I watched Polii/Rahayu's gold medal match live and I couldn't control my tears watching her burst into a pool of emotion. Her career really was a true rollercoaster ride with the lowest of lows and the highest of highs.
Every moments here is absolutely spot on. Lee Chong Wei is arguably one of the greatest of all time in men's singles discipline, he was just unlucky to be played in Taufik's era (earlier in 2000) and Lin Dan's era. When Lin Dan was extremely declined, there were Chen Long and Axelsen who ruthlessly dominated badminton world since 2014. Always love what LCW done for this sport as he shown us great character during his time. His hardwork, his desire to win the major titles, his quality on and off the court is remain an inspirational moment forever. Can't handle the tears when he decided to retire from this sport.
As an Indonesian, I was in tears also when Polii and Rahayu won the Olympic gold medal. They weren't the favourites back then. In the final, they faced the most difficult opponent to the name of Chen/Jia. The world champions. Can't believe until this day it was actually happened. They beat the likes of Lee/Shin, Du/Li, Fukushima/Hirota respectively whereas they were unseeded pair in Tokyo. Cried a lot when both Greys and Apri awarded the gold medal by the committee with that famous victory ceremony song. The most emotional and iconic moment in badminton Olympics.
Axelsen never dominated before 2017... before that he was just one of the top players
The last tearful moment could be heartbroken for LCW as well, after fell short 3 times in a row in Olympics finals

At 6:18, Wang Shixian (Chen Long's wife) was herself a top 3 player in China but unfortunately didn't get qualified for God knows whatsoever the reason was.
It is truly one of the most emotional moments in Badminton.
Each country can only select two players for Olympic badminton games. If you rank 3rd in a country, you likely lose the chance to compete in the olympics.
IIRC, she was part of the trio magnificent Wang-s when China was so dominant in WS, the other two being Wang Yi Han and Wang Xin. On both occasions in 2012 and 2016, she's on the third spot for China WS, hence couldn't compete in Olympic.

@@Indrakusuma_a cmiiw but from what I rmb, WSX was higher in rank back in 2012 but WYH was selected instead. Of course, that selection proved to be wise but still.. Well to be fair, both times CBA's decision kinda makes sense (in 2016 LXR was indeed the top player, and WYH was the defending champion) but it still sucks to see someone that talented & pretty much was on top of her game never played in the Olympics.
@@castlekate2 correction: in 2012, Li Xue Rui was the one who had lower rank than WSX (but just about two months before olympic, LXR's rank surpassed WSX's), while Wang Yi Han was the top seed. and in 2016, the defending champion at that time was LXR, not WYH.
Wang Shixian didnot get the chance to play in Olympic, but her lover ChenLong dedicate the gold medal to her. So touching!

Back in 2014, when China, Indonesia, Denmark, South Korea, and Japan hold the title for "Most successful national teams" in BWF World Championship. When Spain coming to participated in badminton, those 5 Countries did not know soon Spain will be a dark horse in Badminton world. All of this happened because of *Carolina Marin* , she came from the land that known for the best soccer players, she is the first woman who collect 3 gold medals from Women's Single. I personally hope she can collect one or more gold medals from BWF World Championship, and best luck always with her.

Dont forget polii almost retired early in the 2014-2016 (i forgot the exact year) bcs she think she is not good enough and her partner nitya retired early. Then came the young energetic apriyani and together they climb the world rank and finally they won olympic gold medal
Polii is now retired, she also left Apriyani Rahayu with her new partner & she left her smiling legacy. Polii is clear evidence that life is like a rollercoaster, sometimes we are above and sometimes we are also below, but Polii does that with a smile on the field.
I would have given the end of one athlete's career the most applauses and put it in the last scene in the order, despite winning is so important in competitive sports.

That time the format was different. They did that not because of money or what but want to avoid to play against their countrymen or play against stronger opponent in next round. This will increase the chances to gain Olympic medal. More like strategy to me but you know, its ruined the beautiful game.esp in the highest level, Olympic. Not just her but many top China player also doing the same.
After the incident, BWF change the format in next Olympic where there will be drawn again in play-off round
