Lighter doesn't mean unsafe. Many electric vehicles are so heavy that safety rails can't stop them. F1cars are light weight and fast with a similar hard tub construction around the driver. I am looking forward to the testing. I don't have any significant concerns.

There are two components to safety. Those inside the vehicle and those outside. Most if not all new pickup trucks and SUVs have significant blind spots to their front end, which have caused the death of an increasing number of pedestrians and bicyclists. Aptera's low nose will not recreate those situations where the driver simply doesn't see people on the street.

Light weight for a batterie car. You are correct time will tell. The most important factor in safety is the nut behind the wheel.

The frontal impact simulation showed significant distortion of the occupant structure. No energy absorbing "shotgun" rails collapsing, just structural rails bending. SORB test (all collision energy on one side) would be a disaster.

@@landrover325 The Aptera is listed as 1,800 to 2,200 lbs depending on configuration. I, for example, drive a Honda fit. It is listed as 2,249 to 2,381 lb. So the Aptera is a little lighter, but not too much. So it is in the weight class of a compact car.
But it is really going to come down to weight distribution with the Aptera. I suspect a lot of its weight sits on the front axle because that is where the engine is. Hopefully, that will give it good front-wheel traction.

There are no side airbags included with Aptera. There is a metal beam in the door to counter side impact damage. The Production Intent (PI) will be tested to Federal Government car safety standards by a third party experienced in car safety standards testing even though it is not required for the category of vehicle states will classify an Aptera as.

"Inspired by the cage system of Formula One race cars" is somewhat persuasive, but the word "inspired" prompts questions. How close to Formula One is the design, really? Not having yet passed real-world tests is a valid concern, tho I assume Aptera's engineers would not be so foolish as to under-engineer their very first product to provide a survival space for its passengers. Overall it sounds like this story is simply premature, as we await the results of real-world crash tests.

    • @nomercy4521
      @nomercy4521 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Guess some of it may depend on how much you trust the simulations. If I'm recalling correctly, Aptera claims that the simulation crash testing is very accurate in the industry compared to the real world results. I don't really know much about it, but if a Miata can pass, I don't see why this won't.

No doubt it will be safer than driving/riding a 2-wheel motorcycle. With a rollcage, airbags, abs (antilock braking traction control) and autopilot (to keep tailgating idiots away), hopefully you won't have to wear a helmet also (I do believe helmets are required in California even on 3-wheel " motorcycles, because they are classified by CA DMV as motorcycles. The biggest danger is being tailgated by a pickup truck. I do believe the normal Aptera driver will be an extremely cautious one ("don't you crash into my baby"). So - One Big Question - how much will auto insurance be - more than the average 4 wheeler, less than a 2-wheeler, less than a high performance sports car (think Chevy Corvette 400+ horsepower)? I suggest making the tailight/stoplight blink red at first, then a blazing white "TAILGATING DANGER" after 10 secs on the rear brake light(s). They'll slow down for fear of a police officer giving them a ticket.

Unproven safety? How about un-DISpoven safety?
Have you ever fishtailed in an unloaded pickup on wet/snowy roads?
Or, how about high center of gravity SUVs that like to flip over when swerving at high speed? Inertia goes a long way.
People can sometimes be overconfident driving a gun safe on wheels, thinking they're indestructible because they're in a heavy steel cage riding high above other traffic.
While you can't defend yourself against the unpredictable, many accidents are avoidable when you're aware of your situation. Driver attitude goes a long way and overconfidence negates any practical safety features.
There are many less-than perfect vehicles out there that have their particular weaknesses.
I won't even bring up motorcycles and scooters...

Aptera is circumventing the safety regs by making it a 3-wheeler, which for Federal regulatory purposes makes it a motorcycle. However they seem to have persuaded the various states to define a new class of vehicle called an "autocycle" such that helmet laws and the like do not apply.

"Aptera is circumventing the safety regs by making it a 3-wheeler" This is misleading they made it a 3 wheeler for efficiency.
"However they seem to have persuaded the various states to define a new class of vehicle called an "autocycle" such that helmet laws and the like do not apply."
Another deceptive remark. The "autocycle" laws already exist in many states. Some states require helmets some safety glasses each state is different. Aptera does NOT have the lobbying power to change the laws in each state as you are suggesting. I don't even think they could do it in one state.
Aptera is just adapting to the laws based on design. It will most likely be as safe as most vehicles on the road and 100% more safe then any other 3 wheel vehicle that I can think of like a Slingshot for example.

@@Fairburne69 Yeah, they make it efficient by ignoring safety regulations, which they can do because by Federal regulation it's a motorcycle. And in CT that "preexisting law" was passed in 2015.

@@johnbrobston1334 Lets be honest we don't know how safe it will be. To say its unsafe is dishonest. To safe its safe is dishonest. All we have are simulations. They will be doing crash testing once they have the PI vehicles ready. I do have my concerns and won't buy one if they don't do well by independent crash testing results.
Sounds to me like you hate Aptera which is fine. Do you go on ever motorcycle page and talk about how unsafe they are? I'm willing to bet it will be safer then any car made 40 years ago when shoulder safety belts and airbags didn't exist.
But until they get tested maybe you should stop making claims you can't support with evidence. Claims made without evidence can be dismissed without evidence.

The carbon fiber parts are not structural anymore, they are just glued to the structural aluminium frame. There is no solid shell anymore. The aluminium frame has to survive a crash. Aptera is not agile, it is clumsy and wider than a Hummer H1. It is a deathtrap in case of an accident. Aptera did not pass any of the safety regulations necessary for a car. It is a motorcycle and does not have to.
There was never any crashtest with an Aptera. The airbag is the only satey feature necessary in a 3 wheeled motorcycle so you do not need to wear a helmet.

@@vic321344 There is video footage of the Aptera passing the "Moose Test". It did better then most modern cars on the road today. Especially SUV's and even a BMW.
You are adding nothing constructive to the conversation.
MOOSE TEST: The evasive manoeuvre test (Swedish: Undanmanöverprov; colloquial: moose test or elk test; Swedish: Älgtest, German: Elchtest) is performed to determine how well a certain vehicle evades a suddenly appearing obstacle. This test has been standardized in ISO 3888-2.
Imagine a moose stepping out in front of you. You swerve to avoid it and then notice a vehicle quickly approaching so you have to immediately swerve back. Many modern cars don't do well with this test. The Aptera did extremely well. Why? The two biggest reasons are its light weight and low center of gravity.
