    I've been doing transcription, in one form or another, for a long time now. The last freelance place I worked for was Verbal Ink. They seem to have a lot in common with the Rev model with regard to jobs, pay, etc. Trouble is, I was working my butt off and not really making much money. I decided to try medical transcription and purchased an online course through Career Step (not plugging them, just saying). They offered job placement after graduation and I was employed 2 weeks after graduating (and yes, I mean employed, not independent contractor). Long story short, I've been making a good, living wage with full-time medical transcription work ever since. If you just want a little something on the side, places like Verbal Ink and Rev will definitely fit the bill. If you're trying to make a living, you might want to consider investing in an accredited medical transcription course. Just my 2 cents.

    • @meadmaker4525
      @meadmaker4525 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@SamSam-qu6wu - A quick place to start would be something like Rev.com or Verbalink.io
      You can apply on their website, take whatever mock tests they have to determine your grammar, typing and formatting skills, and go from there. Most places like this pay weekly based on your production. It's not great money, but it's a lot better than nothing.
      As for equipment, you'll need a decent computer, headphones, and a foot pedal (the Infinity USB foot pedal controllers are pretty much the standard nowadays). Of course, you'll need word processing software on your computer, too, such as Word, etc.
      If you want to get into medical transcription, you'll have to find and complete a course online before anyone will consider hiring you. I went through Career Step, but there are others. The course costs money, so if you're in a financial bind after having lost your job, you'll want to think about this carefully. It'll also take some time to complete, usually 4-6 months part time, or half that full time. After graduating, most courses offer job placement services to help you get started.
      Hope this helps! Best of luck to you! :-)

    I have a very serious point to make. When transcribing the person has to listen to the audio, then process that audio, then type the audio. The process of doing those 3 steps slow down the typing speed. Hearing audio is slower to process than seeing words when it comes to typing speed. I always feel frustrated about this and wonder why a fast typing speed is required? I prefer to edit a transcribed audio by using a speech-to-text platform first. I can edit it faster that way than to type it from scratch. I was recently denied work in my field and have transportation problems in cold weather so I might just dive into this again head-on and hope for the best.

    Thank you so much for this very informative video! I am interested in this as a PT job, but I’ve been a little frustrated with some of the prerequisites. I have worked most of my adult life as a medical editor for publishing companies and I have an undergrad degree in English. I also completed 1 year of medical school about 20 years ago. I have an excellent resume when it comes to medical terminology/knowledge and the English language. Unfortunately I became very sick a few years ago and now I am on medical disability. I feel I am recovering well enough now to start getting back into the work force at least part time, and working from home would be ideal for me. In fact, I love editing and human medicine so much I am extremely anxious to work again even if only part time. I looked at the Career Institute program and it seems very redundant for me, not to mention a bit pricey. I already know anatomy, physiology, neurology, and many other advanced medical sciences. Additionally, I have worked as an editor for more than 30 years (with graduate level English and Publishing courses every couple of years to keep up my skills and confidence level). I guess I’m just curious if you had any advice for me. Is there ever a way to test out of a medical transcription program? I figured it couldn’t hurt to ask 😊 Thank you for taking the time to give us all some employment tips!

      Hi. A foot pedal allows you to stop/start an audio file with your foot as opposed to having to type and control the audio with your fingers.

      Appen is great if you know a foreign language, pizza delivery from 5-9pm also pays very well but I think in most states it's a 16 minimun age. 😬 just make sure you drive well and If you can't drive then maybe working inside a store would be better . It's not worth having an accident and then having your insurance go up especially when you're just starting out.

    As someone who has worked in the digital forensics field I find it incredibly troubling when I see a company insist that you use a Google product of any kind as a condition of employment with them. There's a reason why Google offers companies their product with a clause that insists that they are the only browser/email/GPS etc. that they use. They do this for the same reason that they've written contracts with most of the major universities (do parents know that their children are now required to create gmail school account?), have purchased the WAZE GPS app, has a 33.3% interest in a DNA company (23andMe) and so much more. They do this as a way of gathering as much information on as many people as they possibly can. Now their latest attempt is to get companies such as TranscribeMe to insist that the only way that a person can work for them is if they use their Google Chrome browser as well. Isn't it odd to most people that TranscribeMe doesn't give their workers a choice of at least 1 other browser? Well, that's why-which is why I think I'll pass. There are plenty of other companies that are willing to allow us to use the browser of our choice.

    Angie, I found this video to be very informative, and professional. One question, do most of these companies require you to take a typing test? If so what is considered a good typing speed because I think I need to hone up on my skills.

    • @AngieNelson
      @AngieNelson  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. I think every company requires passing of a test. The minimum you will likely see is 60 wpm with zero errors. Some of the better-paying jobs look for 65+.

    What is the use of foot padel ? Can we start work without it ?

    • @AngieNelson
      @AngieNelson  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      A foot pedal allows you to stop and start an audio file without having to move your hands to use your mouse or keyword combinations. It can greatly increase your speed. You can certainly get started without one. Best of luck!

      Each person's text expander preference will be different based on the type of files and companies you are transcribing for. The words you would want to set up expanders for would be phrases that are commonly used in your files and words that trip up your speed.

    What benefit would there be to signing up with an online transcription school? The cost seems high. Your thoughts.

    • @AngieNelson
      @AngieNelson  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Shirley. It depends on the training. Medical transcription, for example, requires formal training in most cases. Obviously, you need to learn medical terminology, etc.
      For general transcription, training isn't necessary. The exception might be if you are wanting to start a transcription business. In that case, I would make sure the training you choose includes information on marketing, contracts, etc.

    I'm applying at Rev.com because a friend tried it and said it was ok. Funny thing is, my computer got hung up during the last part of the application process, where you do a sample transcription! It wouldn't rewind for me. Anyway they offered an email address for assistance so I sent out an SOS to them. I wouldn't be surprised if they conclude that I wouldn't be a good candidate, even though I think I would! We'll see. Thanks for your video.

      Well I didn't make the first cut. Apparently only 12% of applicants do. I may try again. I think I probably didn't give myself enough time to really soak up the rules, anxious to give it a try. It was an interesting topic in any case.

      A lot of medical transcription companies do require 2-3 years of transcription experience. There may be a couple to look into, however. Try nThrive, M Modal, StenoMed and Ubiquis.
