As a high handicap the 7 wood was the best club choice I ever made. I use it the most. It's easy to hit and can be used in almost any situation. You have to give it try if you have not already.
I went from a 2H and 3 iron to a 7 wood and extra wedge last year and was the best thing I've done for my bag in a long time. I'm a 0.5 and didn't have too much issue with the 3iron. But just can't compare to the booters that the 7 wood can produce out of damn near anywhere. Goes high, but not too high. Hell of a tool.
As someone who carried only a driver and 3 wood for 30 years, I learned that adding a 5 and 7 wood has made longer shots easier and golf more fun. The 3 and 4 iron are now in the retired club bag.
I joined the 7wood club a few years ago, my 3,4 iron are like yours retired, I take them to the range occasionally just to keep my swing with them. But when I play its definitely 7 and 5 wood. Last Sunday I was inches from an eagle putt, thanks to my 7w giving me a great second shot. I happily settled for birdie on a 520 yard par 5.
I have 3W and now 7W, but on fitting for the 7W hit a few 5W and I can see this replacing the 3W with a custom fitting. It went just as far but slightly easier to hit. Plus the Titleist model could have lie adjusted as well as loft.
So I am a high handicap and always looking to make the game easier for me. My irons are 6-PW. My woods are 3-5-7. I do also carry a 5h since I don’t have a 5 iron. Does this setup sound about right for a 61 year old 20 handicap?
@@barkermotorsports7101 that is a great setup if u have swingspeed for a 3 wood. if not I think your 5 wood will carry longer and possibly total longer too. In the end I live in Scandinavia, so it's always raining here anyway. Have u tried a 4 wood? is it much difference to a 3 wood?
I already have a 5w and 7w, but since I’m a short hitter, I’m gonna keep the woods and add a 4H for better gapping between my 5i and 7w. As mentioned, gotta know your numbers and understand your gapping needs, the type of courses you play, etc.
Another great installment. I'm definitely going the 7 wood next purchase to gap fill 4I to 3W. I just can't put a hybrid down and think anything good is going to happen as they just have "bad shot coming" written all over them. I just look down and ask "so what are you supposed to be?"
Been gaming a 3 Hybrid as the rough near me is thicker at times and the smaller sole allows me to chop down on it more. Also the lower apex is good not to be smashed by the wind in valleys/hilltops. Also it's been less powerful than by 5 wood keeping a nice 5i-3h-5w gap. Just need a 3w now to sort of complete the top end of the bay

Appreciate its not for everyone, but it’s a hybrid all day long for me. With the right setup, it gives you the chance to hit a shot like a 3 iron or the 7 wood.
Love my 7 wood, really easy to hit for a 200 yard shot. Super versatile, can be hit out of rough too. Can’t seem to hit it off the tee, just spins too much. Would you recommend carrying an 18 degree hybrid that would produce a lower ball flight off the tee? Would be useful for shots into wind
There were a lot of sales pitches in the early days of hybrids but the most common one was to use them as an iron replacement. But the truth was only Mizuno with their Fli-Hi and Tour Edge with their Iron woods actually made true iron replacements hybrids. Everyone else chased distance as their customers wanted that. So in almost every other brand you got a club that was easier to get in the air for most golfers compared to their long irons but a good club or three longer. That equals sales which is what matters to a manufacturer. Hybrids kept getting longer both in terms of distance and, unfortunately, shaft length until are about as difficult to hit consistently as a 5 or 7 wood so why not go with something (7 wood) that gets in the air even easier, stops more quickly and is more forgiving on low-in-the-face strikes? Pros and other high swing speed players started switching to higher lofted woods because the extra loft gave them the distance control they needed while still delivering a full swing and stopping on a dime compared to hybrids that kept going too far and not stopping quickly enough.
The smaller head "PRO" hybrid Trottie is using is designed for a downward blow (like an iron). I have them but, being more of a "picker" i find them useless. I CAN sweep the LARGER HEADED HYBRID and FAIRWAY WOODS equally well (I actually LENGTHEN them to accommodate a larger grip without losing swingweight). It really comes down to how YOU contact the ball.
I have 3-5 hybrids but sometimes use 5wood in place of 3H when and 5i in place of 5 hybrids depending on wind or tightness of fairways. Btw, I just found out Freddy couples longest iron is a 6i. From there he has hybrids and wood. For us no pro, I think we should all consider copying his bad.
I've been considering getting a 7 wood and I've hit a few and really like them, my fitter recommended 1/2 inch bigger due to height (6,2) & wrist to floor at 38. I haven't gone through with the purchase just yet as I'm seeing a lot of people mentioning a shorter length is advantageous. Would you recommend me going shorter, if so Trottie, what would you recommend? I'm not seeing a fitter now due to travelling but I'd like to try pick one up.
I liked that 41.50" , you're taller than me so go for what TM offer as standard which I believe is 41.75" (don't quote me). I would not go longer than 42" EOG
How much do I have to pay to do a full all out fitting with Trottie? I’m legit a HUGE Taylormade fan and an even bigger Trottie fan! On my bucket list up at #1 is to get a full fitting with Trottie at The Kingdom! For reference I’m a 3 handicap and have never been fully fit for clubs in my life, I think it could take my game to scratch.
i like the descent angle of a 7 wood. A 4H can run out between 20-40 yds, potentially leading into hazards or bad lies. A 7W sticks the landing where I want it to go.
For sticking greens with a HYB or 7 wood what is your target decent angle and spin? I am swinging about 100 mph club speed, 3,300 spin and 38.5 land angle with my 3 HYB. Should i look into a 7 wood?
I went from someone who played EXTREMELY conservative on par 5 approach. If I couldn’t get there with 5i I laid up. I hated hybrids. Couldn’t stop a driving iron on a green. Now after putting 7 wood in the bag I probably hit as many greens from 230 as I do with a 7iron.
In what case would you want the 30 yards of runout on anything other than a max distance shot off the tee? Seems like a no brainer for me just from that. But I'm also relatively new so maybe there's cases I'm not thinking of.
Links courses. Shots Off the tee you want run out Then flip it to: Hard fairway conditions Firm greens you want the ball to stop Small / Shallow Greens you don't want run out Shots where you need a higher apex Altitude - more height, more yardage So it's course dependent
I just got a 7 wood and hit it for the first time yesterday. Night and day for me over a hybrid....and I like hybrids. I don't know why, but it was amazingly easy to hit. After roughly 30 shots, all....I repeat, all were within a 10-15 yard diameter. Why? I'm not sure. I can't explain it. High and long 215-220 out.
So I’m currently running a 5 wood 17.5°, and a 4 hybrid with 22° loft? Is running a 7 wood at 21° redundant? Would you replace the 4 hybrid for a 7 wood? I’m a novice golfer 1st year playing and a handicap 19.6. I’m trying to find a good 200-225 yard club that I can hit from pretty much anywhere and have less dispersion. Anyone have a recommendation? I run the hybrid though not a ton of confidence, but when I hit it pure it’s awesome, I can also get punchy with it with a 3/4 swing keep it low and kind of bail myself out of trouble with it. Kind of feeling maybe the more loft of a 7 wood would make this a better option for longer par 3’s etc. and perhaps less difficult of a club?
7 wood gonna be a bit easier to hit than the hybrid as a result of the spin and larger head. This all depends how good you are with your 3 wood but you could get one club to do 2 jobs with the 7 wood and then add a wedge. All things to consider as I definitely like learning to chip properly with your 56* before going for the 60*
Curious if you shortened the shaft and if so how much? Also what weight shaft did you end up in? I have the QI10 max 7w cause I prefer the shallower head of the max, but like an idiot I bought it off the rack and I hate the shaft. Not a big deal cause I have shafts I can install, but I’ve been debating on cutting the length down a 1/2”. Seems like a common thing with all my woods. Wether it’s driver, 3w , whatever… I always feel best at - 1/2”
Jack Nicklaus used a 431/4” shaft in his driver. If it was good enough for him it’s good enough for me so I cut mine down to 43”. I didn’t notice any loss of distance. I’m not afraid to cut my shafts down if it results in more consistent contact…which it does. There’s only one way to find out. Go for it.
I currently have a gap In my bag, I hit my driving iron 22.5° 210 rolls to 225 and then straight to 3 wood which is 245 carry to 260ish depending on tee vs deck, I’m wanting a club that carries 220-230 and stops quite quick as it’s the perfect club into both par 5’s at my course, so would you say a 7 wood over a 19° hybrid?
That's the whole reason for the vid. You gotta look at your data and numbers and make that call. Either can work based on player preference and profile. Keep in mind at some point there will be a slight gap dependent on the amount of wedges you carry. 7 wood well worth a look though and test it alongside the hybrid. Dive into this vid too (if you haven't already) th-cam.com/video/yeJopwH_T6w/w-d-xo.htmlsi=b7ac6naKnVBrYfjx Spurs icon would indicate you live in UK so watch that peak height as weather can result in a lower ball flight being more desirable..... that points to rescue BUT hard summer conditions points to 7 wood. As I always say: "your set needs to be viewed as a squad of players, you don't run them all out each week but certain games (courses) require certain players)
@@trottiegolf yeah UK mate, I only have 13 clubs in the bag at the minute so the gap is easily filled, will have to book a gapping session at the range and hit both, but as you know with England, I might as well gear up for worse weather rather than the 2 weeks of summer 😂. Class act as always Trottie, appreciate the reply mate. Love the content brother.
Now compare them out the rough? That’s where the hybrid takes over, loses points in forgiveness and height but gains points in versatility. I don’t really see the 7 wood as a legit 3 iron replacement like a hybrid can be since it’s extremely difficult to hit out the rough.
Love my 7 wood so much. My Dad passed his on to me because he couldn't gel with it. Has become my favourite club, so versatile. It's a 22 degree, but I've lofted it down a little. I also play an 18 degree 3 Hybrid, and like having that in the tool kit for those thicker lies.
Players distance cavity irons works just as good as hybrids for me. Irons give me better dispersion than my hybrids. Hybrids give me slightly better height which is easier to hit
This is similar to what I have experienced. I get a better more consistent dispersion with a game improvement iron, like a Callaway X20 for instance. Distance is about 10 years less than the same lofted hybrid, but more consistent and a better dispersion with the irons. I am gaming a 7 wood and playing with the hybrids to fill he gap. My irons now start at a 6 iron.
@trottiegolf I'd love to see that! I play Srixon irons, but the equivalent of a 770 P-6i, 790 5i, and QI10 in the 4 iron as a utility iron/driving iron. Very interested in your thoughts on that.
PDHY was too big on the looks and didn't fly as high as the rescue I had. PUDI I liked but too close to my 3 iron so I opted for the P770 3i over that. Both PUDI and PDHY are good clubs but we're into personal preferences at the point where I opted out.
I don't think I could get rid of my hybrid. It's my most dependable club and most versatile. I use it when I need a stinger in the trees to keep the ball down and below the trees. I can't do that with a 7 wood.
So many Tour players still carry 3-iron or even 2-iron so I would not call those obsolete. There are players, that probably never will choose a hybrid.
I haven’t played enough in the last few years to justify new clubs but if I was getting g back to more frequent play this is probably the set up I’d be gaming.
Just me but a hybrid is better from the rough. That being said just get a high launching 5 wood like my Taylormade Sim2. You can open it up or choke down on it if you want and it stops on a green like an iron. Now you have a 5 wood and a 3 hybrid (have a 4h also). Problem solved 😎
Thumbs down to TaylorMade shaft offerings. Can’t get a 90g shaft in any “wood”… which anyone north of 110SS is likely going to require in a 7wd. TM appears to be bottlenecking stronger players to ultra premium shaft up charges, from 3rd party distributors.
Why would you not just use a 3 iron? You can get plenty of height on it if you have above 90 mph swingspeed with your driver and the consistency of a 3 iron is unmatched. Anything above a 5 woods or hybrids are not made for players who have above 90mph swingspeed
Pretty sure it’s like 25% of PGA players have a 7 wood now. Theegala plays a 9 wood. Not sure why you think the 90 mph is the deciding factor. Players know how to hit different shots.
@@callumwells agreed I think all options should be considered for every player I just disagree with the premise that above average swing speed should always = iron. So many more factors go into consideration.
That's nowhere near enough speed. 100mph with a 3 iron and then it's a possibility. The greens on tour are so fast, you need land angle. Plus, the fairway wood is so much more forgiving.
Yeah agree… 7 wood you can hit out of a divot or tight lie… so versatile with many options

@@trottiegolf ah man I missed it. Next opportunity I’m going to try to stay in the loop. Your the man Trottie, love your content 🤜🤛🔥⛳️

My 7 wood is my best club purchase in a very long time. My left miss with hybrids is not present with the 7 wood. 👍
i like the descent angle of a 7 wood.
Literally reading my mind Trottie
The 4hybrid and 7wood have arrived today. I’m taking both to the range and course over winter to establish which one I’ll use in the summer.
I love my 21* UW
In what case would you want the 30 yards of runout on anything other than a max distance shot off the tee? Seems like a no brainer for me just from that. But I'm also relatively new so maybe there's cases I'm not thinking of.
Links courses.
Shots Off the tee you want run out
Then flip it to:
Hard fairway conditions
Firm greens you want the ball to stop
Small / Shallow Greens you don't want run out
Shots where you need a higher apex
Altitude - more height, more yardage
So it's course dependent
Since I play an all hybrid set. I prefer the consistency of using a 2 hybrid that would be comparable to a 4 wood
I like the idea of a seven wood, with the right shaft, but I’ll take my 3 iron over a hybrid anyday!
yeah. Same here. Never going to have a hybrid in my bag.
All things to consider as I definitely like learning to chip properly with your 56* before going for the 60*
TM needs to get on board and just call it a hybrid 😂. They have tried for so many years to make rescue a thing
Wether it’s driver, 3w , whatever… I always feel best at - 1/2”
41.50" EOG
80X shaft
D3.5
Jack Nicklaus used a 431/4” shaft in his driver. If it was good enough for him it’s good enough for me so I cut mine down to 43”. I didn’t notice any loss of distance. I’m not afraid to cut my shafts down if it results in more consistent contact…which it does. There’s only one way to find out. Go for it.
The Qi10 7 Wood is money!
What's the KBS shaft Trottie ?
Im currently 16.5 3 wood and 7 wood
as someone who is 5’7”, I game this same 7 wood. So I should go get it cut down a quarter to half an inch?
Dive into this vid too (if you haven't already)

Spurs icon would indicate you live in UK so watch that peak height as weather can result in a lower ball flight being more desirable..... that points to rescue BUT hard summer conditions points to 7 wood.
As I always say:
"your set needs to be viewed as a squad of players, you don't run them all out each week but certain games (courses) require certain players)
@@trottiegolf yeah UK mate, I only have 13 clubs in the bag at the minute so the gap is easily filled,
will have to book a gapping session at the range and hit both, but as you know with England, I might as well gear up for worse weather rather than the 2 weeks of summer 😂.
Class act as always Trottie, appreciate the reply mate. Love the content brother.
Did you tip trim 7 wood? If you did then can you please tell me how many inches you trimmed
2" but that's all PLYR and shaft dependent and also SW to an extent
What shaft is that on the 7 wood 😮
P r O t o - KBS - Really like it, more to come
Switched to 4H and 5W….ditched 4I and 19 degree 3H…
Now compare them out the rough? That’s where the hybrid takes over, loses points in forgiveness and height but gains points in versatility. I don’t really see the 7 wood as a legit 3 iron replacement like a hybrid can be since it’s extremely difficult to hit out the rough.
Good points well made. Love it
Love my 7 wood so much. My Dad passed his on to me because he couldn't gel with it. Has become my favourite club, so versatile. It's a 22 degree, but I've lofted it down a little. I also play an 18 degree 3 Hybrid, and like having that in the tool kit for those thicker lies.
I was pleasantly surprised watching Fred Couples’ WITB! His longest iron is a 7 like mine! Maybe there’s a chance for me! Nah!
I'm much more comfortable with a hybrid profile. I lost the 4iron and now have a 3H and a 2H.
Players distance cavity irons works just as good as hybrids for me. Irons give me better dispersion than my hybrids. Hybrids give me slightly better height which is easier to hit
I like this play.....maybe a vid in here.
The absolute worst thing you can do is try and be a hero in a bad spot. The hybrid seems to be an attempt to make a hero tool.
@trottiegolf I'd love to see that! I play Srixon irons, but the equivalent of a 770 P-6i, 790 5i, and QI10 in the 4 iron as a utility iron/driving iron. Very interested in your thoughts on that.
What turned you off from the PDHY?
PDHY was too big on the looks and didn't fly as high as the rescue I had. PUDI I liked but too close to my 3 iron so I opted for the P770 3i over that. Both PUDI and PDHY are good clubs but we're into personal preferences at the point where I opted out.
I don't think I could get rid of my hybrid. It's my most dependable club and most versatile. I use it when I need a stinger in the trees to keep the ball down and below the trees. I can't do that with a 7 wood.
Found 3hybrid and 5 wood go the distance for mewith 80mph swing speed got 4 and 5 hybirds was thinking of 7 wood be in between 4 5 hybrids play off 14
And I'm torn between my 19* 3h and my 19* "4i".
So many Tour players still carry 3-iron or even 2-iron so I would not call those obsolete. There are players, that probably never will choose a hybrid.
Course dependent, tournament condition dependent.... BUT Yes
I carry both! D, 4W, 7W, 4H, 5-G, 54, 58
7wood fairway 4 hybrid out of the deep rough
Young stud: driver, 3 wood, 2 iron
Aging stud: driver, 3 wood, 3 hybrid, 4 iron
Add 5 years: driver, 3 wood, 3 hybrid, 4 hybrid, 5 iron
Add 5 years: driver, 4 wood (lofted down 5 wood, 3+4 hybrid, 5 iron
Add 5 years: driver, 4 wood, 7 wood, 4 hybrid, 5 iron
Add 5 years: driver, 5 wood, 7 wood, 4+ 5 hybrid, 6 iron
Etc...as speed drops one needs more loft and more woods and hybrids.
3 hybrid tour edition! It hauls ass
I love this channel, but please stop with the overusing of sound effects like the camera shutter. You cant hear anything what you say anymore.
maybe slight exaggeration but I'll speak to Q and say no fancy sound effects jdackers ain't into it
3 iron still works..
it has its place for sure with the right player
Why not a 7 wood and a 24 or 25 degree rescue? Then the longest iron is a 5
That’s my exact set up. 7 wood lofted down to 20
Yea you can go there with that. I was more comparing apples for apples but yea that works as a preference
The 7 wood face is not a blade
"The 3 irons doesnt get air anymore."
My 3 iron will argue with you all day.
How many people actually play a 3 iron these days?
Would it not be to do with trajectory in different conditions? And for some, a 7 wood may be easier than a 3 iron for centeredness of strike
