If you have a chronic illness, you’ve got inflammation. Inflammation is often hidden or silent, something that we can’t see or feel, but manifests itself as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, depression, and more. Typically, inflammation has been raging inside for a while before you even notice there’s anything wrong. The three biggest drivers of inflammation are all lifestyle factors-gut health, diet, and chronic stress.
In this episode of my new Masterclass series, I am interviewed by my good friend and podcast host, Dhru Purohit, about inflammation, what’s causing it, and how to reduce it. We discuss the critical component of gut health and how 60-70% of our immune system is in our gut, as well as tests to identify inflammation in the body, foods to avoid, and the importance of restful sleep.
Dhru Purohit is a podcast host, serial entrepreneur, and investor in the health and wellness industry. His podcast, Dhru Purohit Podcast, is a top 50 global health podcast with over 30+ million unique downloads. His interviews focus on the inner workings of the brain and the body and feature the brightest minds in wellness, medicine, and mindset.

For #1 u can eat sauerkraut bc it's packed with probiotics and it'll help balance that microbiome. It's really very important after you've taken antibiotics bc bad bacteria grows much faster than good bacteria in ur gut. Antibiotics kill ALL bacteria, both good and bad, & the bad grows back first...makes u feel like complete crap.

Let's not forget that mental health and the stress response mind to body is actually the beginning of kicking this whole thing off. Resentments, regrets, anger, self pity, victim trips, etc....start there first and see the body change. The food choices and all other things I believe are symptoms of the mental/emotional and belief systems most of the time. People don't want to sit in their skin, they are running from themselves, their past, and their life. That has to be addressed first. -Nyla Cione.

The reason they do not want to sit in their own skin (mental health) is because their brains are not optimal. Getting your brain to be optimal is a function of nutrition and exercise

The reason some people bounce rather than sink is they have Jesus in their lives. I have been through so many traumas and if I were to look at them I would sink. Instead I look at Jesus and know I am not alone, I then have strength to carry on and a reason for my sufferings …..to join them to Jesus’s sufferings and offer them for the glory of God and the salvation of souls. He then heals me and each trauma is a lesson. The reason I add this is that food is Gods pharmacy, but it’s not the whole story❤ You need faith in the one true God as well !!!

Beginning around 9:30, while discussing how stress arising from social negativity is a driver of inflammation, Dr. H says "nobody knows how to train their brain." He then says such training is the subject of another podcast. Learning to regulate one's feelings towards others is also the subject of all the world's great religions (and, I'm sure, many of the smaller ones), along the lines of "Love thy neighbor as thyself."

Interesting conversation , but I think the bigger picture that seems to be overlooked is that industry in every era was optimized for profits and not for human well-being and sustainablity. We can be euphemistic about it, but it is the overarching truth. Given the scape monopolies that control healthcare, media , data and food industries are systems will have a hard time to break out of realigning and reflecting priorities steeped in well-being.

Great information. Surprised you didn't mention the importance of knowing your foundational genetic makeup because it starts there even for inflammation. If you're predisposed to chronic inflammation at the gene root level and then stack on poor diet and stressors, you're setting up the perfect storm for autoimmune disorders. Knowing where and what variants are causing or contributing to issues allows you to better address (and counter) them.

I have UC but was allergic to the traditional treatment so then got given immune suppressants steroids but quite quickly they stopped working without increasing the dose. So decided no I didn’t want to keep to those. Went though years of trouble and pain then recently realised that food tolerance to fibre can be built back up gradually. I learnt that 10 years after my diagnosis on You tube! No one ever spoke to me about this. So now I do plant based diet. I know a lot of people will think they are already eating like that. I thought I was eating healthy until I really understood what a plant based diet is.
So no gluten or even gluten free foods. For me I am just focusing on root vegetables not tomatoes or courgettes or egg plant and no potatoes no eggs and lactose free cheese.
So now plant based means getting vegetables every day not just veggies on the side.
Once they are your main and only food then your peelings you recycle will increase like 3 times. I realise now I never really ate just a plant based diet and I don’t think we really know what plant based means. It takes a lot of input each day you got to make sure you got enough veggies for the next few days. I eat apples kiwis and tangerines and madjool dates and eat seeds and nuts. So I just recently changed to eat like this so I know it takes time to build up my healthy gut bacteria and I really think I will need to stay eating like this for a long time but as I like the tastes of what I eat I feel lucky I can enjoy my food which I haven’t been able to do when my UC has been at its worst. I feel now that I am moving in a healthy way. I am not cured yet but hoping in the future I will get to a better place.

(Harry here) I'm dealing with a bad hip and I know that inflammation is causing most of the pain. I'm familiar with a lot of the information you've talked about in this video and I'm going to try and turn it up a bit to see if it might help with a little relief until they can get in there and fix itr. I'm not real happy about how the hospitals are not letting your loved ones to come into the hospital and be with you during stays. I was hoping to hold off on doing the operation in hopes of the restrictions being relaxed. I can't see going into the hospital alone and dealing with this alone. We all need our families for recuperation. I was wondering what other people's thoughts are on the current situation and dealing with loved ones in hospitals. If I could control more of the inflammation, I believe I could hold off a bit longer but sometimes the pain is just to much.

Hey there, I'm just a health junky with no personal experience with hip pain but had beginning arthritis and edema in ankles. I can assure you that ELIMINATING SUGARS and STARCHES and ALCOHOL will eliminate inflammation. You'll start to see results very quickly but it takes a little bit more time to overcome insulin resistance which is actually the source of the problem. After a year I feel like a new person, fresh and energetic and NO PAIN. It's like I can feel my veins are clean now :) Now if I cheat for a day, instantly the next morning the puffiness is back. Get clean again, puffiness is gone. So I would just suggest that you not "turn it up a bit" but rather - go FULL STEAM AHEAD with a commitment to do everything Dr. Hyman tells you to do (and my favorite Keto experts Dr Eric Berg and Dr. Sten Ekberg). Also - there are physical therapists and chiropractors on youtube who have published videos on surgery being the LAST RESORT. They prescribe specific movements to promote healing along with diet changes. (My favorites are Dr. John Bergman and Bob&Brad Physical Therapists - "6 big lies about hip pain". Use your own power to reverse the situation - you can do it if, every minute of every day, you just CHOOSE a proper diet over pain and traumatic surgery! Best wishes for a strong 2022 !! :)

      Hi Harry! 👋
If you decide to take Turmeric...Make certain to get a full blood panel, including vit D, vit B12 and inflammation markers. Turmeric can lower B12 count... a bit.
Also, anyone who cuts out meat will, unfortunately, also cause thier B12 to lower significantly.
      Just a heads up.

My take away was how we need tests to understand the causes of the inflammation, especially the silent killers. I have family who often say I don't need tests or devices to measure "I just listen to my body", but Hyman emphasized causes are uncovered by diagnostics, checking additional blood biomarkers, sleep study for apnea, tests for heavy metals, etc.

Do you have Home Economics as a compulsory subject for secondary school students?
There are several studies that show the importance of practical nutritional education:
If you learn children about healthy nutrition and how to make tasty food from scratch, they are more motivated to make their own food, make good lunches to take with them to studies, and generally, live a more healthy lifestyle.
I have worked as a HE teacher for over a decade in both Finland and Sweden and working with a research project concerning education in nutrition, health, sustainability and private economy.

I am sorry, you had that experience. I have not been to see him but what I know is that the principle he is promoting is true. Inflammation is a killer so if you work on your inflammation with or without his help you will feel better. This requires a change of lifestyle. It is not an every other day routine. There is no room for cheat days. If is not a half in and half out routine. It is a lifestyle change which involves more than your diet. You will have to also look at your relationships, your sleep habits, exercise routine, the information you feed your mind. It is a whole life change and the full responsibility is on the individual. The only help anyone can offer them is guidance. They have to consistently do the heavy lifting and it is not an overnight wonder. You can get some relief in a short time frame of a few weeks but you have to be in for the long haul. You have to educate yourself on the topic of inflammation in the body and drive your own recovery. TH-cam has a lot of other proponents of this theory.
I encourage persons not to turn their backs on the principle but to educate themselves on the principle and make the necessary changes in their lifestyle.
