I have always loved Annie Lennox voice. There is something so surreal about it. It really takes you to another place. I would be nervous too if I was performing in front of someone that I adored. Heck when I auditioned for All State choir the first time I broke out into hives. So I understand. I have always loved sting and also when he was with The Police. IMO, you couldn't do enough of Annie Lennox, she is the best female singer in my lifetime (and I am a senior). Others are also great, but Lennox is at the top of the list.
Annie is so unique and forgiving . When Dave and Annie left the Tourists was in my opinion a life changer. I know this lady has a blinding solo career but without the start with Dave it would have taken so much more time for her to achieve what she has i think? Wonderful upload, cheers Fil.
Gotta give her credit. She is a beautiful woman and she could have used her looks and the usual cheese cake photos to advance her career. Being such a strong woman, she chopped her hair off and made it on her talent. Favorite song: Why.
What a very interesting video ! I learned a lot : even if I don't know anything about these technical aspects, you explain everything so well ! I only know that I am obsessed with Annie Lennox's voice since 40 years or more and now I learned a bit more about this wonderful uniqueness. She's born with the perfect pitch, what a gift !!! Thank you for this analysis. By the way I think that Sting's face expresses concentration and emotion !
Fil, I appreciate how you explain why great singers are in fact amazing and the choices they make when performing a song. I like the song by both of them. Annie's interpretation is so different and lovely. Sting's performance is amazing. It's one of my favorites by him. They are both supremely talented.
Thanks again for another great analysis. Annie Lennox has a very powerful voice & quite a range. I found it interesting that she doesn't sing with hardly any vibrato. Loved her when she was in the group "Eurythmics" in the 80's before going solo.
I love unique musicians - makes their musical output so memorable and long lasting, and Annie is up there as one of the best. Fantastic singer. Talking of 'signature' vibrato - Gary Moore! Greatly missed guitarist.
No More I Love You is such a complex song and Annie nails it!! Its an incredible song - I can't really think of anyone one today who sing it as.well. She sounds as good "a capella" as she does with the music! Her performance of Into The West gives me chills every time!
Thanks, Fil! Annie is other worldly. She is so creative and fearless. No More I Love You came off a great LP. I've got to stop listening to you, though. I'm always saying, "bang on." now:-). Sting has a very distinguishing voice and a great talent too.
I remember hearing Sweet Dreams for the first time. I was about 20 and immediately fell in love with Annie's voice. I thought she had the sexiest tone ever. She will always be special to me.
Oh boy, I couldn't click fast enough for this one!bvIsolating her vocal makes her sound like an abstract painting. Or, even better, like the angels in Giotto's Lamentation.
Annie Lennox has one of the most spellbinding voices in all of contemporary music. And Sting ain't that bad either :-) Thanks Fil for another brilliant analysis.
Annie Lennox has a really haunting quality to her voice. Love it. Funny you brought it up Fil, I noticed many times that Sting “cuts off” vocal phrases. To me that is like a trademark for him. He is so enjoyable to listen to. Thank you for another awesome analysis! 🙂👍🏻P.S. Question, are we now saying “vocal lines never lie”? Just wondering. LOL 😂
Annie has such a lovely and pristine voice. I was bought and paid for with Sweet Dreams! Between the music, her voice and that eclectic video - like everyone just hangs out with their farm animals in the field. Meanwhile, you know Dave is coding on the computer, because typing would have been too normal. Great video. You could see her nervousness on her face.
Another great analysis. There is a live performance that Sinead O'Connor did in Chile of "Nothing Compares to You" that in my humble opinion is nothing short of emotional genius. She sounds incredible (I believe it was 1980). Would be an interesting analysis. Thanks for doing these, Fil!
I actually recently saw “ Walking On Broken Glass “ . I was shocked to see John Malkovich ,Hugh Laurie. Her voice is amazing. Very different and unique. ❤️ .

I would love it if you would analyze Sara Bareilles. To me she is the total package. Great voice, great songwriting. She records, plays piano, does Broadway. Her song “She Used To Be Mine” is so heart wrenching. She can really tell a story.
That face that he pulls during her performance isn't offense that she's messing up his song, it's emotional involvement in the tragedy which she's expressing with her voice.
A very nice job, professional and detailed. For full disclosure, I must admit that despite their sonic excellence, neither vocalist is on my list of favourite singers. A singer who I would love to see you dissect, one for whom there are many live versions available to compare the album version against, is Leonard Cohen (as long as the chosen song is NOT "Hallelujah." Hi Fil, Over the last few days I thought of some Artists You don't seem to have Analysed, I'd Love to see. Rick Price who's originally from Queensland, Australia. He wound up immigrating to America and moving to Nashville to further His career. A Singer who does Reaction Videos checked out His song "Not Day Goes By". Btw, if you go back to the first couple of albums by the Eurythmics, or their uncredited appearance on a Throbbing Gristle album, I believe that you will find that Annie had that hard attack on many more songs than she did later on. On the most recent recordings of Annie's voice that I have heard, it sounds like she has blown out her high end. I'd call it The Joni Mitchell Effect but I don't know whether Annie smokes or not. Lemmy abused his vocal cords for a lifetime and still sang to damn near the very end.
these vocal videos make me realize that singing is a musical instrument, just like guitar, sax.... You have to work on your tone, vibrato, attack, etc just like a guitarist has to.

John is out here somewhere!
Sting always looks grumpy when he's focused, like he's got really bad hemorrhoids. Rick beato's interview is a great example.
Yes, the beginning of that interview is almost painful to watch.
Don't know if it is true. But I once read an article that Sandy Denny did not have much, if any vibrato.
these vocal videos make me realize that singing is a musical instrument, just like guitar, sax.... You have to work on your tone, vibrato, attack, etc just like a guitarist has to.

By the way, he didn’t do that cutting off. It was pretty good. Yes, he drew out his notes last night. The heck was he doing here?
