Not gonna lie, they kind of ruined the design. In an attempt to differentiate their version from the original they slapped gaming related graphics decals on the shell and just made it look cheap. The clean device itself looks good, but with all the rubbish branding on it is a hard pass.
So, less ram, less battery, and worse software than the Ally X? This would have been really cool about 1.5 years ago if it was positioned against the OG Ally at a competitive price.
I was hyped that Acer joins the market because of their usual pricing being lower and quality satisfying... And this is a rather small sized handheld. However I believe it will be better for those who already own a x86 handheld to just wait until the next gen come out. Just not worth the small upgrades imo.
If it costs more than $399, it will probably be tough to sell. The only real difference here compared to others is the NPU (which is nearly useless for gaming as far as i know) and the 144hz which is kinda "meh" because the APU will have a hard time hitting such high framerates, not to mention the battery life impact and i'm not too hopeful for battery life on this device.
The 8840u may not be this way at the moment, but the idea with the AI crap is using it to make the chip run more efficiently. So I wouldn't discount that part of it completely. It is quite feasible in the future this battery will perform on par with the Ally X 80 Whr because of that chipset.
They could have had used the same ODM (Original Design Manufacturer) )firm for the handheld. This is done across a lot of manufacturers in the tech space especially in low end and mid end android phones globally.
The Terrans Force Handheld 5 with 16gb of ram and a 1tb storage is a grand from minixpc. I can’t imagine a faster Acer branded one selling for less than that. Unless they bought a serious quantity of product to get the price down. 🤷♂️
You know, I'm a bit surprised how this didn't happen sooner... people just don't get how prevalent this practice actually is. Not for portable gaming I mean, just electronics in general. In fact, I'd be a bit curious to check internals of all gaming portables to see if some are not just a case replacement deal. But I'm also plenty fine with stuff like that, particularly if it helps dropping prices. I'd personally get a Steam Deck myself... if it was available officially in my country. Since it's not, if you want a proper warranty and costumer support, you need to go for often overpriced options from other brands who do have an official local presence. And we need more options.
I don't think the HZ difference in the panels is what matters, is there actually anything else different about it?? Better contrast ratio? Better response time? Etc etc
I see matte plastic, my interest peaks. To all the "too late" comments, this is not a race, this is a market section that's growing. It would be like saying that a new company is too late in releasing a phone or a laptop, if there's something to offer, it might catch on, because the market is there.
I'm excited to see a handheld with a genuinely user replaceable full-size NVMe drive bay, for once I don't have to put quotes around user replaceable. Acer is known for quality budget hardware too, so I wouldn't be surprised if they hit that $700 mark without storage.
Unless Acer prices theirs VERY competitively, I don't see it beating what the ROG Z1E already offers. About the only thing it has going for it is how compact it looks compared to the Ally.
Your games can hit 144 hertz with lossless scaling. They can exceed 200 hertz & reach into the 300+ range. But at 144, you can set up a unit so that number runs consistently. So you get 144 fps at all times. The 144 number never deviates in either direction. It literally runs at exactly 144 fps indefinitely.
You'd think a company as large as Acer can afford to come up with something original... Unless they are buying that entire Chinese company, it's gonna feel awkward to have different brands using the same chasi
They could, but chances are it wouldn't be as good of a product as the Chinese company that has been doing it for years at this point. I am all for this being a stepping point for them to better R&D.
Hi thanks for the video it is nice. Can you use this as normal pc? Eg. Connect to external display or docking station with mouse and keyboard to use as your home pc, and whenever reqired unplug and take it with you? Since it has windows onboard I wonder if it fully utilizes the system features.
I really REALLY wish AMD would just add CXL support on these mobile chips so you can get a dGPU in a laptop, OR a 3rd channel of RAM on a handheld. there is so much GPU performance locked behind not enough bandwidth. Also, would help to push manufacturers to include more than 16GB of RAM as windows games dont handle shared VRAM very well, some wont see any performance differenec between 488MB of VRAM and 16GB of VRAM, others do see a massive difference espeically in the 1% and 0.1% lows caused by trying to purge assets from VRAM With a 192 bit memory bus the default would be 24GB allowing you to dedicate 8GB to the GPU, now other than having a 192 bit bus, dedicating VRAM doesnt actually make the GPU faster, but rather makes the game engine use the GPU properly. The dedicated VRAM and shared system RAM are the exact same speed, and some other OS's handle this much better than windows/games
Antec is doing a similar thing with the Aya Neo Slide. These Chinese companies turning into ODMs for bigger publishers/resellers like thisi s a good idea.
Terrans Force is a boutique brand like XMG, Eluktronics, or PC Specialist. E.g. they don't actually make these devices, they just resell a common oem one. They rebrand univil/tongfang laptops so my guess would be that the oem building this one maybe the tongfang as well

Had this launched around the same time the original Ally did.. this may of had a cult following by now. Terrible time to drop something with only 16gb ram
I am still looking for a good $500-ish range linux-based handheld that has better specs than the Steam Deck. however, I could just install Bazzite on anything, right?
I just prefer Steam Deck approach with 800P screen. I'd rather have a better quality native pixel view, than upscaled from lower res up to 1080P. I don't see the push for 1080P games that can't be run at their native resolution. But I notice little details like that, and many can't.
I would think it will be sucessful at $550 max. It would be even better at $450, but that probably won't happen. Acer probably makes the boards for Terrans force. Terrans force probably designed and spec'd the shell, buttons, screen, and layout of the board. Then, Acer had Terrans force rebrand the system and bought exclusivity of the Handheld 7 in larger markets like the US and Europe.
yeah, I also hope the price would be $550USD for the base model. I mean, Ayn did it with the Loki, aya neo is selling the flip for a similar price and the orange pi neo will cost $500USD. Acer being a mainstream company they can do it
Acer needs to hit a good price point with this if they want it to sell. Because they just don't have the same brand confidence as Lenovo and Asus. Despite Asus's spotty track record of customer support they are known as a top brand. Acer is known as a more budget brand with a cheaper quality and cost. So people are not likely to want to shell out $700+ for this from them. When that same amount could net them a steam deck OLED and games or a little more and they get an ally x or legion go.
actually acer sells pretty well because of their price strategy (however unrecognized) in China, so i won't be surprised to see a very good offer from them.
@@kris2501100 I didn’t say they didn’t sell well, they have always sold well because they are a budget brand. @RedMageGaming Read the reply again, Asus is not a "top" brand. Acer is also not a "budget" brand. You're like someone going into a Walmart, and thinking their house brand is a top brand, because it's all over the store, and a majority of their sales. That's Asus today.
Really, I don't care for the price point, but they need to be competitive. What I'm looking for is the customer service. Will it be done from Acer or from the OEM?? From Acer POV, they didn't spend a dime of R&R, they have an "already to use" gaming handheld machine. But for the repairs, hmm...
Tbh i rather wait for the next soc from AMD than buying an handheld today. And they need to come with more ram so we can give the gpu more ram without starving the os.
Original solid black design looks better. The new one looks like their aiming for an 8-year-old. At this time, the only thing that could convince me to buy another handheld pc would be the release of Lenovo Legion Go 2 (hopefully a slimmer and lighter design with better specs).
I haven't looked into the specs yet but this one seems more portable than the other handhelds but again why do we have these large bezels around the screen?? It makes the screen even smaller, what's wrong with this bezel trend still going on after all these years? Stop this immediately nobody wants less screen space.
I do not get why they do not put the price, this is the most generic handheld I have ever seen tbh, but the price is the game changer here, like the deck and Rog Ally that no one beat their prices, even the switch if it was 100 more it will be criticized, I can buy a moded one with a 128card for 160 $ in my local market , but the only reason is because it is cheap .

In my case, it has to be OLED. It's cool that Acer will have VRR and high refresh rate, but OLED is where it's at. Another thing is the battery life. Would be great if it lasted longer than Steam Deck. Third thing is... it's running Windows, and that will drag both performance and battery life down. was this reuploaded? having deja vu LOL
Can't wait for Valve to release their Steam OS, hopefully both battery life and performance on all other handhelds will go up.
