Restoring Cushman 4 Jaw Chuck Part 1

  • We begin the cleanup and restoration of the Cushman 4 jaw chuck that goes with the American Pacemaker lathe. I believe this to be the original chuck that come with the lathe when it was new and should be about 80 years old. There's no damage to the chuck, I simply want to get the things free of rust and corrosion and clean it up nicely. We'll begin by soaking the entire chuck in my Evaporust tank for a whole day then removing it and taking it to the new shop where we'll finish it off. #restoration #evaporust #americanpacemaker #chuck #4jawchuck #cushmanchuck #abom79

    I just wanted you to know that I'm 44 and I had to go on disability unfortunately because I have stage 4 cancer and I'm going to die this year. I became a machinist at 29 and I'm mad it took me that long to find my career. I'm not bragging but I was a damn good machinist and doing my job, I physically cannot do it anymore but my brain is sharp as ever so I just subscribed to your channel and I'm LOVING IT!!!!!!

    Old forklift mechanic here…
    Mitsubishi is a decent forklift. I wouldn’t recommend it for a double shift 16 hour day operation but for what you’re doing it’ll last a lifetime.
    They probably had to jump it to get it on the truck to deliver it to you. The battery is probably bad and won’t hold a charge. They should at the very least give you a battery to replace it. My company would send me out to replace it for free.
    Those tires actually have a lot of life left in them. I wouldn’t bother replacing them.
    Watch that transition coming into the shop from the gravel to the concrete. If you have that mast tilted too far forward you might hit it and take a chunk out of the concrete.
    Change the engine oil once a year whether it needs it or not. Condensation tends to build up in low usage engines and your oil will start getting milky over time.
    A little light weight oil on those mast rails and chains is all you need.
    That load back rest isn’t necessary/required for what you’re doing so feel free to toss that in the scrap bin.
    I didn’t tell you this but a paper clip and electrical tape will take care of that seat switch problem 😊
    Congrats on the new equipment. I really enjoy watching your channel/shop grow.
    If you have any forklift questions my email address is in my (Direct.me) link in my long format video’s description.

    Hey Adam, Rolls Royce keep the heat in their dipping tanks by covering the top surface with ping pong balls. They just move aside when objects are placed or withdrawn but do a good job of keeping in the heat... cheap too.

    Yee Haw! You got a fork lift. I have three. One is permanently outfitted with a carpet spear.
    They are amazing when you want to work alone but need an extra hand.
    A few accessories that I've made for mine to fit the forks...
    Jib boom
    Reese hitch
    Extension forks
    If I didn't have a scissor lift, I'd make a man cage too.

    Can't wait to tell you how to pick up coins in the middle of the floor with your fork lift. Right where it lies using just the lift n the coin laying flat. Used a fork lift when working for storer cable. The manager would bring corporate people back in the warehouse tell them about it and they had to see it. 20 bucks we would split, he would drop a coin n I would pick it up right there then drive over to them lift the forks to let them take it. Was a lot of fun n laughs especially when you are in your early 20's. Now I'm 70. The good old days. Thanks for sharing.

    Enjoying this whole series. The Evaporust folks recommend temperatures above 60 °F. I would think that at 90 °F evapo-rust would evepo-rate rather quickly, but I guess that would just increase the strength since only the water really would evaporate. In any case that chuck looks great. Thanks for the video and greetings from Germany.

    You better train Abby up on that forklift, she'll love it. I'm going out on a wing here but I can virtually guarantee that the battery is fine, maybe you did not shut it down properly or there is a short (more than likely just a silly mistake). Give the battery a good slow charge, check the fluids and see how good she goes (the forklift not Abby). Thank you Sir and thank you for sharing your time with us.

    I'm gonna send you some cheese to go with the wine. Check connections and water in battery if serviceable. Next check altenator output. Should be 13v to 14.5v. If low output check alt. belt for tension. If all good chg. battery and load test. should hold 10 volts for 20 seconds. Disconnect pos. lead check for draw. Anything less than battery voltage is good. Now you can persu a a new battery. Thanks for your time. Pete in South Carolina.

    • @JCWren
      @JCWren 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe as simple as that it hasn't been run much, and the battery is somewhat discharged. Charging it may be sufficient. And if it isn't used regularly, I'd put it on a battery tender.

  • @dlfabrications
    @dlfabrications 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    First charge the battery and then try starting the forklift. If it starts, the battery is not the problem. Maybe you left the key on. With the key off, disconnect one terminal and complete the connection with a test light. If the light is lit up, you have something shorted out slowly draining your battery.

    • @bandittwothree3765
      @bandittwothree3765 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agree. Sulfation of lead acid batteries is continuous without charge. If a battery has sat for a few months, worth it to apply even a few minutes of charge on it, to prevent internal damage from the heavy load of the starter. (a guy who knows way to much about lead acid batteries). Solar or wired float chargers prevent sulfation, as most ppl know.

    • @chemech
      @chemech 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bandittwothree3765 True - but I haven't been able to find a true 60 month battery for about 10 years now. Most vehicle batteries on the market are rated for 36 months, after which they degrade to where you cannot bring them back at some point.
      He may well need to start over with a new battery.

    • @bandittwothree3765
      @bandittwothree3765 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chemech currently produced lead-acid batteries are made with extremely fragile lead plates. And the space at the bottom of the battery designed for unwanted sulfate to slough off, known as the sediment space, is almost non-existent, designed with no room for abuse as disposable. Deep-cycle and electric forklift batteries are a different story and can tolerate limited abuse.

    Congratulations on the forklift! I was lusting after one of those to support my woodturning hobby / addiction, because I'm a bit disabled (a chronic pain problem) and those logs get heavy. (Plus I want to get into machining, and metal weighs even more.) Instead, I decided to get a small tractor: a baby Kubota B2601, a couple sizes down from your L series. It won't be as maneuverable in the shop I'm building, but since I have a bit of land I wanted the loader bucket and a tiller. So far, I'm loving the tractor. I hope you're having fun with yours too! I'd love to have both, but I just don't have the space to park them. Anyway, congrats. It's great to see your shop growing!

    For the infrequently used equipment I own (anything that gets run less than once/week), I add a Battery Tender trickle charger. There are plenty of cheaper clones out there but they don't work as well as the real thing. Florida is a lot easier on batteries than Minnesota but you might want to do the same anyway - it's better than the frustration of having to jump start something when you're trying to get a job done.

    It is great to see a dream coming together. Happy for you Adam. I wouldn't worry about the tires, unless you plan to operate other than on cement and asphalt. Those hard tires are expensive and not designed for soft or uneven terrain, pneumatic tires work better for those conditions. It is unbelievable what forklifts are going for these days. I paid $3500 back in 2000 for our shop for a nice unit. Don't remember a single problem. Thanks for sharing.

    As the proud owner of 3 used forklifts, 2 of which have battery issues, and all 3 have hydraulic leaks.. its just part of the gig! lol. But congrats on that, you will find yourself using it more than you thought you would

    Good idea tipping out that 3-4 gallons of evaporust liquid that was in those speed holes. Amazing what that stuff can do.
    How many barrels is in that tub? o0 after wire wheel / britepad, some water displacement & oil is so important. Else it'll just rust again.
    that "used" forklift looks like just went through some mild testing. Good job keeping up on the search.
    No surprise when an OEM battery from 2012 isn't so good in 2023. Does no good to be annoyed. Gotta change the oil too btw, ;-)
    This is gonna be a major benefit to the shop, and like anything, needs maintenance. Looks like a very good starting point so far.

    I keep waiting for "Robin Leach" (Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous) to pop out of the bushes. "Adam and Abby fresh from filming their latest Travel and Lifestyle video on their other incredibly successful channel." If this were George Clooney, no one would bat an eye at this excess of unused equipment, but to tell everyone how much you struggled to buy a used forklift standing in front of new, unused equipment you don't know how to use .....well..."Is a puzzlement"!* Giggle, giggle!

    I think the black stuff that is left as residue after evaporust is black iron oxide that the rust was converted to.

      @Doco KD7OCO No, hematite is the normal red stuff

    • @joeylawn36111
      @joeylawn36111 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hematite is Fe2O3, same as rust. And it's not black. Black Iron Oxide is Fe3O4. When iron/steel is coated with 'black oxide' - like in impact sockets, that's Fe3O4. This black oxide forms a protective layer that doesn't "rust" anymore, as it's fully oxidized. I'm assuming Evaporust forms black iron oxide from rust, but in a way where it comes off the bulk iron/steel.

    Adam, if the battery is a maintenance free type, there's not much you can do, however, if it has individual caps, that means you have to keep an eye on the electrolyte in each cell. If any are low, you need to use distilled water to maintain the level. If they run low, it will not be at its peak ampacity.

    That "Mitsubishi" forklift is literally the EXACT model CAT forklift I had at work. Cage, mast, panels, controls, literally identical. I put 10,000 hours on that thing and it loved every second of it. You'll love driving it! Protip, take that mast guard off, makes everything better and easier to use. And be careful in the gravel, if one of those wheels starts to spin you're screwed, you'll have to pull it out with the truck lol, no posi-trac on forklifts.

    I watched this video a few days ago, I noticed that Adam must be sponsered by CRC:) It got me thinking about Evapo-Rust though...My Grandpa passed away a few months ago and left me his precision tools. He was a Journeyman Machine Repairman for General Motors. 42 Years at Flint Engine South. His tools had some rust, so I picked up a quart of Evapo-Rust from Menards, just took them out, Evaporust did a tremendous job. I'll be using it again. My Grandpa's Lufkin, Starrett, and Craftsman tools will live on for another half a centrury:)
