      Their engine is already a turbo engine. This is likely just a function of them not adjusting the ignition timing to suit.
      Secondly why they didn't start with a 50 shot is beyond me...

      @@HumbleMechanic Respect for the balls to do it, but why you didn't call someone and talk to them or do some internet research first baffles me...If you're aware of the limits of the stock rods being ~400 lb ft of torque, than why not have gone with the progressive nitrous kit from the start? What about the timing/plugs? I'm sure that there's got to be at least a handful of people out there on the VW Vortex that have done similar shenanigans with similar results? I love the S4 and glad that you guys were able to pick it up and stay under budget, but it would've been much cooler to have seen the GTI vs the Civic.

    • @whorutothink
      @whorutothink 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm sure there were quite a few lessons learned, but did you guys actually take an hour or two to go scour the VW Vortex for some threads where others had made similar mistakes or installed the nitrous and used it successfully? I haven't looked myself, because I can't afford to take such a risk on my daily driven MK6 GTI, but if I were going to take such a risk I would definitely have done my due diligence and done my research ahead of time. It was entertaining, but sorely disappointing at the same time. It would have been way more entertaining had you guys successfully installed a progressive nitrous kit and been able to use the right spark plugs (probably 2 degrees colder than the original factory plugs like the guy above stated) and with or without timing having been pulled (maybe gotten a custom tune from someone reputable like Stratified).

      I threw a rod driving a car once. It just needed some fresh oil but it was super high mileage and a not so awesome engine to start with and was a manual transmission which was a requirement for me way back then. I was on a road trip back from Austin, Texas and we were about 8 miles from home when, *BAM*, car shuddered horribly, power dropped and nothing worked. I pulled over to the side of the road and oil was on the low side, but didn't seem terribly bad when looking at the dipstick. Wouldn't turn over, so we used insurance to trailer the car back to my house. When they started to wind the car to the trailer we saw all this oil pouring out from the back end of the block. It was crazy. I remember when it exploded all this black smoke started pouring into the cabin and I looked out the rear review mirror and saw what looked like shrapnel scatter all over the road.

      They have a budget of $5k...I doubt that Civic is going to be pulling 10 second quarter miles. People act like every Honda is a 10 second car. I'd be shocked if it even got into the 12s for under $5K. They probably would have had a very good chance if they had run the nitrous in a way that it had been progressively shot instead of dumping the entire shot with the button. It was obvious to anyone with any inkling of knowledge that those factory rods weren't going to hold up to 400+ lb ft. I've got a MK6 GTI and the motor is similar to the one they blew up in that MK5. The rods are a known weak point and the off-the-shelf kits sold intentionally keep the torque down to prevent the rods from breaking.

    Now you got me curious as to what power levels you could've gotten on a 50 shot ramped up, then to a 100 shot ramped up. Not that the engine or even the DSG would hold those torque levels, but maybe it would've held for a few passes.

    • @usahd7745
      @usahd7745 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The dq250 dsg is very robust and if we’ll maintained and with the proper dsg tune would’ve held up just fine. However the engine and more specifically, bottom end does not like tq down low. 100shot was way too much of a shot to be sprayed down low and was too much of a shock. Like I said rods are a weak point in this motor so anything more than 350-400wtq and your praying to hold it together, that’s hard to do with small turbos that like to make tq down low. I personally have the same car and am deciding on what turbo to get bc I don’t want to build my motor. Cheers, sorry for long response.

    250-ish whp with a K04 shows that something is obviously with your power delivery. You could have spend that money better on a cheap intercooler, intake, and boost delivery piping, then you would probably would have gotten closer to the numbers you expected. Some ATL locals were playing with nitrous on 1.8T cars in the early 2000's. You know, to help spool a miniscule K03 turbo faster LMAO.
    One of them was trying to do a dyno run with a 200 shot (I don't know if it was a 200hp kit, or if they drilled out a jet), which resulted in one of the cylinder walls splitting from the pressure and filling that hole with coolant. A piston hydrolocked and broke the rod, causing the stub on the crank end to saw a big hole in the front of the block.
