorite.
I bought the brown cinnamon Vario band a couple months ago and love it! Besides this all black version there are a gunmetal, bronze and green plastic bezel trim versions and even an all silver for the 1200. There is also a AE1300 which is the same case shape but with a different dial configuration. Yes, you could modify/cut/trim a larger band but these Vario’s are of the highest quality and are well worth it.
I have modded the hell out of my Casio Royale. I discovered and posted a mod to extend the alarm time and add a flashing setting, removed the extra text, replaced the leds at one point with ultra bright green ones, NFC support at one point, added first glow in the dark paint lume backlighting that I then replaced with full tritium backlighting, and replaced the case with the stainless steel one with sapphire glass. It's close to a $300 watch now. So $28 for a strap that actually fits is child's play.
@@RelativeTime Barely. It took removing the LED diffuser lens and 6 hours of carefully sanding down the CPU/epoxy bump with frequent test fits to get them to fit. I also had to use 1.5mm thick rectangular vials as the cylindrical ones were too impracticable.

I've had the silver "Royale" for a while ,I love it I removed a lot of the lettering to clean it up, and ten year battery can't be ignored, the only thing I miss is not being able to have the date DD/MM/YY which is of coarse is the correct way, and for future review might I suggest the Casio WV59...stay safe

You gave the best description for this watch, "Retro Coolness". I own a silver and a black one( modded both /without the Illuminator and World time ), and both are my favorite daily beaters.
I just bought a Casio Royale. It arrives tomorrow. I am super excited. My favorite Casio I own is the Twin Sensor SGW100. I like it better than all my Gshocks, which is crazy. It has a perfect size, perfect display, and more functionality than most Gshocks around $100 and it only costs $41 on Amazon right now. I got mine on sale a few years ago for $30. It has most of the functionality of a $300 Gshock Mudmaster. SGW100 is the MOST underrated, under valued, under the radar Casio on the market.
@@RelativeTime My Royale arrived today. It does look/feel cool, although I am realizing it is a LOT of wasted screen space. The space above the map doesn’t seem to do anything. The map is pretty useless, the “analog” clock is also pretty useless. But, the map/analog make the look. I wish the space above the map was more useful.
@@vipnetworker yeah it kind of is. If you set the alarm I think something displays on that upper space. But otherwise useless. There are some more efficient casios, but the royale still looks the coolest.

I love, love, love the AE-1200! Great vid, Shane. I've been wanting to get a few of these Vario straps, but haven't placed an order yet. I just need to check the length on them, to make sure they'll fit my 8" wrist. I wanted to get some of their tweed straps, but they were too short for me.
It's a great throw away travel watch....a good idea from Vario to cash in on the only thing many hate about the watch.... definitely going to take another look at there website....only bought one strap previously from these guys, a Harris Tweed for my Exciton and it's a fantastic very well made strap and if I say so myself looks superb on the watch....🏴⌚🏴⌚

And may I recommend if buying from Vario to spend an extra 4USD or 3GBP etc for the clip on compass. If as a grown man or woman rocking a compass clipped on to the strap of your Casio Royal does not float your boat nothing will.

Make a video on W800H, especially the Silver version (W800H-7AV), it's a stunning piece of art, It's one of THE PERFECT Casios, a dial symmetric from all 4 sides, Time exactly in the center of it in *BOLD,* with day, date, Month, and YEAR, Snooze, Alarm, Sig, all the information you ever need just at a glance without a push of a button! And the Silver/Grey one is the BEST of them all, it ACTUALLY looks metallic and NOT like a painted plastic! Combined with various NATO Straps - it's just THE PERFECT GOD TIER CASIO‼
Yep, managed to acquire four of these over the past eight or nine months. Then I liked the AE series so much I made a collection of each different model, from AE-1000 all the way up to the AE-3000. @@RelativeTime In terms of functionality the only ones that are different in that series would be the AE-1500 and the AE-1300. The AE-1300 has the same case and size as the Royale. I like both the Royale and the AE-3000. The 3000 is a big watch so won't be popular with everyone, but I like large watches so I'd have to go with either that or the Royale. I have a "bronze" Royale which is nice. As well as two black and green on fabric straps and a "chrome" on a bracelet. Such a cheap and cheerful watch. Hooks you in just like those rapidly multiplying Vostoks.
As a kid, I managed to destroy some f91w predecessor (I think it was a dw-240; this would have been around 85-87, so it couldn't have been a f91w, as that didn't come out until 89). My dad replaced it with a g-shock, which I did not manage to destroy, but which gave me an epic watch tan line. Digital stuff was so cool in the 80s. I remember thinking how futuristic the digital dash in my mom's new Cadillac looked 😆
random but this strap will work on the wrm200h also random if u have the 18 to 22mm adapters for the ae1200, it will fit the mrw200h just carefully file part of the lklug area

Great review as always. Side note, I still own and wear my Casio Databank. I wish there were more strap options for it because it has a similar flare design like this AE1200. At least it looks good with 2 piece straps at 22mm, not like skinny ties. 🙂
Yep I'm going to order a couple of these for my solid Bronze/Sapphire crystal, mod! I paid 170.00 for the case, assembled with the crystal and 4 screws.
Lets not forget the Casios raw functionality reliability & accuracy at such a low cost. No serous worries about hurting losing or damaging it as it didnt cost $$$$$
This is a very well done video, Shane. You have polished a $20 watch and $28 strap beyond what they deserve. I recently acquired a Garmin Instinct Solar, and it crushes every Casio I have owned in every possible way.
Great review, thanks! About the strap, I wouldn't know, as mine is the green one, so it came on a nylon strap that is ok. A Vario strap undoubtedly would aid in comfort. Otherwise, as another commenter said earlier, these are maybe Casio's most precise cheap digitals, the 10 year battery life renders the solar issue moot and the size is great for those with 7in wrists and above. The writing on the dial doesn't bother me in the slightest, but on the case it did. It was easy enough to remove. As to future Casio reviews, take a look at the W217H line. In my opinion an improvement on the venerable F91w line. It has various resin colors, and also versions with stainless steel bracelets. The rubber strap might surprise you, much more supple and comfortable than on some of those on older models.

International shipping is still goofy these days, and I'm not sure who is to blame. These straps went from Singapore to Chicago pretty quick, but then sat in Chicago for over a month. No idea why, but that seems to be the norm with Chicago these days.

i would recommend u to try the AE2000. its a higher tier of the AE World Time series that kinda have cockpit design dial, has a metal shroud/plate cover ontop, kinda a gshock resist or Heavy duty (HD) with 200m WR. better go with the rubber strap rather than the metal one. I donno why its not that popular but its kinda cool to check out.
I haven't seen that one before. Kind of cool, reminds me of a cross between a Timex and some of the AVI-8s I've seen. I might have to check one out. Does the horizon thing on the upper left do anything?

I've been contemplating the graphite strap from Vario for my black AE1200. Was there a wrist shot of it in this review? I saw the watch and strap off the wrist but have had difficulty finding wrist shots on the net. Vario website only has a silver watch with graphite strap pic.

not sure why it's only now i'm attracted to this watch but i think i'm going to get one soon and modify it. i'm thinking of putting some photo filter on it to change the color of the dial (i'd like it purple) , erase those unneeded texts on the case w/ the help of goo gone and a cotton bud + get those strap adaptors to put on a nato or a zulu or a sail cloth. at least if f-ck it up, it won't cost me a pretty penny
The crystal is acrylic not mineral and for the price, compared to other watches it has the most functionality so you get more than you expect and definitely more than what you mentioned one being the worldtimer (easy access to 5 customisable timezones) and quick timezones change with the press of the top buttons combination.. It's the first video that felt more of an ad for straps rather than a watch review, it was more of a superficial look at the watch to justify the straps push..
If only those (and other) straps would come (optionally) without the way too many holes. I'ld rather punch three holes myself, one for the correct size, plus one above and one below. Who needs 7 ->12 holes in a strap?
Have money to spend on some Vario straps……and they’re not selling many of their material types as a whole. Don’t think I will be looking at them in the future because of this.
Call me crazy but this is one of the sexiest watches you are gonna find for $21.97. Want to make it even sexier? Switch the module into the DW 291 case. Perfect watch for Fall Out fans. I have watches that cost many, many more times than the World Time but I find myself wearing it and G-shock more than anything else.

I’ve tried a few strap adapters before, but never really liked them. They seem to create two rotational points that always looks and feels a little odd to me. Although I’ll check it out. I wonder if my Gshock one will work?

Beater travel watch - I have put screen protectors on both of mine. The straps make sense. 100m WR, cheap and if stolen who cares.

There are some more efficient casios, but the royale still looks the coolest.

Shane I enjoyed your video so much I went out and bought two of these. A silver and a black version. I am absolutely so happy with them. Just really fun watches and for $25 or so I can’t think of a better value. Really enjoying wearing them.

I got a silver Casio A700, which is very good for the 30 dollars I spent on it. The mocha vario world time strap looks amazing on it

It's a great throw away travel watch....a good idea from Vario to cash in on the only thing many hate about the watch.... definitely going to take another look at there website....only bought one strap previously from these guys, a Harris Tweed for my Exciton and it's a fantastic very well made strap and if I say so myself looks superb on the watch....🏴⌚🏴⌚

And may I recommend if buying from Vario to spend an extra 4USD or 3GBP etc for the clip on compass. If as a grown man or woman rocking a compass clipped on to the strap of your Casio Royal does not float your boat nothing will.

Yep, managed to acquire four of these over the past eight or nine months. Then I liked the AE series so much I made a collection of each different model, from AE-1000 all the way up to the AE-3000. Perhaps a mention of the strap adapters that are available would be helpful too. As usual, great review and great photography. Thanks.
Which one would say is the best?
@@RelativeTime In terms of functionality the only ones that are different in that series would be the AE-1500 and the AE-1300. The AE-1300 has the same case and size as the Royale. I like both the Royale and the AE-3000. The 3000 is a big watch so won't be popular with everyone, but I like large watches so I'd have to go with either that or the Royale. I have a "bronze" Royale which is nice. As well as two black and green on fabric straps and a "chrome" on a bracelet. Such a cheap and cheerful watch. Hooks you in just like those rapidly multiplying Vostoks.
It has a smartwatch feel to it with great alarms, and a light weight that Casio invented.
Casio Royale rules, i wear it as my tough beater, wont go hiking without it, i have it on a flared leather Cardura strap.
As a kid, I managed to destroy some f91w predecessor (I think it was a dw-240; this would have been around 85-87, so it couldn't have been a f91w, as that didn't come out until 89). My dad replaced it with a g-shock, which I did not manage to destroy, but which gave me an epic watch tan line.
Digital stuff was so cool in the 80s. I remember thinking how futuristic the digital dash in my mom's new Cadillac looked 😆

Great review as always. Side note, I still own and wear my Casio Databank. I wish there were more strap options for it because it has a similar flare design like this AE1200. At least it looks good with 2 piece straps at 22mm, not like skinny ties. 🙂

This is a very well done video, Shane. You have polished a $20 watch and $28 strap beyond what they deserve. I recently acquired a Garmin Instinct Solar, and it crushes every Casio I have owned in every possible way.

Great review, thanks! About the strap, I wouldn't know, as mine is the green one, so it came on a nylon strap that is ok. A Vario strap undoubtedly would aid in comfort. Otherwise, as another commenter said earlier, these are maybe Casio's most precise cheap digitals, the 10 year battery life renders the solar issue moot and the size is great for those with 7in wrists and above. The writing on the dial doesn't bother me in the slightest, but on the case it did. It was easy enough to remove.
As to future Casio reviews, take a look at the W217H line. In my opinion an improvement on the venerable F91w line. It has various resin colors, and also versions with stainless steel bracelets. The rubber strap might surprise you, much more supple and comfortable than on some of those on older models.
That's a good point about Solar. It's nice to have, but after 10 years you might want a new one anyways.

International shipping is still goofy these days, and I'm not sure who is to blame. These straps went from Singapore to Chicago pretty quick, but then sat in Chicago for over a month. No idea why, but that seems to be the norm with Chicago these days.

I have Jay & Kay’s strap adapters for my Casio 5610 which probably would fit this watch, then you can wear most Vario straps.
I love vario stuff, but I wish someone from AliExpress could sell a stainless steel outer case and bracelet kit for this like some g shocks
i would recommend u to try the AE2000. its a higher tier of the AE World Time series that kinda have cockpit design dial, has a metal shroud/plate cover ontop, kinda a gshock resist or Heavy duty (HD) with 200m WR. better go with the rubber strap rather than the metal one. I donno why its not that popular but its kinda cool to check out.
I haven't seen that one before. Kind of cool, reminds me of a cross between a Timex and some of the AVI-8s I've seen. I might have to check one out. Does the horizon thing on the upper left do anything?

I've got the SKXMOD stainless steel case + bracelet for AE-1200 coming monday... pray for me!
It has a stainless steel case with sapphire crystal, new buttons (they're supposed to be more responsive, I don't know yet) and a stainless steel bracelet.
The buttons are definetly more responsive, or springy. It's a pretty easy mod, hope you emjoy it.
I've been contemplating the graphite strap from Vario for my black AE1200. Was there a wrist shot of it in this review? I saw the watch and strap off the wrist but have had difficulty finding wrist shots on the net. Vario website only has a silver watch with graphite strap pic.

Vario has a lot of great straps. I especially like how most of their selection is pretty different from most other strap brands.
I just ordered the copper-colour version and am thinking about which Vario strap eould pair well with it. Was thinking mayve the blueish one. If anyone has the copper and any thoughts on good strap colour conpliments, let me know please!

I agree - the plastic strap on this one is horrendous. Like "designed by an unsupervised summer interne on crack" horrendous.
Get the silver one, remove the text from the case, buy the red and blue Vario straps, and you will have a winning watch combo. That's what I have done ✔
not sure why it's only now i'm attracted to this watch but i think i'm going to get one soon and modify it. i'm thinking of putting some photo filter on it to change the color of the dial (i'd like it purple) , erase those unneeded texts on the case w/ the help of goo gone and a cotton bud + get those strap adaptors to put on a nato or a zulu or a sail cloth. at least if f-ck it up, it won't cost me a pretty penny

The crystal is acrylic not mineral and for the price, compared to other watches it has the most functionality so you get more than you expect and definitely more than what you mentioned one being the worldtimer (easy access to 5 customisable timezones) and quick timezones change with the press of the top buttons combination..
It's the first video that felt more of an ad for straps rather than a watch review, it was more of a superficial look at the watch to justify the straps push..

I think you are right. The USA site doesn't say anything, but I just double checked the Casio International site. It lists it as "Resin Glass".
To you the watch is cheap but here in brazil it is expensive, at least for me (here the ones that don't look fake are like ~50 dollars)

Casio has a number of solar, and automic time models. Yet I can't think of one that looks close to this and has those.

If only those (and other) straps would come (optionally) without the way too many holes. I'ld rather punch three holes myself, one for the correct size, plus one above and one below. Who needs 7 ->12 holes in a strap?

Call me crazy but this is one of the sexiest watches you are gonna find for $21.97. Want to make it even sexier? Switch the module into the DW 291 case. Perfect watch for Fall Out fans.
I have watches that cost many, many more times than the World Time but I find myself wearing it and G-shock more than anything else.
Have you tried any of the aftermarket cases. I put this into one from SKXMod, made me appreciate the design even more.

I’ve tried a few strap adapters before, but never really liked them. They seem to create two rotational points that always looks and feels a little odd to me. Although I’ll check it out. I wonder if my Gshock one will work?
I own several Casio watches, and was buying them from the late 70s when I was a young teenager , now nearly 58 yrs old , and despite everyone singing this models praise, it’s one I don’t like and would never own , I’m not sure why , just can’t stand this model , subjective things watches , cheers shane uk 🇬🇧
