    Your ex made some points! Most self help books could be reduced to half of their length cause they get very repetitive. They usually have two or three points they want to get across and then just write and write and wriiiite chapters around them. Still, there's some life lessons in there!

    • @Sunny99926
      @Sunny99926 4 ปีที่แล้ว +79

      That's why i really like the idea of the genre itself but not the execution, it just feels too preachy.
      Also it feels like they're telling me something that i already know so why bother? (im an overthinker oops) still very fascinating tho!

  • @TheAimanana
    @TheAimanana 4 ปีที่แล้ว +820

    okay, so I agree that most of self-help books can be reduced to some bullet points, BUT the point of those books IS to be repetitive and to tell you the same thing over and over and OVER again, so that it'll finally kick into you. If you just read a small article with a few points of what you should do to help yourself, you're most likely gonna forget about those in a few hours/days, but reading the same concept during a long period of time is gonna make that idea stick into your head
    Sorry if this sounded aggressive - I've got love/hate relationship with self-help books too, but they really got me through some dark times in my life, when I was 14, 19 and 23 - don't underestimate those.

    • @carlie9584
      @carlie9584 4 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      i completely agree! different people understand different ways of saying something so hearing a concept explained 3-5 different ways you have a better chance of it "clicking" eventually.. i guess some people just get it the first try and thats why they deem the book too repetitive.

    • @Nikatronixx
      @Nikatronixx 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@carlie9584 this is very true! I'll read a version of a self-help book and practice what I read for a few months, then something bad happens that causes me to revert back to my old ways of reacting and my brain "forgets" the progress I made. And so I gravitate towards another self-help book. We NEED a bunch of self-help books saying the same thing- it's the only way we will [eventually] learn.

    • @rainforestchurch2936
      @rainforestchurch2936 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      That's so right. It's not like we don't intellectually understand and resonate with what's said in those self help books, but emotionally we just can't TAKE IT IN and EMBRACE. That's why we just repeating them and saying it to ourselves over and over again

    • @siggejohansson5650
      @siggejohansson5650 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      between lesbians around here is quite often, tbh. You can even see exes going out on double date with other exes (I think I made it a bit confusing). From my own experience, all the women I dated I have them as friends, some not so close anymore, but for life reasons. My longest relationship lasted around 6/7 years and we're kinda close friends for 11 -we broke up almost 4/5 years ago.

    I really like Seneca's Letters from a Stoic because it's insanely good advise that can really hit you from a great philosopher who lived like two thousand years ago and it is very easy to read compared to other philosophers (some of his advise is not fully applicable to the present but most of it is)

    10:55 to anyone interested in existentialism i’d highly suggest you read the book “at the existentialist café” by sarah bakewell. it’s more of a biography/philosophy overview than a self-help book however it helped me understand some of the key concepts that philosophers who first introduced this school of thought discussed in their works and that alone served as sort of an epiphany and completely changed my way of understanding life. also, one type of therapy in psychology was based on existentialism and there’s a great book by one of the leading existential therapist - irvin d. yalom, called “when nietzsche wept” which, even tho it’s a fictional novel, also presents main ideas of existentialism in a super interesting way so i highly recommend that one as well!! okay that’s all, have a nice day ❤️

    Damon's ex's got a point tho. Like in cognitive science we say cognitive affordance is almost always something to celebrate because some non semantic knowledge like these life advice are not meant to be learnt the easy way. Maybe you feel like you get something out of that book, but most of the time it's only because you already have that lesson in your subconsciousness. Or think about learning how to swim by reading a book instead of getting into the water, but only even more difficult.

    TLDR: existentialism is crippling for some of us.
    i agree with X on that existential book like I have OCD and anxiety so when these questions enter my head they usually end up with me having a mental breakdown coz my brain can't let shit go. If I can't find the answer then the question is going to keep going in my head and that has happened too many times in quarantine coz life is very uncertain at the moment. ( i have video about all the questions i feel occupied by on my channel, i think its called im 17 or something i dont remember) i dont know where im going with this but i think its kinda weird to romanticize existentialism. those french dudes were not having fun when they became existentialists.

    Dude, maybe your positive vibe will rub off on your ex. Negative people get more sick.lol Seriously tho, some of these self help books are legit. And positive reenforcement can over time be manifested. If you think it, and you believe, it will be. It took me forever. I used to be like your ex about these books. There is science behind a lot of this. Even going to church and praying helps. Doesn't mean the bible is true but the power in praying to the universe or yourself has some energy to it.

    Unfortunately, if all it took was bullet points to get meaning across to people, poetry would be bullet points, music would be bullet points. The truth is sometimes a well-written metaphor or anecdote can make someone feel a "bullet point" idea more than just like "- eat - pray - love."
