Wow, at only 42 years old and having 18 years as engineer on those steam engines is pretty amazing. The fact that he learned the position from his father is even more amazing. I guess my previous question about how hard it would be to find a qualified engineer to operate and maintain those old engines has been answered. Definitively.

If Paul Clarke was the person driving the tender I can imagine his exodus from Loon is just the beginning of his problems. Doubt he will ever be skipper again on any yacht if he was the one responsible for the accident. Be one thing if they hit a partially submerged container that fell off a ship. That would be an accident. I am almost sure who ever was driving the tender had alcohol in their system impairing their judgment, after all they hit a well charted island. I am just glad nobody was killed but for a beautiful young lady to have had her face destroyed to me that's just as bad because this is seriously going to impact her life in our superficial society.

PLEASE keep us posted on Delphine. Such a fascinating story and how great that someone has the foresight to restore it.
As for another way to say the cost to build….it cost $2M in 1921 money. In today’s money that would be $35 in 1921 but to build that same vessel today is $90M. The difference, all things being equal, $90M - $35M = $55M due to materials, labor, etc.

You're quite right. We can't estimate the cost of building Delphin today simply in terms of inflation. Wages in the early 20's were a fraction of what they are today. In addition, anyone who's undertaken to refurbish a classic yacht will have discovered just how difficult it is to find the people with the right skills, and those people are well aware of just how valuable those skills are and will charge accordingly. If you can find them at all, you won't find them waiting around at the local Job-Center !

The new captain has been the 1st officer for a while on Loon and was working the whole time towards getting his Captain certification. He DID get it and he captained Loon from the Mediterranean to Florida, which I believe was his first big solo voyage. He did an awesome job too… that was a good video, easily the best of all the Atlantic crossing videos. So Tyler had been listed as Captain Tyler before this accident… is he now THE Captain instead of a relief Captain? Does he want to be the Captain on Loon? He and Paul had a good relationship and it was Paul that helped him get to Captain… I’d bet there is some loyalty there.
Crazy that this happened… SO unnecessary and just a DUMB move for such an experienced Captain! Wow. 🤷🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

As for Delphine I hope you keep following that beautiful ship also after the auction. It would be magnificent to see that ship brought back to glory, she deserves it. Only hope the new owner is not going to take the steam boilers out and convert her to modern engines, although there will come a time when she won't be allowed to enter ports anymore due to emission restrictions. Let's just hope that day is still decades away.

It’s amazing how people will ride the successful coattails of a narcissist right up until they screw up, then they throw him/her under the proverbial bus. But if he was intoxicated while driving that chase boat, he’s earned all the scorn that has come his way.

Given the resignations of some of the crew, the one person refusing sobriety/drug testing and the former captain removing all social media links to M/Y Loon I believe he was fired and his yacht management company also removed from working with Loon. I'm amazed he could refuse any 'tox' screening given his role in being responsible for so many lives at sea. Will be interesting to see if any legal action is taken against him, I cannot imagine the guests / primary chartering Loon durning that time would just let go without any accountability.

About M/Y Loon, we don't know what happened exactly only that people were seriously injured. Since the yacht has a very big 'social media footprint' and following people are naturally curious asking questions. It's important to not put blame on any certain individual, it is not up to us to judge and the consequences of doing so in a situation like this can have very serious consequences, life ending consequences. This is the worst side of social media. For all we know it was an accident and a tragedy, and it should be left there without speculation. I have seen people kill themselves over situations like this, please be respectful.

Loon was up for sale, this will probably affect the price. It will always be known as “the yacht formally known as Loon”, the new owners won’t find that attractive. And Nina needs a yacht that will allow her to use its galley for her own website, I’d say the current owner is fed up with the publicity now and social media, it’s advantageous only when the going is good.

_"Our Lady"_ sounds like an absolute bargain the more we learn... not only could you own a unique piece of maritime _and_ engineering history, but the ex-crew know & love her too. Two generations of steam engineers?! That's invaluable experience for such a unique boat.
Lord knows I'd rather sink $100-150mil into a unique piece of floating history than hand it to someone like Perini for another bland super yacht... but I'd also buy a classic Jaguar or Ferrari over a modern Lambo so each to their own! 🤷‍♀️

Luxury yatching charters have a much higher standard than cruise ships. For one, theŕes not enough crew accommodations for a typical eight hour shift. Thus requiring the crew to take on twelve hour shifts. Regardless if they have duties to perform or not. With the work load and their personal maintenance that doesnt leave a lot of time to be on social media platforms and still get the necessary sleep in.
Eventually something has got to give. From captain to the newest deck hand any job not done properly can be hazardous. A poorly tied knot, items not secured etc. All can be dangerous. One reason they must be on their A game during their shift. It's not surprising to see the level of professionalism diminish when crewmembers are trying to run on four or five hours of sleep and are thinking about editing content and posting replies when their focus should be on the boat its guests and the fellow crewmembers. There's hundreds of watercraft creators on the internet from every aspect of boating. Its usually their boat and they're responsibility. They have the luxury of deciding to sail or do video's etc. But once you take on paying passengers your only focus is on them and the boat. They can post pics and make video's of their vacation as they wish. The better their experience the better the comments will be. After all, its the customers experience that either makes or breaks the boats reputation, not the amount of subscribers and likes. To the subscribers, if you are a patreon or just watch video's, remember that people are paying a fairly good amount of money for the experience. So don't chastise anyone who doesn't agree with these boats promoting themselves as social media platforms. That was never the intent of a luxury yatch. Its the personal attention and the absolute attention to detail of the boat that is.

  • @ricktaylor14001
    @ricktaylor14001 13 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +11

Captain Paul owned the TH-cam channel, not the actual vessel as some people appear to be confused about. Everyone who worked on Loon worked FOR the owner (albeit through a management company that he no doubt also owned). He is the owner of the NHL hockey team Minnesota Wild… he doesn’t appear to be hurting for money and will likely be continuing with his plans to sell Loon and replace her with another one (Loon 3.0 at that point). It’s Paul who appears to not be returning, and he was the “main boss” on board the yacht. Not sure Captain Tyler will take that position, or even if he wants it. Experience wise, running all that crew would be an entirely different job than simply driving the boat so to speak.
Since the accident I’ve been saying “if it’s Paul who was operating the tender, this is likely the end of the TH-cam channel sadly”. I HATE that I was correct in that. Paul did a great job with the channel and it was successful, giving us all a unique look at yacht life from the crew side - a sanitized look of course, but it would be crazy to show drama and “real life” on a yacht you’re aiming to sell charters on, so that sanitized look WAS a smart move. But that success was a double edged sword for Paul… one dumb mistake, one dumb and COMPLETELY avoidable mistake, ends not only the channel, but likely his career. Someone may hire him to captain a private yacht, but no one will want him for a charter ship after that…. I’d say the question of “was he drinking” is all but answered. I say “dumb” mistake because Paul KNEW better, crew were not allowed to have any alcohol even while doing an Atlantic crossing which had NO guests on board. So the idea that alcohol and the ocean being a BAD mix were very well known. Why on earth would you have even ONE drink if you’re the person driving all the crew back to tbe ship on a 2 million dollar tender? Talk about a CRAZY dumb choice!
A couple months ago they did a video during one of the boat shows in Miami. Paul and the videographer rented a BMW i7 (expensive top of the line BMW) to drive out to a party at some famous mansion (the White mansion maybe, White House even? Something like that). He wasn’t wildly partying it up, but he WAS on camera having a least a couple of drinks and yet he STILL got behind the wheel when they left. I always thought that was crazy. He didn’t look really drunk, but you just DON’T risk that in 2024, especially when you’re a captain of a 221 foot yacht AND you have crew in the car with you! What was a tip off… when they let the mansion, they noticed the BMW had a flat tire. They spent a long time looking for a spare to change the tire, the car didn’t have one so they resigned to call a tow truck. The tow truck driver told them the car was equipped with RUN FLAT tires!! Meaning just drive… you don’t need to change the tire; and most 200,000 dollar vehicles have run fiats. If you’re sober, I would think a captain of a huge yacht would have been able to figure that out on his own, no?? I could be all wrong, but that video sounded some alarm bells for many in the comments section, and when the tender accident happened… I immediately thought of Paul and that video. Just two very unnecessary and very stupid choices IMO!
Maybe Nina (chef) will be able to bring a little bit of Loon to life again, but it will only be in the galley… would love to know the full story for sure though!
    🤷🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️
    Cheers, ☮️
