    Presonally I love it! Already made 2 songs with it. Sure, it’s not as fully expanded as the desktop version, but it’s perfect for creating a quick beat or song idea on the couch and continuing on PC. Actually, I might prefer the Notes app instead of the Session view, especially because the cloud and Link syncing

      @matttinklermusic  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      100%! I have actually really been loving using it to create quick beats. It's very different to my normal workflow, but I love it as a sketchpad. I do wish there was sequencing, because for me I think that would make the workflow much cleaner instead of having to play everything in. That and audio tracks is probably my two biggest points for improvement.

    I figured out after this video that You CAN delete automation (you've gotta tap on the little dot). Whoopsies! Don't get me wrong, I actually think this is a great app, I just wanna see it be even more awesome! :D
    I have a huge amount of respect for Ableton and I think they make really amazing things. I guess for something like this I just would have expected it to be a bit more fully-featured upon release. But of course, there is plenty of time for Ableton to add more features and improvements!

    The ability to create a basic Audio Track is the first thing I’d like to see added. Singing vocal tracks into a Simpler or Drum Rack is a rough hack.
    This is obviously beat focused but equally would like to be able to capture an acoustic guitar and vocal idea.

    • @matttinklermusic
      @matttinklermusic  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I 100% agree with this. It feels like they've missed a whole subset of music-makers by not including audio tracks.

    • @robertjamesonmusic
      @robertjamesonmusic ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. Everything is great but there needs to be an easier way to record vocal samples. Having to mess with it and adjust a vocal take with midi is a workaround that is time consuming enough to hamper work flow

    • @lannyfuller8367
      @lannyfuller8367 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      While I totally agree, as someone who's made his living programming for iOS, I'm going to play Devil's Advocate.
      The only reason apps like this and Geoshred can even work on iOS is special low-level drivers, lacking in Android, that allow for real-time audio generation. And while you can mix the two types of tracks, it is non-trivial to do so.
      So I imagine this will be feature in upcoming releases. I bet there were some heated bts discussions over whether to include it in the initial release.

    I love it, and I'm happy for it to just be a note pad BUT, it absolutely should allow you to change the length of midi notes and maybe a few sequencer functions to make editing the midi you have played in a little more functional. Plus the ability to record an audio track. Then it would be perfect 👌

    • @matttinklermusic
      @matttinklermusic  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      100% agreed! I think it's fine just being a note pad for ideas, that's what it's designed for, but those features don't take it away from being a note pad and arguable actually make it a better note pad!

    Great overview bro! I’ve been enjoying note a lot lately. Subbed!

  • @nateh9917
    @nateh9917 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I've been messing around with note for a bit, and I think I can answer a couple of your quesstions:
    As for why you can't swipe to get more octaves, right now you can slide in between notes. I assume they wanted people to be able to use that expression instead of being able to change octaves easier, and I find that it's not that cumbersome to change octaves.
    Also, you can record lyrics/vocals into it, you just have to use the sampler. I assume they didn't have the audio track in there because it reduces clutter, and you're essentially using audio tracks as a sampler anyway in note.

    • @matttinklermusic
      @matttinklermusic  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Nate!
      With the octaves thing, it's not that hard to change octaves, you're right, but I've used other mobile music apps where there is a little bar on the side or top that allows you to scroll between octaves, I guess this is more of what I meant. Having that would remove those extra clicks so from a UX perspective would be more efficient.
      With the vocals, you're totally right! But as quite a few people in the comments have mentioned it's a pretty cumbersome workaround to have to record in a sample, then input the sample as a midi note. To me it would make much more sense to be able to have a track dedicated to creating audio clips, which would really remove that extra barrier. It's just all about making things easier and more accessible to people with different workflows, and right now I think Note caters much too heavily towards a very specific workflow. :)

    I agree man. I have been playing around with the released version for about a day and a half none stop. Been sketching out a dub techno track. I actually love it. I was able to seamlessly move between my iPhone and iPad (liking the bigger screen real-estate) on the same idea using apple devices like iPods I already had in my ear. The cloud going to live is just fantastic.
    I do agree there are a couple shortcoming. like example: I can't have it play a clip a certain amount of time before moving to the next scene (horizontal clip selection). but even being able to play out your clips like in live into a session mode would be really strong too. another thing I was kind of worried about is being able to trigger scenes externally. if im playing E-drums or triggers on analog drums. how could I sketch the ideas and move to the next scene?
    I recommend opening feature requests and let them know this stuff. but overall I really like it a lot.

    • @matttinklermusic
      @matttinklermusic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Awesome, glad you're enjoying it! There actually is a "feature request" option in the app. If you tap on the three dots on the homepage I think there's a Feedback option, which allows you to send an email to the devs. :)

    Great review. Glad I found your channel - I just subscribed. Not ready to get the app quite yet as I am still coming to terms with Ableton Live and music production with my computer. I find myself agreeing with many of your points about the app, but since I have not tried any others I lack your frame of reference, so sketching ideas with Ableton Note is still very appealing to me. Question: I recreated your beat in Live just as an exercise. Though I own Live Suite I could not find the drum kit or either of the presets in my library. Does Note come with new kits and sounds? And are these exported via Ableton Cloud with your project/tracks? Thanks!

    • @matttinklermusic
      @matttinklermusic  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for watching and for the sub! Greatly appreciate. :)
      Good question! I actually don't know if the presets are pulled from the Live library or if they are created from scratch for Note, I would reckon it's actually a combination of both. Regardless, once you export the .bdl file from Note and open it up in Live, the instruments will be there, so you could always export the instrument as a preset to use in Live!

    Ableton notes is perfect for arranging your song, but if one is looking for the features typical of a daw such as audio editing and sound design, you could use an app like Cubasis 3 for these features and then export your audio to Ableton Note to arrange them.

    • @matttinklermusic
      @matttinklermusic  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Totally! I just think that this caters a bit too much towards a specific type of working. Not everyone can play in beats, and not everyone works on loops. I personally find it much easier to sequence in ideas, and I know that other people would LOVE the ability to be able to add a vocal track, even just to hum a melody. These are all different ways of generating ideas that aren't possible with Note, which I would love to see come in a future update! Other features like velocity randomisation I can live without, just would be nice additions. :)

    Honestly, Flip sampler by Andrew Huang seems like the better version for “music sketching” and he is a Live user so really feels at home as well. It is beyond me why Ableton developers are working on this extremely limited software when iPad and even iPhone’s computing power are just insane nowadays, better than every computer we had 10 years ago.
    Ableton has become synonymous with innovation, creativity and most importantly immediacy. The fact that Beatmaker 3 is the closest iPad version of Live we have right now is..well.. confusing. Why not Ableton?

    • @matttinklermusic
      @matttinklermusic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is a bit strange how limited Note is compared to lots of other music-making apps out there. I think that they tried to lean very hard into the "sketchpad" idea because they of course don't want to step on the toes of their own Live software, but some of the limitations do seem strange when compared to other apps.

I'm just not in the Ableton Note target audience... I don't get the whole idea. If i want to make music on the train, i m gonna use my Laptop which has full scale Ableton with 2TB of Samples, and a huge VST Collection. And if i want to quickly save a melody which came to me, i m of course gonna sing it into my phone -> what a f** joke that you can't even do that quickly in Ableton Note... hahahah. I guess they can't wait for ADDITIONAL feature requests in their forum, which they won't adress in the next 5 years. Jesus Christ.
