"I do not know how to help him!" The grief and frustration of a parent dealing with a situation without any real precedent or guidance, caught in that twilight zone between 'custom' and truth.
Bortus always has such a stoic face, as if he could take on any enemy and never flinch. seeing the man crack just tugs at the heart, the desperation in his voice and his facial expressions even under layers of prosthetics, Bravo to the actor.
Funny enough what came mind was when Gordon disguised 🥸 as a krill call him out and he immediately announced himself and was ready to save his captain and crew
I don't know who directed this episode, but the choice to put the camera on their faces so close, especially to Bortus, and let the actors go to work, was brilliant. They gave it everything in this scene, and after a few seasons of struggling with the choice made in season one, it all just bursts out of him in such a relatable way. Perfect.
It was an especially risky move because of the heavy prosthetic makeup It could've looked really cheesy if done wrong but it was handled beautifully and the actors did a masterclass in emotional depth and expression

My dream crossover is between Peter Macon and Michael Dorn. Love to see Bortus and Worf sharing a screen, a glass of Klingon bloodwine, and share parental tips about raising their kids.
While we'll never see such a crossover (due to licensing issues, etc), having Michael Dorn cameo on the show, maybe as a Moclan sympathetic to Bortus, Klyden and Topa (as opposed to one who is... well, opposed... to them), would be awesome to see! We've had many other Star Trek actors on the show, and even had Jonathan Frakes direct a couple of episodes (and apparently wants an on-screen role too)... so there's no reason why it couldn't happen if we ever get a season 4.
He did help topa he gave him the first step in the right direction to figuring out what he wanted to be . While yes it sometimes has to be a mess to file through bortus did what a good father should do by letting his child decide
While I agree that it is good for parents to allow their children to decide *some* things for themselves, there is certainly a time and place for such things. Children very often don't know enough to make good decisions for themselves, and at a young age shouldn't be expected to. No five year old should be making life altering decisions for themselves. Fifteen isn't even truly adequate for such decisions without guidance from someone actually interested in their long-term success in life and not pushing detrimental choices due to ideology. Of course this episode was referring to people pushing sex change operations upon children, which frankly is barbaric and criminal. No one should be opting for elective life altering surgeries until well into adulthood. Certainly no child or even teenager should be. In the case of this episode of course, we're dealing with someone who was unnaturally altered in infancy simply wanting to restore what was taken. We're *not* talking about an elective permanent bodily alteration *to* something unnatural, as we're dealing with in real life today. That distinction is critical in arguing the morality of a minor making such a decision. Topa in the story is electing to be what she was naturally born, not choosing to try to become something unnatural other than what she actually is. Children choosing for themselves can be beneficial for positive development, but only when it's something suitable for the time and place. No responsible parent would allow their child to eat nothing but candy and cake for their meals, no matter how much the kid might want to. We recognize that it's ridiculous and very unhealthy, where the child wouldn't. That dichotomy is present in a plethora of other potential choices made either by or for children.
@@SeastallionI don't think most people even In a real world sense are arguing full on surgery. What people are championing is the right to even make those steps which traditionally only happen after years of discussion and preparation The conversation usually gets tainted by the logic of something being "unnatural" but it's usually by people who have little regard for the child let alone there ability to sway the any part of the discussion It's like the people who say a zygote is alive and enforce there rules but the moment a child exist they provide no assistance no structure the child is born so they are left to suffer A child at least has the right to be heard to have that discourse instead of there existence be politicized and mocked by strangers who could care less about there suffering Actually Surgery comes at the appropriate time

This episode is near and dear to me. Years ago I was in a toxic and an emotional abusive relationship. Anyway you slice it Klyden was an abuser. When Brotus breaks down it struck home. I've been to that level of helplessness. The performance was so well done it brought me to tears.
Bortus gave Topa the password. Topa was directed to a file by Kelly that would reveal the gender change he was put through. Bortus found out that he'd seen the file and supplied the password. They both wanted Topa to know, against the wishes of Klyden and Moclan culture.
Yeah that should not matter. TOPA HAD EVERY SINGLE GODDAMN RIGHT TO LIVE HER LIFE AS THE GENDER SHE WAS BORN AS. I swear to god I HATE the Moclans with a burning passion now that I realized what sexist idiots they truly are. How the absolute FUCK they stayed in the Union as long as they did with their CLEAR disregard for what is (or absolutely SHOULD be) Union laws on gender identity is a complete mystery to me.
Bortus saw what his child needed and he didn't think he did what was best for the child. in this clip he sees his child injured and goes to town on the monster who hurt her. He may not be a perfect parent but hes a good father
In the first few seasons I wasn’t all that big a fan of Bortus and the Moclans. They just seemed like a less ingesting krogan and Klingon. After this season I still don’t like the Moclans but bortus has finally grown on me. I see less of a emotionless rock, and a father that despite his flaws All he wants is the best for his child, despite what his culture says is best.
You know, Bortus really reminds me of G'Kar from Babylon 5. A character that at first was kind of written as comic relief, and goofy, and fairly 2 dimensional. But over the course of the show, with good writing, and fantastic work from the actor, becomes an emotional powerhouse for the show.
@@jeremydale4548 don’t know if it’s hypocritical, wrong certainly, but if you apply the same metrics to others as you do to yourself, then it’s not hypocrite, to give Klyden’s perspective on the situation(please don’t crucify me,I’m just giving more context to this😅): someone was born with a culturally reviled “deformation” and although they went through surgery to remove it they’re still deeply disturbed by knowing it so they double down on their hostility against said deformation and try to spare their child from going through the same trauma, in their heads they’re doing what they wanted someone to do for them(notice how their first reaction isn’t to attack Topa, but to deny and then console him, because in his head Topa would be ashamed of it)
I believe part of why it hit Klyden so hard, is that Topa was like himself, born female but changed to male as an infant. But Topa found the courage to face her truth and the scorn from her society, and make herself who she really is. Klyden never could.
Look everybody blames Klyden but Klyden grew up knowing the truth and all his neighbors, family and probably strangers knew. Everyone knowing the she wasn't a real boy might have made him grow up being teased, mocked or bullied. So Klyden probably views the secret as something she would have wish she grew up with.
