After being settled in the late 1700s and contributing significantly to the growth of the state of Vermont, Rutland has a long and illustrious history. The Rutland Railroad Museum, the Vermont Marble Museum, and the Chaffee Art Center are just a few of the city's institutions and sites that highlight this past. Rutland has many leisure options in addition to its historical and natural attractions. While the city itself offers a number of parks and sporting facilities, the adjacent Green Mountains offer hiking, skiing, and other outdoor activities. Overall, Rutland is a tiny, hospitable city with a strong feeling of community, a rich cultural history, and a welcoming atmosphere.
