Sokolov is one of the best pianists in the world . He is a pianist with an extraordinary technique , his musical intelligence, his style of interpretation is extraordinary ! Sokolov is one of my favorite pianists ! I LOVE GRIGORY SOKOLOV ! I LOVE CHOPIN ! I LOVE DEUTSCHE GRAMMOPHON ! I LOVE CLASSICAL MUSIC !
The lackadaisical beginning, the tragic turn, the anger at an unfair world, the sorrow of things lost, the return to peace but with the knowledge that nothing will ever be the same, and a hopeful yet melancholic resolution -- I felt it all in this performance
Never have I been moved by this piece as I have by this interpretation. Listening to this, I was flooded with emotion and what what I've experienced. This was stunning for me.
Luke I love your interpretation so much. You have one of my favorite nocturne collections for sure, and I love how you play op.32 no.2. Your nocturnes all feel really clean to me. I don’t mean to say they are straightforward but rather they all posses what I love about the music.
A remarkable and rare performance at a surprising tempo, not easy to sustain, but in Sokolv's hands a truly unique interpretation of powerful musicianship! Bravo maestro!
out of this world!!: i was lucky enough to hear the same recital as the CD (sonata n.3, bagatelles and intermezzi) in bologna last summer. it really felt like he was playing every note for the first time, like he was discovering the music in front of me. i'm so lucky that this giant likes my town, i've already been able to hear him live 5 times: he's just perfect, with the hands of 25 year-old, the maturity and experience of a master, and the sheer joy in playing of a child. he's not only one of the greatest pianist to ever grace the instrument, but also the last apostle of the same russian school as Richter and Gilels, no one will ever be able to make the piano sing/vibrate quite like them. thanks DG for the great quality audio/video, i'd never heard this nocturne played so beautifully.
totally agree, listening to Sokolov (especially live) feels like being back in time, the sound he produces is a miracle more often than not. But hopefully the 'end' of this famous Russian school has not come yet - you should really listen to anything by Alexandra Dovgan. Although only being 13 or so she comes closest in sound, seriousness and 'musicality' to the great maestro. It's absolutely incredible, but actually she was honourfully pronounced by Sokolov himself as a (future) star, so no big surprise. I remember listening for the first time to some Rachmaninov Prelude played by her and I figured it was equal to Sokolovs performance, which really shocked me considering her age. Also her Beethoven is very mature and has no elements of showing off. So I'm very excited about her future and really do hope that she will keep up this attitude and good work...
This is simply a miracle ... A whole universe that comes to light page after page like a wonderful novel written through a simple ABA structure in just 7 minutes
Honestly his intro is the best I’ve heard. I don’t really like his mid section compared to Rubinstein’s. Don’t get me wrong it’s an extremely beautiful interpretation and I like the nuance and the difference in atmosphere he brings, but Rubinstein’s performance for me will always be #1. With that being said this is in my liked videos and will be a performance i will come back to to study when I learn this piece. Truly eloquent phrasing.
I keep a copy of the Nocturnes on my piano. At all times. It is THE 'manual' for any pianist. They change each time you play. That's because they become part of you. You see it here - tortuously in Grigory. This Nocturne is pulling him out of himself. He is performing who he is tonight. Any Nocturne - but for me all of them ...To choose one - for today..........say....13th in C Min pls.
Thanks for your comment. I must note that I still have a 12 inch 78 rpm shellack record of Horowitz playing three of these nocturnes (RCA, 1950). I played these when I was a little boy and they are unbelievable. They transcend Chopin's notation.
Has he ever performed in the U.S.? I’m in So Cal and would drive a distance to hear him…he’s definitely an iconoclast among pianists (in a good way). I don’t always agree with his interpretive approach to everything he plays, but I always respect it.
Why isn’t he commonly known along the top pianists, such as Kissin, Buniatishvili, Trifonov, Yuja Wang etc, his choice of repertoire, technique and musicality is simply fascinating!
He plays Bach and Schubert really good, but his Hammerklavier is a mess and his newest Mozart is simply not good. Some times ago he played a fantastic "Precipitato" from Prokofiev......His problem is, sometimes he's great, sometimes he's boring....
@@michaelschefold3299 there is no musician, who could be consistent in his/ her performances. As for romantics, Grigory needed to mature and become more sensitive to composers such as Chopin and Schubert. His latest interpretation of Klavierstücke is stupendous.
@@michaelschefold3299 Boring? Guess what? You are boring. You and your total praise of Yuja Wang. I laugh every time I read your "critique" of great, great musicians. But please, keep on writing Good Sir, it's free entertainment for everybody in here.
In a valiant effort into be musical, the Maestro takes liberty with a slow tempo, especially the middle f minor section. If one compares the 1950's Rubenstein performance, it shows the essential nature of how important tempo is. Chopin should never be dragged. When Maestro Sokolov brings the tempo up a bit it makes a tremendous difference. Of course his interpretation is his own and I must respect it.
Other performances of this make it sound like a carnival song covered in sticky caramel apple. Sokolov shows that it's a passionate longing on a hazy summer evening of the bygone carnival.
What other piece or pieces by Chopin would you like to see Sokolov perform?
Scherzo n3
Polonaise no. 2 op. 26
Nocturne Op.27 no. 2, Fantasie Op.49
Piano concerto No.1
Any Ballade would be phenomenal

YES. WHY ARE WE SCREAMING. SHUT UP DON'T THINK ABOUT IT

love the interpretation
To ShinigamoNolka-------
i FELT YOU in Chopin
02:51 I've never heard of such an interpretation. Fantastic!
Going to see Sokolov was the best concert of my life. Living legend, as they say
A not so obvious melody. only a great performer like him can achieve such a performance! Great and fantastic pianist. Thanks!!
I really don't know why, but, this interpretation became one of my favourites off all time in just 5 seconds, amazing. I'm speechless.
Not a single key left without its proper resonance. Wonderful performance.
Never have I been moved by this piece as I have by this interpretation. Listening to this, I was flooded with emotion and what what I've experienced. This was stunning for me.
A powerful interpretation...
I’ve been trying to find ur channel and you were in the comments. Thx!
@BiblicalyBuffDude Haha we meet again!
@Luke Faulkner You are great too.
You are a very good pianist and what is special about you, you are also a great composer. 👏🙂

So many different sounds, phrasing, voicing....what a unique talent. Simply unique in everything he plays.
The way he rings the right handed melody so powerfully over the already powerful left is incredible.
What could you possibly expect from Sokolov but perfection.....
A remarkable and rare performance at a surprising tempo, not easy to sustain, but in Sokolv's hands a truly unique interpretation of powerful musicianship! Bravo maestro!
Perhaps Chopin,s best nocturne beautifully played with excellent timing.
Que maravilla de pianista.....un genio total....
SO UNIQUE!! I’ve never heard such a special type of grace put into this piece before! I’m in love
At last, a great man who can play at the desired tempo. This is the best version I've heard.

Just discovered him today bc i found a comment that said this pianist is similar to yunchan in many ways... and i love him already!
I have attended today to a concert of Mr. Sokolov in Spain. Great performance!!!
Absolument sublime! Des moments d'une intensité profonde et lumineuse! Bravo!
Speechless, let the music do the talking!
every pieces that play by Sokolov always contain a magnificent and beautiful meanings behind
Couldn't agree more!
Good
Grigory Sokolov, Martha Argerich, Daniel Barenboim- the last living legends of past era, they are still here.
Все эти прекрасные пианисты,но Григорий Соколов стоит особняком
The greatest performance of this Nocturne I've ever heard.
My God I wish I could play like that. It's my dream to play like that.. so free... so natural..
This is a stunning rendition. Draws all the emotional detail out of the piece. Love the quintuplets leading to the climax. What a great pianist.
Very light and peaceful and beautifully done with a sweet tender emotion!🎶🎵🌹🎭🎹👍❤️💛🖤
ゆっくりとしたテンポ。主旋律の音の美しさが際立ちますね。こんな物憂げな曲だったかしら?と思うくらい、いつもと違う曲のように感じました。素晴らしい演奏。

What I don't like about this middle section is that it's too slow.
I wouldn't say it's my favorite approach to this piece, but it's insanely intriguing
Well, what is there to say. He is just superb in everything he plays.
Best pianist alive. ❤️

This is so good!
although it's totally different to my favourite interpretation performed by Rafał Blechacz - i really like this one. So calming.
Semplicemente una fantastica lenta ma potente interpretazione .
2:25 Sokolov DEMANDS you hear each and every exquisite note

Thank you. Greetings from Poland. We stand with Ukraine. Stop Russian atrocities.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A little heavy emphasising the melody
I agree, although some of that is likely down to the piano being played. Very nice nevertheless.
In a hall is perfect, the problem of recordings....
It sounds the resonance from his touch is not reflected in the video
