    Work continues on my 1985 Porsche 924 NA Restoration project.
    In this episode I'm finally done with front axle, restoring and rebuilding my front suspension and brakes. I clean, sandblast, mask, rust convert where needed and paint most of the parts. One coat of epoxy primer, followed by 3 coats of filler primer. Then I wet sand few parts with 600 and 800 grit sandpaper. Some of them are too pitted from rust and can't be smoothed out with wet sanding. Then 3 coats of base color and finally 3 coats of clear.
    Zinc gold electroplating few more parts and using cold blue method to treat unpainted parts. Parts that are missing or worn out are replaced with brand new ones.
    I won't be returning these nice looking parts to the car until I take care of car's body and paint.
    Next up is rear suspension and brakes. Stay tuned!

    Great work! Why not just have strut housings, springs and sway bar powder coated?

      @@jeffhammond8969 I'm quickly running out of space. Once I'm able to get bigger garage that would be great. The room I'm doing painting in is actually my office that is not finished yet... so I'll have even less space in the future.

      @@RestorationApprentice space is always an issue! I'm sure I will run into that once I start restoring my 944. Lots of skills to learn. Concentrating on getting the 968 ready for daily use right now

    That’s a really nice job, lots of work, but worth it for the results. I have just finished my struts, I plan to clean/paint the steering knuckles this weekend. Where did you get your brake fitting kit from? I cleaned up and reused my spring plate and pins, but new would be much better. The ones I have seen for sale are around £40, which is too much for what they are ! VW Heritage Parts are offering them at £10, but don’t have them in stock :(
    There’s photos of my restoration on Instagram if you are interested.

    • @RestorationApprentice
      @RestorationApprentice  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, Chris! Yeah, it was a lot of work but very rewarding. I got my kit from Autodoc but it was a cheap kit and doesn't come with little plastic sliders. Before I return them on my car, I'll but Ate kit as it's only one that get you those sliders. Plate and pins are definitely overpriced (924s and 944 spring and plate is 2-3x cheaper) but I had no other choise... Got them from Frazerparts. I'm definitely interested, gice me your username and I'll follow you there.

      That’s the Porsche Tax I guess :(. With care you can make new sliders from 2mm Teflon sheet, available from eBay. I don’t *think* you can buy them anymore. My Instagram is Chrismadge143

    • @RestorationApprentice
      @RestorationApprentice  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chrismadge7292 It only comes with original Ate kit part number 11.0441-4802.2. Thanks for the tip, I might try teflon sheet as I only need sliders. Following you there!

    Great work!!! I am looking to do the same job this winter. I plan to shot blast and powder coat the components though.
    Not sure what colour to do calipers!!
    Question: rear wheel arch inside, should the be body colour or black ???

    • @RestorationApprentice
      @RestorationApprentice  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! Yeah, powder coating is even better option. I'm not sure how they are originaly as mine are really dirty but I'll do them in black. I plan on stripping all old paint and rubber then apply epoxy primer and black raptor liner over that.

    What is that thing you put on the unpainted surfaces at the end and why? Anyway, nice job!

    • @RestorationApprentice
      @RestorationApprentice  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! It's a process called "cold bluing". It protects the metal from rusting and make it black. And those are mating surfaces that are not supposed to be painted. Some people do paint them, but I wanted to be on a safe side.

      I did, from Porsche. Can't remember the exact price but around 80 euro each.
