So many good, so many brilliant pianists round the world, some with dazzling techniques who play with a wild rush that obscures the musicality of the piece. Sokolov stands out for his sensitive, poetic interpretations, for the value he gives to each note in its due place
In due difference, Mozart marked this movement "Allegro Assai" (exceedingly quick) for good reason. This music is not meant to be poetic, it is meant to be frantic and anguished.
Sokolov fills the space with music that captivates you. Sublime!
Sokolov brings out the operatic aspect of this sonata - the song fullness, the dramatic effects. He finds more beauty and emotional depth in this piece than any other performer.

İn fact when Mozart is played too fast İ get a feeling if "let's get it over with". A slower tempo makes the music more penetrating.
Not slow at all! To try to give the impression of allegro assai to the opening material forces the busier parts to become impossible and absurd.
I played this sonata for my diploma and was told to take this movement faster but I love this tempo as it enhances its beauty.

The first edition for this movement reads "Allegro assai". It's only the copy giving the usually performed "Molto allegro agitato"
Many excellent details in this recording which are usually lost/overheard.
One of my favourite pieces of Mozart, and it's maybe because the interpretation is just marvelous and suit perfectly to the piece. It's a great work done here by the pianist 👏🏾👏🏾

It's my first listen to the third movement. Now all the others "interpretation" will sound too fast. Cause for me this is the perfect tempo.
+Davide Luciano But it lacks the breathlessness and anxiety that is portrayed in quick tempo.
he starts slower than usual, but he picks up the tempo soon after and is in fact pretty much on par with many versions. I love hearing different approaches if they bring a new light to a work. Which Sokolov rarely fails to do.

actually beethoven’s pathetique sonata is very similar to this one. it’s even in the same key and pathetique’s second movement uses a melody from the second movement of this sonata

In the realm of classical music there tends to be two kinds of pianists. Firstly, the ones where it is all about them and secondly, those that let the music speak for itself. Sokolov belongs to the former.

Исполнение произведений Моцарта требует особого туше. Это всегда было аксиомой. Этому, так называемому, пианисту это неведомо. Это барабанная дробь, а не Моцарт. Дожили, нравится даже акцент на окончании фразы. Такое отношение к исполнению Моцарта просто варварство, иначе не назовёшь.

Where is the "Allegro assai"? Didn't Mozart know what "Allegro assai" meant? I see more and more an artist turned towards himself, allowing himself whatever he wants, and sometimes looking for ways to provoke the listener. Sometimes I almost feel as if he was joking. Look, I absolutely love Glenn Gould, but what he did with the Appassionata deserves not a single word. For years I've been saying that Sokolov seems to have chosen a way in which his playing is more and more about "me, me, me". The opposite of Sviatoslav Richter, Gilels, Arrau...
The same with the "Hammerklavier".
He squeezes out poor Beethoven until there's no more Beethoven, then he fills the empty room with his poor soul...I'd prefer Beethoven's (or Mozart's) soul.....
In my opinion he's the most overrated pianist today.

How is it even possible you are tied to one conception of the piece, even more, projecting what you think is Beethoven's and Mozart's soul (okay, of course there are measures and mathematics, but is Sokolov really so far away from the jist of it?) into pieces you hear? Of course, some of the grand classical musicians of the past would also say - the way we / I play it now is the only way possible, the way it is written is absolutely allowing only minimal exceptions and is the hardest to achieve. Is that so? Someone in the video plays piano for almost his entire long life, and he should not seek his way of transferring what is written in the score? And who is a pianist or in fact any musician to serve such petty comments? Of course it is him conveying the essence, who else could it be? Please, refer me to other pianists you heard live in concert and can reach the standards of Claudio Arrau, Emil Gilels or Sviatoslav Richter.
Is this only because he is not following the tempi? Or what does this comment so broadly apply to?
@@vladotepesh He has become increasingly narcissistic about everything. He could have played this without 2 or 3 tempi and choose the right tempo consistent throughout in this wonderful Mozart Sonata. I marvelled at Sokolov's tone and his super technique, but less today with his overall musicianship. It's a harsh assessment of one of the greatest pianists alive.I have heard him play 4/5 times in London. Some wonderful playing , but it began to losing spontaneity. That's the word- spontaneity.

I’ve known Sokolov personally since the 70s, and there is not a narcissistic bone in him, let me assure you. He is a concert pianist, whose each performance takes all his energy, drains him completely, and yet he always obliges his audience with extras. He chose this road not for the glory or fame, but because of his calling. And that’s why his mentor Emil Gilels predicted his success.
